This article is about a weapon in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. |
The Z Staff (also commonly spelled "Z-Staff") is a tall silver scepter with the letter Z on the top of it that served as the iconic signature weapon of Lord Zedd and one of the most well-known objects in the Power Rangers universe.
History[]
Lord Zedd's staff has existed for as long as he has, first appearing in the first-part of the three part episode "The Mutiny" which opened Season 2. There, it was first seen as a snake wrapped around Zedd and his throne before changing into his personal weapon. He used it to banish Rita Repulsa, create his special Putties, and later used it to create Pirantishead who was far stronger than any of Rita's past monsters.
Zedd later loaned it to Goldar to use in order to brainwash Tommy Oliver to get the Sword of Power for the Robogoat to de-power the Power Rangers. TV STORY-The Green Dream
In Season 3, after Zedd married Rita, he retired his Growth Bombs as his way of enlarging monsters. Instead, he would combine his staff with Rita's Magic Wand which would amplify their magic to generate a lightning cloud. Said cloud would then fire off blue lightning which would blast the monster with enough energy to make them grow.
During an occasion where Rita and Zedd decided to swap places with Rito Revolto to allow him to become their leader for one day, Rito wielded both Zedd's staff and Rita's wand. He originally intended to use them to turn the Power Rangers into monsters, but due to Rito holding the Z Staff the wrong way, he ended up accidentally turning the Rangers' teacher Mr. Wilton into Marvo the Meanie instead, whom he also enlarged, although they were retrieved by their owners once his plan failed. Though not fragile, Tommy proved in his solo fight against Lord Zedd that it is perfectly possible for a slightly augmented human to break the staff as he managed to hit it with Saba which caused it to temporarily transform back into a snake. TV STORY-Changing of the Zords
The Z Staff later vanished when Zedd and Rita were purified by Zordon's Energy Wave and the United Alliance of Evil was wiped out. TV STORY-Countdown to Destruction
Zedd and Rita’s son Thrax wielded a staff similar to his father’s. TV STORY-Once a Ranger
Ryjack somehow got a hold of the Z Staff as part of his collection despite the fact that it ceased to exist when Zedd was purified. It then ended up in the possession of the Evox Virus Army. TV STORY-Making Bad
Upon being revived by Reaghoul and freed from his Compliance Collar, Zedd vowed to reclaim his staff before burning the Earth, TV STORY-Old Foes which he manages to do so when he raided Grid Battleforce. TV STORY-Love Hate
Powers and Abilities[]
- Lightning Projection: Lord Zedd could fire white lightning from the Z at the top.
- Monster Creation: The staff's primary use. Whilst Rita had to rely on Finster and his Monster-Matic to create her monsters, Zedd could effortlessly create his own monster, using nothing but lightning from his magic staff although he usually needs an object to create the monsters from.
- Monster Materialization: In the episodes "The Power Stealer" and "Where There's Smoke, There's Fire", he was able to create the Octophantom and later Flame Head and his stallion from nothing, showing that Zedd could make monsters out of thin air,
- Harmful Strikes: A single strike from Zedd's lightning was powerful enough to take Tommy down with a single blast during their one-on-one battle.
- Z-Putty Creation: Lord Zedd can create his own brand of Putties, dubbed Z-Putties by fans to differentiate them from Rita's Putties, by blasting an area of the ground using lightning from his staff.
- Monster Growth: Zedd can cross his staff with Rita's wand to fire blue lightning and grow the monster of the day. This was the primary way of growing monsters throughout season 3.
- Curses: On multiple occasions, Zedd managed to curse objects using his staff, giving them different effects such as cursing two pairs of sunglasses to make the wearer see everyone else as a Putty, in hopes of turning the Rangers against each other in the episode "Putty on the Brain".
- Mind Control: Lord Zedd's staff could fire lightning capable of controlling people's minds. This was only shown in the episode "The Green Dream" when Goldar borrowed it to brainwash Tommy to get the Sword of Power.
