The Secret of the Locket is the twenty-sixth episode of Power Rangers in Space. It is the beginning of the five-part story arc that reveals the truth about Astronema.
Synopsis[]
During a battle between the Power Rangers and the monster Batarax, Astronema's locket is torn off. Andros finds it and discovers a picture of himself and his sister as children, meaning that Astronema is his long-lost sister Karone.
Plot[]
A morphed Andros is confronting Darkonda over the kidnapping of his sister (Karone) years ago. Darkonda describes the deed as one of his finest accomplishments while Ecliptor watches the fight in secret. Putting Andros on the defense, Darkonda reveals the only regret he has about the kidnapping: not destroying Andros when he had the chance. Darkonda throws the Spiral Saber at Andros who deflects it with a kick and retaliates with his separated Astro Blaster. Andros gains the upper-hand and puts Darkonda on his knees, demanding to know Karone’s whereabouts. As Darkonda refuses, Ecliptor steps out from behind a tree and accidentally steps on a twig, immediately shuffling back behind a tree before they see him. This gets the attention of the two enemies and Darkonda uses this to run and hide, frustrating the Red Ranger.
Darkonda tauntingly laughs at Andros’ inability to find him. The Red Ranger, now frustrated, swears he will find Darkonda again and he teleports away. Coming out of his hiding spot, Darkonda complains that Andros is becoming a pain and swears to destroy him. Then, Darkonda gets an idea and plants small devices onto trees, planning to use Andros’ vengeance against him with a trap. After a successful test, Darkonda cackles that Andros’ search for Karone will be his downfall. As Darkonda leaves, Ecliptor gets an idea of his own.
On the Astro Megaship, Andros has a nightmare of Karone’s kidnapping. He wakes up in a cold sweat and moves to regard a picture of his sister. Meanwhile on the Dark Fortress, Astronema looks at her locket as Ecliptor comes into her quarters to inform her that Batarax’s attack awaits her command but notices that Astronema seems troubled. Upon her request, Ecliptor reminds her that she was brought to his doorstep as a little girl and has raised her like his own daughter ever since. He also claims that her parents and brother were destroyed by the Power Rangers. Astronema implies her belief in his story by saying that he’s the only one she’s ever trusted, but she has a feeling her brother is still alive. Ecliptor tells Astronema not to let her feelings distract her. Astronema agrees with Ecliptor and gives the order to attack Earth.
D.E.C.A. alerts the Rangers of Batarax’s attack on Angel Grove. They morph and proceed to Earth to help civilians out of the battlefield before confronting Batarax. Astronema and Ecliptor arrive on scene with a squad of Quantrons. As they watch the fight from afar, Astronema is suddenly conflicted when she sees a mother trying to protect her children from the Quantrons. Andros sees the same family and moves to rescue them. As a Quantron charges at them with its Q-Blade, Andros bravely prepares to act as a human-shield in order to protect the family, but the henchman is blasted by Astronema, momentarily bringing the fight to a halt. Andros questions her actions and the fight resumes. Astronema, conflicted over her actions, leaves.
The Rangers continue to fight the Quantrons and Batarax as Darkonda appears. He lures Andros away from the battlefield and back to the woods to enact his trap on the Red Ranger. The two enemies resume their fight and are once again evenly matched. Darkonda proposes that if Andros beats him, he will reveal Karone’s location, but Andros refuses to make a deal with the likes of Darkonda. The fight resumes yet again and Andros manages to unknowingly kick Darkonda right where the trap has been laid. Darkonda jeers at Andros telling him that Karone does not even know he exists. This provokes the Red Ranger into blindly charging towards Darkonda but before Andros can get close enough, Ecliptor appears and attacks Andros. Surprised, Darkonda accidentally sets off his trap in a confused panic and is destroyed once again.
Andros threatens Ecliptor for causing Darkonda’s destruction, but Ecliptor explains that he just saved Andros from meeting Darkonda’s fate. Andros voices his confusion, to which Ecliptor declares that he won’t save him again. Ecliptor ignores Andros’ asking why he saved him in the first place and teleports away, leaving as Andros is distraught at losing Darkonda, since he was the only one who knew where Karone was.
Andros returns to the city to save his friends, only to get shot in the back by Astronema. She taunts him by entertaing the idea of taking out a Ranger herself and he attacks her. As they fight, Andros unintentionally knocks her locket off with a strike from his Spiral Saber. She moves to retrieve it when the other Rangers corner her, Astronema orders the Dark Fortress to fire the Satellasers at Batarax, giving her the chance to retreat. Andros tries to look for the locket that went flying during the fight, but he decides to refocus his efforts on the fight with Batarax.
The Rangers summon the Astro Megazord and make preparation in anticipation of the monster’s attacks but Batarax emits a sonic blast at a different frequency, causing massive damage. The Astro Megazord now on its knees, Cassie sees that the jamming lock worked, and Batarax’s sonic attack is neutralized. Before Batarax can change frequencies, Andros ties him up with the Laser Whip and attacks with their Blaster. With their systems back online, the Rangers finish off Batarax with the Astro Megazord Saber.
After the fight ends, Andros returns to the wreckage of the battlefield to look for the locket again. He manages to find it and is about to open it when Astronema appears and demands he give it back to her. Andros opens it anyway and is aghast to discover that there are two pictures of him and Karone as children. As Astronema takes the locket back, Andros begins to wonder if Astronema could actually be Karone. He then produces an identical locket on his neck and opens it to reveal the same two photos. Andros posits that she might be his sister – a notion which she refuses, recounting details from Ecliptor’s story earlier. She convinces herself that Andros is trying to trick her and teleports back to the Dark Fortress.
Meanwhile, Darkonda informs Dark Specter that Andros has discovered the truth about Karone and voice concern over Astronema’s response to this revelation. Dark Specter is confident that his power over Astronema is strong enough that she will not stray. Darkonda deviously accuses Ecliptor’s care towards Astronema might have tarnished her evil spirit. Dark Specter tells Darkonda that he better be wrong about that claim.
On the Dark Fortress, Astronema refuses to believe that Andros is her brother and Ecliptor claims it is all a trick. Astronema leaves, planning to make Andros pay for trying to convince her that they are siblings.
Aboard the Astro Megaship, Andros tells the others that his sister has been under his nose the whole time in the form of Astronema. T.J. tells Andros that he needs to convince her first, but Ashley points out that even if Astronema believed Andros, there might not be any good left in her. Andros does not accept that and believes there to still be good in her; he just needs to find a way to reach her.

Notes[]
- Several hints in this episode foreshadow that Astronema is really Andros' long lost sister, Karone:
- A transition of scenes in one of the first moments goes from a young picture of Karone to Astronema looking at her locket, indicating that the villainess may be, in fact, the long lost sister of Andros.
- Ecliptor told Astronema that the Rangers "destroyed her parents and her brother", but she then said that she is sensing that her brother is "alive", which could be Andros himself.
- When the Rangers are fighting Quantrons, Andros protects a mother and her two children, named Andrew and Karen. The names of the children are very close to Andros and Karone (the siblings that this episode is about), in which they suddenly struck Astronema in the mind, possibly making her remind her own true past with Andros.
- This is even more evident when she blasts down one of the Quantrons with her Wrath Staff, saving the family those children belong to.
- During Darkonda and Andros' second fight in this episode, the villain said that the Red Ranger's sister doesn't even know that the latter existed, which signifies that Karone was maliciously brainwashed (even before it was literally done to her) after she was captured by the former.
- Just as Andros was about to fall into Darkonda's trap, Ecliptor then deliberately saved the Red Ranger (with Darkonda's own trap being backfired after he fell into it). This may show that since Ecliptor himself has deeply cared for Astronema (even if she was raised as an evil being), he knew that Andros is her brother.
- In the scene where Cassie explains that the sonic neutralizer blocked Batarax's sonic blasts, an image of a tank like vehicle can be seen on her screen, indicating the successful blocking of his attack.
- In Megaranger, the only way to defeat Bat Nezire was a special sonic cancelling device mounted on a van deployed by the company the Megarangers worked for. They presumably cut it out due to the people operating it being Japanese and because it would make no sense in the context of this episode.
- When the Megazord hit him with its laser whip, Batarax's arm was out reaching for something and he had stopped advancing for some reason. The reason for this was because he was reaching for the same van from the previous note.
- The plaza the Rangers were fighting in was used several more times throughout the series, most notably in Power Rangers Time Force, where Wes' visor was busted out. TV STORY-Worlds Apart
