Trini Kwan (August 9, 1977 - 2022) was the first Yellow Ranger of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Retroactively, she was also referred to as the Mighty Morphin Yellow Ranger or Yellow Mighty Morphin Ranger, though these are in reference to the show, as opposed to proper labels.
History[]
This article contains content in reference to the main TV series, as well as supplemental material, such as the comics. A sliding/floating timeline applies. Story instances for TV and other media will be clearly marked. |
Early Life[]
Trini Kwan is a 16-year-old daughter of a Taiwanese doctor and a Korean woman, who has lived at eight military bases for the past fifteen years due to her father's work. TV STORY-Go Go Power Rangers Issue 15 TV STORY-Go Go Power Rangers Issue 18 She also has Chinese and Japanese traditions, and is a resident of Angel Grove and a student at Angel Grove High School. She was chosen by Zordon and his robot assistant Alpha 5 to be the Yellow Ranger.
Becoming a Ranger[]
Trini Kwan was working out at Ernie's Juice Bar & Gym along with her friends. Suddenly the ground began to shake and Trini and her friends were transported to the Command Center. There awaited quite the sight, a blue head floating inside an energy tube and a young, fully-sentient and multi-functional automaton with a head in the shape of a flying saucer. And even more incredibly, this being called Zordon, had selected them to become Power Rangers. Kimberly and Zack blew Zordon off, but Trini, Billy and Jason lingered.
The idea of protecting people from the evil witch Rita Repulsa appealed to the gentle and kind nature of Trini. With the others calling them, Trini, Billy, and Jason left the Command Center. Outside the building they were confronted by another strange sight - Putties. Trini fought with all her might, but the Putties were too strong. Without hesitation, Trini activated her Power Coin and became the first Yellow Mighty Morphin Power Ranger. Needless to say, after morphing into a Ranger, Trini made quick work of the Putties. She also took up the challenge that Zordon placed before her.
When they are not saving the world, teenagers with attitudes chosen by Zordon gather at the Angel Grove Youth Center. Trini updates Alpha 5 with the language of the year 1993. Far away, Dr. Carver and Dr. Kenyon discover a new civilization and the largest statue ever built in ancient America. Unintentionally, Dr. Carver activates the terrible cross between monster and robot that attacks the excavation site. Back at the Youth Center, Billy creates a device with internet access when everyone sees the attack on TV. In the territory of the attack, summoning the Dinozords, the Power Rangers fight against a terrible monster. Struck by the lightning of the stone giant, the Rangers lose communication with Zordon and have their pieces exchanged makes it difficult in battle. With the help of Alpha 5, the exchange effect was reversed and the Rangers, winning the battle and returning the giant to its location. COMIC STORY- Rita Repulsa's Attitude Adjustment

A young woman with a calm and composed attitude, no one would ever guess that Trini was fearful of anything. But Trini did have one fear - a fear of heights. But when she saw Billy in trouble, with a tremendous effort, she put aside her fear to help him. Being a Ranger during this era meant one had to be thrown into some strange places. One of these was the Island of Illusion where, once again, Trini had to face her fear of heights. With the other Ranger's help, she was able to accomplish this. Trini was also placed under a spell where for a time she lost her confidence. Thankfully, she was able to remember previous battles and overcame this spell. Trini fought many battles against Rita and defeated her time and time again.
One of Trini's pet causes was the environment. She was always involved in drives to clean up the environment. Not only did Trini clean-up parks, but she also planted seeds for future trees as well. Trini was also involved in the Big Sister program which she did for her little cousin. Trini loves animals as well, trying to help strays find a home. Trini enjoyed life and made time to have fun. She had a wonderful doll collection, which Rita actually used one as a monster. Trini liked to host food festivals; she enjoyed picnics, carnival, concerts, masquerade balls, talent contests, dances and the beach. Trini was a big help behind the scenes of any school theatrical production.
Trini was very close to her family. Especially her Cousin Sylvia and Uncle Howard, the latter she invited up to help Billy with his confidence. When Rita whisked away her parents, she was forced to chose between her Power Coin or her parents. With tears in her eyes, Trini gave up her Coin to Goldar. Of course, Rita had no intention of returning her parents. Trini and the others quickly put together a plan to get their parents and Power Coins back by recruiting former teammate Tommy Oliver to reclaim his powers (as Jason had kept his Dragon Coin). The plan worked and Trini was happily reunited with her parents and returning teammate.
Trini was also very close to her fellow Rangers, particularly Kimberly, connected through being the only female team members, and Billy, connected through their scientific intelligence and kind, passive natures. She also helped translate for Billy when his speech got too technical for the others in his group or to help him study for an upcoming test.
Trini was always by Billy's side when he was working on various devices to defeat either Rita Repulsa or Lord Zedd. Trini enjoyed Zack's high spirits and was always found supporting Jason in his various matches.
She is a bright, supportive and athletic young woman who is able to assist Billy with Zord maintenance due to her advanced intellect. She initially wanted to pursue a similar career to her father, who was a doctor in Taiwan, but since participating in the World Peace Summit she has found a new trajectory in life.
When Tommy came on the scene, Trini was quick to make him a friend as well. She was very supportive of him during the two different times he lost his Green Ranger powers. When Trini found out that there was to be a new Ranger, she didn't want Tommy to be replaced. As luck would have it, the new Ranger was Tommy as the White Ranger. Trini made friends easily and had no problem spending a day with her neighbor's little girl Haley.
Trini found herself falling for a new guy by the name of Richie. Although she was always casting loving looks towards him and inviting him to various functions with her, Richie seemed not to notice. He eventually became smitten with Trini, but a relationship was never shown.
Trini enjoyed various athletic venues. Not only did she work on her martial arts, but enjoyed volleyball, scuba diving, mountain motorbiking and basketball as well. During a sporting event at school, Trini helped her team win the Noble Lion Trophy. Trini was always up for the challenge of learning new skills. She took on the task of learning the style of the Mantis Kung Fu with her complete concentration.
The Rangers are driving out to the desert in Billy's RadBug so they can send Rita back into space without any civilians seeing. During the drive, Zack reveals that he has gotten a gift for his girlfriend Angela: a pair of walkie-talkies designed after characters from an old children's show she likes. Trini explains to Kimberly that people often like to collect things that remind them of their childhood, though Kimberly can't quite understand it. As the Rangers get out of the Radbug for a breather, Zack puts the walkie-talkies in the car's trunk next to Rita's Dumpster. Up in the Moon Palace, Lord Zedd is still in disbelief that his Scarlet Sentinel has fallen. Seeing the Rangers in the desert, he gets an idea and uses his power on the Radbug. Suddenly, the car comes to life and begins attempting to ram into the Rangers while claiming that it will no longer stand for being treated like a slave. The Rangers morph and use their Power Weapons to create a ramp that flips the Radbug on its roof and immobilizes it. Zedd throws a grenade down and the Radbug grows in size, plus gains a face made from Zack's walkie-talkies (which also gives Rita a means to complain about all the hassle she's getting put through). Tommy summons the White Tigerzord to deal with the RadBug while the other Rangers form the Thunder Megazord, and he tries to stop it by climbing into the runaway vehicle and driving it with his Tigerzord at the wheel. This only serves to anger the Radbug as it turns into a bipedal monster and ejects its Zord-driving driver. The Thunder Megazord rides the White Tigerzord to catch up to the Radbug as it nears Angel Grove's city limits. Once it gets close, the Megazord jumps onto the Radbug's hood and tears its fuel line out to end the joyride. With the Radbug back to normal, Billy tends to repairs while the other Rangers prepare to send Rita on her trip. Zack also recovers his walkie-talkies, which are perfectly intact, and Kimberly admits that she'll never doubt the value of collectibles again. COMIC STORY- By Bug... Betrayed
When Tommy fell unconscious after his battle with Scorpina, she made a request to Zordon that she perform a power scan on him, noting that his heart rate was heightened. The two bonded during the analysis, with her recognizing Tommy's guilt over his actions under Rita's spell. During the scan, Tommy began to hallucinate and, along with the scan itself, gave Trini clear evidence that Rita's control had done more damage to Tommy than he'd been letting on. COMIC STORY- [[|]]
During the battle against Lord Drakkon's Black Dragon, Trini and the other Rangers have their powers severed after Billy's Power Coin is taken. She is re-powered as a Green Ranger thanks to Tommy's Power Coin and reclaims control of her Zord. She is abducted during the battle with Finster's Goldar Army and uses the situation to reclaim Billy's coin. With Billy's Zord regained under their control, they form the Megazord, stop Goldar and travel to Lord Drakkon's dimension to aid the rebels against Rita's forces and save their lost friends. Trini, along with Jason and Zack, was selected to attend. Trini would eventually have a daughter named Minh, who was kept in the dark about her life as a Ranger. Following Billy's attempts to resurrect Zordon, he instead accidentally collected the evil essence of Rita that was purged by the Z-Wave. The evil Rita particles coalesced into Alpha 8, creating a robotic version of herself. Trini and her team were later called upon by Billy, who was fighting Robo Rita and her army of Putties alone. When Rita tried to kill Billy with a spell, Trini took the blast to protect her friend, killing her. She left no trace, as the fatal spell disintegrated her body.[2] Trini's passing left her teammates distraught, particularly Kimberly, who knelt and wept immediately after her murder, and Billy and Zack later argued on whether or not they should reveal their identities as Power Rangers and the truth behind Trini's death to Minh. Trini's Morpher was eventually found and kept in her house, which Minh later took to avenge her mother.

Personality[]
Trini is a kind, thoughtful and compassionate girl. She is also the second most mathematical and scientific of the original Rangers, next to Billy Cranston. She alone was able to understand Billy's technical jargon early on, and loved to assist Billy in the creation of many of his devices, including the signal blocker that released the Dinozords from Lord Zedd's control. Trini also cared greatly about the environment and would lead campaigns to save important pieces of history, such as the Forest Spirit statue. She does not have many fears, but suffers from chronic acrophobia (fear of heights). Trini is in her core a peacemaker who will fight only if provoked, and is also very studious, with a strong passion for mathematics and sciences.

Portrayal[]
- Trini was portrayed by the late Thuy Trang. In deleted flashback scenes for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, a younger Trini was portrayed by Charlie Kersh, who portrayed Trini's daughter Minh Kwan in said special during present-day scenes.[3]
- In Super Sentai footage from Zyuranger, her suit actor was Hirofumi Ishigaki (石垣広文 Ishigaki Hirofumi). In U.S. footage, her suit actor is Bridget Riley.
- Lead writer Tony Oliver, who was present for the shows auditions elaborated on her casting. “After we had lost Audri Dubois, we decided to take a different approach to the character. We cast Thuy because she was very beautiful, graceful and was actually a very good dramatic actress. You could also see the chemistry improve with the original five Rangers because while Audri was a fine actress too, she just didn’t fit as well as Thuy did.”

Notes[]
- Controversy over Thuy Trang being cast as the Yellow Ranger and Walter Jones being cast as the Black Ranger led to accusations of racism against Saban. According to Tony Oliver at Power Morphicon 2007, the producers were unaware of this being racially insensitive until the 10th episode. This officially makes Trini the first Asian Yellow Ranger.
- Trini is the only Mighty Morphin Power Ranger who has not appeared out of suit in an anniversary special of Power Rangers.
- Thuy Trang died in a car accident on September 3, 2001; the Time Force episode, Circuit Unsure, features an obituary for Trang.
- Trini is the first female Ranger to have a male Super Sentai counterpart.
- Trini was the first Ranger to destroy a monster single-handedly without the help of other Rangers or a Zord.
- According to a contest held by ABC Family in 2004, three years after her actress' death, Trini was voted the best Yellow Ranger of all time[4].
- "The Yellow Ranger," a Melbourne-based Hardcore band, is named after Trini Kwan's time as the Yellow Ranger.
- Due to her on and off appearances during the second season of MMPR, the producers re-dubbed Trini's voice with an unknown actress referred to only as Judy.
- Trini is the longest lasting Yellow Ranger, with a total of 88 episodes.
- Officially, she is the only one on the original Morphin Power Rangers team who has not had a romantic relationship on screen. In the TV series, her character would develop a relationship with Richie, but they were never shown getting very deep into it.
- Trini is a playable character in Power Rangers Legacy Wars.
- Trini's name in the first draft of MMPR, known as "Galaxy Rangers", was Trini Crystal.
- Trini's birthday was given as August 9, making her a Leo.
- Trini's birthplace was given as Houston, Texas.
- When asked who her favorite superhero was, Trini chose Wonder Woman, since she was a female superhero she could identify with.
- When asked what her favorite foods were, Trini says she was a foodie in general, but she loves vanilla ice cream and chili dogs.
- In Once & Always, it is heavily implied that Trini is not married since she should have had someone else's surname because "Kwan" is on her mailbox and Billy mentioning that it has also just been Minh and Trini and that she does not "have anyone else".
- Trini is the fifth Power Ranger to die, and is the only Ranger in the entire franchise to be killed permanently as all other Rangers who were killed were revived in the end of their series.
- Overall, she becomes the eighth Ranger to die.
- Due to Once & Always being aimed at adults, she is one of the few characters to be outright mentioned as "killed" instead of simply being "destroyed."
