Trumpet Top was an illusion-casting trumpet monster who served as the main antagonist of the episode "Orchestral Maneuvers in the Park."

History

When Zack's cousin Curtis wanted to attend a jazz concert, Zack gave him their Uncle Ed's trumpet with Ed being an apparently famous jazz player. Lord Zedd had his Putties sprinkle it with hallucination dust which Curtis subsequently sprayed the Power Rangers with at the jazz concert. With its initial purpose fulfilled, a Putty snuck in and stole the trumpet during an interval and took it to Angel Grove Park where Zedd used it to create Trumpet Top who initially appeared to be a giant before shrinking back down in a pipe yard. Trumpet Top had the ability to cast illusions by activating the dust Curtis previously sprayed the Rangers with. His mission was to cast illusions so that the Power Rangers would wear themselves out fighting and Zedd could easily finish them off. Trumpet Top noticed that the Rangers were in Angel Grove Park so created an illusion of the Grumble Bee which got them to morph. Once the Grumble Bee delivered a beat-down to them at the beach, Trumpet Top decided to speed up the process of wearing them down by creating illusions of the Saliguana, the Fighting Flea, the Soccadillo, the Rhinoblaster, the Mantis, the Stag Beetle and the Slippery Shark.

Trumpet Top had a riot of a time watching his illusions wipe the floor with the Rangers were soon so worn out that they nearly collapsed. However, Zordon teleported them back to the Command Center and it was revealed that the illusions were only visible to those affected by the powder so was easy to see through. As soon as the Rangers found out, they were sent to destroy Trumpet Top but Zedd tossed one of his Growth Bombs to Earth. Trumpet Top caught it mid-fall and used it after proclaiming his excitement to "hit the big-time", the explosion making him grow as he cackled maniacally so the Rangers summoned the Thunderzords to form the Thunder Megazord. Trumpet Top immediately charged at the Megazord and flipped over the Thunder Saber before breathing fire at the Rangers. The Megazord was disarmed and threw the Thunder Saber which he leapt into the air to get before laying a beat-down on the formation with its own weapon. However, the Thunder Megazord lit up it's eyes which caused the hilt to electrify and fry Trumpet Top at which point he was forced to discard the Thunder Saber. The Thunder Megazord then caught the Thunder Saber in mid-air and finished Trumpet Top off with three energy slashes. Trumpet Top writhed before flailing and falling to his knees and then his face before exploding. Upon his destruction, Trumpet Top reverted back into Uncle Ed's trumpet.

Personality

Trumpet Top was a very cunning, deceptive and manipulative monster who caused the Power Rangers many problems with his illusions, although his illusions weren't enough to trick Zordon and his plan was discovered. However despite him at first relying on tricks and deception, he was also a formidable fighter and fought the Thunder Megazord to a stalemate. Above all else, he was highly faithful and loyal to Lord Zedd.

Powers and Abilities

  • Strength: Two slashes from Trumpet Top with the Thunder Saber stunned the Thunder Megazord.
  • Durability: Trumpet Top survived getting fried by the Thunder Saber.
  • Agility: Trumpet Top was able to effortlessly flip over a swing from the Thunder Saber.
  • Illusion Creation: Trumpet Top's main ability where he could fire a blast of white from his left arm capable of causing hallucinations.
  • Fire Breathing: Trumpet Top could blast orange fire from the opening where his mouth would be. This was strong enough to make the Thunder Megazord throw away its Thunder Saber.
  • Size Changing: Trumpet Top was created as a giant because of an editing error but was then human sized when the viewers next see him.

Arsenal

  • Fists: Trumpet Top had no weapons of his own by default but seemed capable with his bare hands though he never used them.
  • Thunder Saber: Trumpet Top stole the Thunder Saber and used it against the Thunder Megazord. He showed no special powers whilst using it and it might as well have be an ordinary katana.

Weaknesses

  • Perception: Trumpet Top's illusions were only apparent to his victim's and others could easily see through the deception.

Behind The Scenes

Portrayal

  • Trumpet Top was voiced by Dave Mallow who also voiced Baboo with who he also shared many of his vocal inflections.

Notes

  • Trumpet Top was the first monster to summon past destroyed monsters in Power Rangers history. The second was Doomstone (who resurrected several past monsters from their graves in the Haunted Forest) and the third was the Terror Blossom who resurrected the Hatchasaurus (although he was actually alive).
  • Trumpet Top's counterpart was based on tofu (though why he has what appears to be two trumpets embedded in his head is anyone's guess) and was a heavy drinker of sake.
    • This was changed due to blatant alcohol similarities but is also why he is always seen moving slowly and sluggishly, why he is seen holding an unexplained flask immediately before he creates Grumble Bee, and why there are multiple close-ups of his singular permanently bloodshot eye for no reason.
      • The last part was due to poor editing and, more often than not, needing shots to use during a speech that Trumpet Top makes and having a very small number of actual shots of Tofu Hermit (who was almost exclusively seen in human form except for his last scene and Zord fight).
