The Mutiny is a three-part episode and the first, second and third episodes of the second season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

This episode featured the first appearances of Lord Zedd, the first US exclusive villain in the franchise, in part I and the Thunderzords in parts II and II.

Synopsis

Rita Repulsa has been removed from power and now her master, Lord Zedd threatens the Earth with powers unlike anything ever seen before. He creates the Pirantishead monster who freezes four of the Dinozords and took control of the Tyrannosaurus and Dragonzord. The Power Rangers must step up their game if they hope to survive against this new enemy.

Plot

Part 1

The Power Rangers have entered themselves in a four-wheeler race to raise money for charity. As always, Bulk and Skull brag that they will defeat the heroes, even though Kimberly reminds them that it's a charity event. Mr. Caplan drops the green flag and the race is on. Up in the Moon Palace, Rita Repulsa is getting ready to launch her newest scheme to destroy the Power Rangers, but a sudden lightning storm sends everybody into a panic. Goldar declares that the storm can only mean one thing: the return of the evil Lord Zedd. The lightning storm is also seen on Earth, causing concern among the Rangers as they continue the race.

Goldar heads to a new area of the Moon Palace to meet with Lord Zedd, a fearsome man of exposed muscle and twisted metal who has already turned the room into his personal Chamber of Command. Goldar quickly swears loyalty to Zedd, who rewards Goldar by returning his wings to his back. Rita then attempts to pledge her own loyalty, but Zedd shows no forgiveness towards her due to her many failures. To prove his superiority, Zedd uses his power to create Z Putty Patrollers, a more ornate and more powerful version of the familiar clay soldiers.

Zordon summons the Power Rangers to the Command Center with distressing news of Lord Zedd's arrival. He fears that the Rangers' current powers will not be enough to defeat Earth's new menace, but he is unable to do anything about this for the time being. Meanwhile, Zedd has run out of patience with Rita's continued grovelling and strips her of her magic wand and her powers, then orders her banished from the Moon Palace. Adding insult to injury, Zedd has his Z-Putties bring out a miniature version of Rita's original space dumpster and shrinks her to the size of a doll. Goldar enjoys one last laugh at his former master's expense as he seals Rita in the dumpster so that Zedd can cast it off into deep space. With Rita out of the picture, Zedd turns his attention to the Power Rangers.

Back on Earth, Bulk and Skull have crashed their four-wheelers and are attempting to steal the Rangers' own when Z-Putties arrive and send them into a panic. The Rangers morph and arrive to save them, but the new breed of Putty prove tougher for them to handle than Rita's version did, more so when Tommy's Green Ranger powers begin to fail mid-battle. While Bulk and Skull cheer from nearby, Jason connects with a punch on the Z-emblem of a Putty, causing it to explode. The other Rangers follow suit and soon the entire pack is crumbled to dust. As the heroes return to the Command Center, however, an awestruck Bulk declares to Skull that they have a new goal: to reveal the Power Rangers' true identities and become famous.

At the Command Center, the Rangers admit that finding the Putties' weak point so quickly was luck and realize that if Zedd's Putties are that tough, then his monsters must be even worse. Zedd proves them right when he transforms a piranha into the monster Pirantishead. Tommy is unable to join the fight due to his weakened powers, and so the other five Rangers head back to action without him. Pirantishead appears in Angel Grove to taunt the Rangers and shows his power by blasting buildings to pieces. The Rangers respond by summoning the Dinozords. Part 1 ends as Pirantishead freezes the Mastodon, Pterodactyl, Triceratops and Sabertooth Tiger Dinozords in place.

Part 2

Although the other Zords are frozen, the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord is still active and the Rangers summon it to take on Pirantishead. The monster takes control of Tyrannosaurus, which then attacks the Rangers instead. After receiving a power boost from Zordon, a recharged Tommy arrives and the others apprise him of the situation. Tommy summons the Dragonzord to protect them from Tyrannosaurus. The two Zords begin fighting, and are evenly matched until Pirantishead takes control of the Dragonzord as well.

In the Command Center, Zordon tells Alpha they were fortunate to anticipate Lord Zedd's return, and instruct him to prepare for 'Phase 2'. Meanwhile, the Rangers are desperately trying to avoid the Tyrannosaurus and Dragonzord's attacks. Tommy attempts to distract the Zords by playing the Dragon Dagger, and the Rangers leap to the top of a nearby building in an effort to reach the Zords' controls. That doesn't work, and the Rangers decide to retreat and consult with Zordon.

Back at the Command Center, Zordon and Alpha tell the Rangers that the Dinozords alone will be no match for Lord Zedd, so he plans to give them new Zords. The Rangers are introduced to the Thunderzords - the Red Dragon Thunderzord, Black Lion Thunderzord, Blue Unicorn Thunderzord, Yellow Griffin Thunderzord, and Pink Firebird Thunderzord. When Kimberly asks about Tommy, Alpha explains that his powers are still too weak and unstable to allow him access to a Thunderzord. Making matters worse, the Rangers must first regain access to the Dinozords before the Thunderzords can be summoned. Billy suggests he may be able to make a device that would block the signal controlling the Zords. Trini and Billy head off to work on the device in his lab, but Pirantishead is spotted at the rally and the other Rangers are forced to fight more Z-Putties in order to keep the racers from getting hurt.

At the rally, Bulk and Skull have stolen two four-wheelers from the Rangers and are trying to figure out the way to the finish line. Pirantishead appears and uses his powers to send the four-wheelers driving backwards. The monster then confronts the Rangers again and summons the Tyrannosaurus and Dragonzord to destroy the Rangers.

Part 3

Billy and Trini arrive with the device to stop Pirantishead's signal and activate it to no effect. With the Zords closing in on them, the Rangers form the Power Blaster and initially aim them at their Zords, but turn and blast Pirantishead at the last second. With the monster distracted, Billy fixes the device (he had put a battery in backwards) and activates it. At once, the attacking Zords are halted and the rest are unfrozen.

Furious, Lord Zedd uses his magic to sink the Dinozords below the Earth's surface, though Tommy sends the Dragonzord back to the ocean in an effort to save it. Zedd then throws a grenade down to Pirantishead, who uses it to grow to giant size. Back at the Command Center, Alpha reports that he was able to recover enough of the old Dinozords to create the Thunderzords. The Power Rangers summon their new Zords into battle, bringing a rare smile to Zordon's face as they come together into the Thunder Megazord.

Pirantishead makes the first attack by catching the Megazord in his chain weapon, but the Rangers recover and break the chain. With a mighty slash of its Thunder Saber, the Thunder Megazord finishes off Pirantishead and gives Lord Zedd his first taste of defeat. While Zedd rages in his throne room and berates all of his minions, Finster merely looks on from his workshop and mutters that his monsters would have won had Zedd used them instead.

Back at the Command Center, Tommy is informed that the Dragonzord's power is now as limited as his own and must be used sparingly, but the Rangers are confident that they will get their friend back to his full power. As for Rita Repulsa, the Viewing Globe reveals that she's still stuck in her dumpster and is singing to herself to pass the time. Everybody enjoys a good laugh at Rita's expense (even Zordon!), but they also see that Bulk and Skull are still stuck on their out-of-control four-wheelers.

The Rangers use Billy's device to get the vehicles back to normal, sending Bulk and Skull onto the ground in a heap. As Kimberly and Tommy help them recover, the bullies boast that they're going to expose the Power Rangers for who they really are. The Rangers simply laugh at the notion, but agree to give Bulk and Skull a lift to the finish line, where the group brings up the rear of the pack.

Notes

  • This three-parter had the production title of "The Return of Lord Zedd." This was likely changed to try and hide the reveal of a new main antagonist.
  • First appearance of Carla Perez as Rita who would later become her permanent actress starting with "The Wedding-part I" because they could not get Machioko Soga to film in America. Perez can be seen very temporarily when Zedd shrinks Rita down to be re-sealed.
  • The credits for parts I and II only feature stock footage of the Dinozords without any B-roll from previous episodes of Season 1 to show this was thier final appearances. In contrast, part III features just Thunderzord stock footage as thier debut.
    • This means that these are the only episodes in the franchise to not feature B-roll from the actual episodes in the end credits.
  • Parts 1 & 2 mark the last appearance of the original intro and the last time Jason David Frank is credited as "Jason Frank". Future credits would credit his full name.
  • Alpha 5 comically refers to Billy's signal blocker device as food, running on the common joke in television media of robots using metal and occasionally oils as nourishment the same way that food and drink are to humans.
  • Lord Zedd is an American creation, as are the new Putties.
  • This was the first story to mix Zyu2 footage with Dairanger which is why Pirantishead is never seen in the same shot with Thunder Megazord.
  • Finster won't make another appearance until "Two for One" and wouldn't create another monster until "Ninja Quest-part IV".
    • This episode also marks the first time he appears in American footage when he ducked Zedd's lightning with the others on the balcony.
  • Bulk and Skull embark on a season-long subplot of trying to learn the identities of the Power Rangers starting with part I.
  • Zack mentions Pudgy Pig from last season's "Food Fight" and "A Pig Surprise" in part I when they worried about the next threat Zedd would send their ways.
  • Jason coins the expression "back to action!" in Part 1.
  • This marks the first time the Rangers go directly to using Zords against a monster without trying to fight it hand-to-hand, and only the second time Zords were intended to be used against a human-sized enemy. The first was against the Green Ranger in "Green With Evil-part II."
  • The ending credits for parts 1 & 2 are just the credits rolling over images of the Dinozords. Starting with part 3, they would show the Thunderzords for the rest of the season.
  • The new opening credits for season two debut in the third part. It includes stock footage from Season 1, but also new individual shots of the main cast, along with the Thunderzords and Lord Zedd.
  • Even though the Rangers have new Zords, they still have the same costumes, weapons and morphing phrases from the previous season. Saban chose not to have the Rangers change into the costumes from the Japanese counterpart series, Gosei Sentai Dairanger because they were worried that changing the suits would negatively affect merchandising. Only the Zords, monsters and the White Ranger are lifted from Dairanger.
    • This infamously led to all non-Zyu2 fights in the season being a shot-reverse-shot battle prior to the Zord fights.
  • The cockpit for the Thunder Megazord was created in America.
  • Zordon laughs for the first time in Part 3.
  • In the original Gosei Sentai Dairanger, there is no Black Ranger. Instead, there's a Green Ranger, which is why the Lion Thunderzord has a green face and why green lightning appears in front of it during the Thunder Megazord transformation sequence.
  • Part 1 features the first time morphed Rangers don't wear their helmets.
  • Shortly before Tommy morphs back into action to fight Pirantishead in Part 2, his helmet appears on his head with green energy, the only time this method would be used.
  • The book "Lord Zedd Strikes Back" was based on "The Mutiny".
  • Final appearance of Ami Kawai as Scorpina. Sabrina Lu would take over the role in American footage for Scorpina's next and final overall appearance in "Goldar's Vice-Versa."
  • Part I was the first episode since "Return of an Old Friend Part 2" to show Tommy suffering from the effects of his weakening powers.
  • Part I was the final episode to use the Zyuranger stock footage of the looming thunderstorm.
  • The Dinozord to Thunderzord transformation uses the American versions of the Bandai toys, with the screen inaccurate "M" on the Mastodon a dead giveaway.
  • FOX originally aired these episodes in prime time in the summer of 1994, a rare move for a children's television show, likely an attempt to capitalize on the peak of the show's popularity. However, the network's promotion for this event was spotty, especially for Part 1, and was promoting Saturday morning encore presentations of "The Mutiny" at the same time.
  • Part 1 scored a 7.2 rating in prime time, earning it 49th place for the week. Parts 2 (4.7 rating) and 3 (4.9 rating) fared significantly worse.
  • Two notable pieces of Zyu2 footage were cut:
    • In part I, Pirantishead would have taken control of all the Dinozords  with the Mastodon, Triceratops, Sabertooth Tiger and Pterodactyl firing on Dragonzord when it initially arrived.
      • This was cut due to there not being a follow-up in the Zyu2 footage (meaning they'd just stop being used aside from the Tyrannosaurs and Dragonzord for no good reason)
    • In the original mecha battle, Pirantishead retook control of Dragonzord and the two double-teamed Megazord, until Pirantishead was blasted (possibly by Titanus) and Dragonzord was released.
      • This was cut to switch to the Dairanger derived Thunder Megazord instead of Zyuranger's Megazord.

Errors

Part I

  • In both the preview and the episode itself, Alpha says that “Lord Zedd’s power is unmatched by any we’ve ever seen before.” However, this is inaccurate since both Master Vile and Dark Specter were later retconned to be more powerful than him and Zordon had past experience with both.
  • Mallow's narration in the preview said that Zedd creates a palace, when in reality, it was the same building with the Zedd's throne room being prepared.
  • The Fifth Annual Children’s Hospital Charity Motor Marathon was seemingly short in terms of race course but all three parts (which must encompass the entire race for the ending to work) should have taken several hours at least if not several days.
  • How would anyone actually watch the Motor Marathon? They were all based at the start of the racecourse. and there never appear to be any cameras along the race course.
  • When we first see Rita, the doorway behind her is clearly empty but the follow-up shot has Goldar and Scorpina standing there.
  • Trini asks what could be an emergency as if they didn't spend the last season fighting monsters.
  • The Rangers teleport to the Command Center facing backwards (meaning they should appear facing the Viewing Globe) but appear facing Zordon.
  • Goldar asks Zedd if they should send down the Putties to attack the Rangers because "they were out in the open" despite the fact that they were already
  • When Rita reacts to the dumpster and says "not again", she is back on her main balcony and space can be seen behind her despite the fact that she is kneeling on the ground so it shouldn't be visible.
  • Rita visibly switches races as well as hair color when Rita shrinks to be sealed away due to a switch of actress from Machioko Soga (a Japanese lady) to Carla Perez (born in the Philippines).
  • When Goldar puts Rita inside the dumpster, she is very clearly a doll or action figure of Rita.
  • During the Putty fight, Zack is thrown down by the foot but holds his arm when Billy and Tommy help him up.
  • When the Putties throw the weakened Tommy in part I, he can be seen getting thrown twice between two different shots because they shot two takes and left the second in as well.
    • Also, Tommy's legs visibly shift places impossibly fast upon being thrown.
  • Lord Zedd apparently decided to make the Z-Putties weakness the most prominent part of their anatomy.
  • When Zordon talks about the Z-Putty weaknesses, he reminds the Rangers of their weaknesses despite the fact that they'd already know them.
  • Zedd creates Pirantishead from a piranha in the fictional Rampoon River, which is presumably meant to be located in Angel Grove. Piranhas are native to South America and are not known to be found in the wild in North America.
  • When Jason summoned the Dinozords, the buildings surrounding the Rangers suddenly vanish and are replaced by the top of a building in the background.
  • When Pirantishead freezes the Dinozords, the Pterodactyl Dinozord is suspended in midair. It's not clear why the Zord would not simply fall to the ground, unless the spell provides for its midair suspension.
  • The Sabertooth Tiger Dinozord is frozen while in the midst of the Megazord transformation even though the Rangers didn't call for the Megazord and had yet to enter the Zords at all.

Part II

  • In the preview, Mallow calls Lord Zedd "the ruler of the Dark Galaxy" despite the fact it was never actually named in part I beyond "Zedd was off conquering another galaxy."
  • Part II's preview completely omits the first appearance of the Z-Putty Patrollers. Mallow goes from “Lord Zedd is back and sealed Rita” to “the Rangers confronted Pirantishead.”
  • They reused the error revolving the Sabertooth Tiger in Megazord formation for no reason during the preview.
  • The entire team calls for the Tyrannosaurus and not just Jason.
    • Also, the Rangers call on the Tyrannosaurus despite it already having been shown getting deployed in part I.
      • As well as this, when the Rangers call upon the Tyrannosaurus, the buildings change from what earlier establishing shots in part I showed.
  • When the Tyrannosaurus lands from jumping into the city at the start of the episode, it is clearly in the countryside and not the city.
  • When Jason said “we’re not beat yet Rangers.” at the start of, the buildings surrounding the Rangers suddenly vanish. Unlike before, the background was just a blank blue gradient.
  • When Jason says that the Rangers' only hope is Tommy and his Zord, no debris surrounds them but a lot is piled around them when Tommy arrives.
  • When Tommy called upon the Dragonzord, it roars as it's head emerges from the ocean but its mouth doesn't move.
  • After saying that the Dinozords would finish the Rangers off, Pirantishead completely vanishes from the city battle with no explanation.
  • When they began the city rampage, the Tyrannosaurus and Dragonzord land despite having no reason to jump.
    • Also, mountains can be seen in the background behind the landing Tyrannosaurus despite them being in the city.
  • The Dragonzord prepares to attack the Rangers with its missiles but then doesn't for some reason.
    • Also, the Dragonzord is then suddenly seen rampaging through the docks and not the city.
  • In the recycled smoke stack eating segment, the smoke stack jump cuts from being held in it's hand to suddenly being in it's mouth due to cutting down the first shot.
  • The Tyrannosaurus can be seen smoking after the Dragonzord destroyed the smoke stack despite not being hit by anything. This was a result of reusing footage from "Doomsday-part I."
  • After Tommy suggested using his Dagger to distract the Dragonzord and allow the others to take back control, the Dragonzord is seen swinging its tail but the next shot had it facing forward without the tail wipping.
    • It can't just be excused as two angles of the same shot since the first shot had a lot of smoke behind it whereas the second did not.
  • When the Rangers are injured by explosions caused by the Dragonzord, the original Putty Patrollers can briefly be seen in the background.
    • Also, Tommy completely vanished despite having just been with them in the previous shot.
      • As well as this, Jason suddenly has his Power Sword out only for it to vanish in the very next shot.
  • When the Rangers jump onto a building to confront the Dragonzord, the buildings and trees in the background do not match the surrounding shots on them on ground level.
  • Jason looked up at Tommy when he said it was a good idea to regroup despite the fact he should be on the same level as them.
  • When Jason withdraws the Rangers from the Zord fight, Tommy is missing from the group.
  • When the Rangers see their new Zords via illusions in the sky, the roars of the Lion and Griffin Thunderzords are switched.
  • The Griffin Thunderzord does not look much like a griffin. It does not have an eagle's head; it looks more like a dragon with a backward-facing horn, which is much larger than the Unicorn Thunderzord's forward-facing horn.
  • Zordon refers to the "power of thunder" but what that is never gets explained.
  • Zordon says that the Unicorn Thunderzord "has mystical powers and wisdom" despite the fact that the Thunderzords are not sentient.
  • Jason compares blocking the control signal to reprogramming despite the fact they were actively being controlled and the signal meant they hadn't just been reprogrammed.
    • Also, Billy then falsely confirmed this.
  • When Billy and Trini teleport to the former's garage, Kimberly shifts to the left slightly. This is due to the teleportation effects messing with the shot.
  • Pirantishead's costume in U.S. footage looks terrible.
  • Whilst debating whether or not they should confront Pirantishead for a second time, Trini says “this monster could do a lot of damage before they’re done.” despite the fact Pirantishead is a single male monster.
  • At two points in the episode, during the Pirantishead debate, Jason says that they have to morph and stop him despite the fact they were still in their Ranger suits.
  • The Rangers apparently didn't initially spot Pirantishead despite him being on top of a nearby hill.
  • Kimberly tells the Rangers to stop because the Putties had arrived before the Putties had actually appeared.
  • Lord Zedd was worried about Pirantishead being seen by Bulk and Skull for no reason.
  • After Tommy catches a Putty mid-jump kick which was aimed at Jason, they throw him sideways but the next shot has them throwing him forwards.
  • The Rangers easily defeated the Putties and kept them down despite not hitting their Z's until the very end.
  • Zack states that the new Putties were hard to beat despite easily having beaten six earlier on.
  • Despite Pirantishead playing his flute to use his energy blasts, freeze mist, and Zord control smoke, one can clearly see that the mist itself is coming from the center of his mouth. This is most evident when he takes control of Bulk and Skull's vehicles.
  • Zordon tells Jason that the Thunderzords were on standby and then immediately says they couldn't be summoned without the other Zords in their fleet. This would mean that they're inoperable and not that they were on standby.
    • Also, this was clearly proven false later on since the Thunderzords weren't created until later from the remains of the Dinozords so they couldn't be on standby anyway.
  • In the final shot, the misty white aura surrounding the Rangers was missing despite them having been blasted not ten seconds earlier.
    • Also, Jason rolled away from the Rangers after being blasted but was then suddenly with them after the camera cut to a shot of the Zords.
      • As well as this, Jason had his Power Sword when he rolled but it was then suddenly gone when we jump cut him to the other Rangers.

Part III

  • Pirantishead stops the Zords from attacking the Rangers and finishing them off for no reason.
  • The rally racers somehow managed to completely avoid seeing the gigantic Dragonzord and Tyrannosaurus despite them apparently being within shooting range.
  • At the end of the opening scene, Jason says that they should spread out to distract the Zords from attacking the rally. However, the very next time we cut to them, they have not done this and are just standing around insulting the monster.
  • In the scene where Jason calls Pirantishead "tuna breath", Pirantishead claims that the Rangers can't attack him because the Zords were protecting him when the Zords were quite far away attacking the rally.
  • When the man with the binoculars says “Check this out” after seeing Bulk and Skull reversing infinitely, his lips don’t even move.
  • The Dragonzord's missiles cause a single explosion, hitting no-one whereas the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord's breath attack (which could previously vaporize monsters) just threw up an annoying dust cloud.
    • Also, the explosion that the Dragonzord's missiles caused occurred in the quarry and not the countryside where the racers were. This is due to recycling footage from the episode that later became "Zedd Waves."
  • Billy didn't have the signal blocker when he and Trini flipped onto the battlefield but had it when they ran over to the others.
  • When the Tyrannosaurus stamps down ater the signal jammer fails, if one looks closely enough, the signal jammer is not with them but appears in the follow-up shot.
  • Zack's Power Axe appears to be missing some components from its design during the Power Blaster scene.
  • Jason loudly announced that they were faking out Pirantishead before they did so.
  • Pirantishead recovered from the Power Blaster but proceeded do do nothing until Zedd made him grow.
  • When the Tyrannosaurus and Dragonzord nearly step on the Rangers before being released from Pirantishead's spell, the shadows on the ground clearly show two people holding the feet in order to create the forced perspective of the shot.
  • It is unknown how Zedd managed to destroy all the Dinozords when four of them weren't even close by at the time while still letting the Dragonzord escape despite it being right next to Tyrannosaurus when the earth opened up.
  • When Trini reacts to the loss of the Dinozords, trees can be clearly seen behind her despite being in a quarry.
  • After most of the Dinozords were destroyed, the Rangers regroup in the countryside and not the quarry despite that being where they were moments before.
  • When Jason tells Tommy that Zedd hadn't gotten to the Dragonzord, Billy can be seen holding the space shuttle from "High Five.
  • When Pirantishead catches the Growth Bomb, a wire can be seen attached to his fin.
  • Zordon refers to the new Megazord formation as the "Mega Thunderzord", even though he called it the "Thunder Megazord" (its official title) in just the previous episode when introducing the new Zords to the Rangers.
    • This inconsistency would reappear in multiple episodes in dialogue from the Rangers themselves.
  • During each shot of the Thunderzords, the roars of the Unicorn and Griffin Zords are switched. This error continues for the rest of the season.
  • The Lion Thunderzord has two extra rear legs during the American-produced transformation from the Mastodon. This error will present throughout most of its appearances.
  • When Alpha says "go get 'em Power Rangers", there is a wideshot but Tommy is not visible despite him being in the Command Center with Alpha and Zordon.
  • When they form the Thunder Megazord, the Rangers call the Thunder Megazord the Mega Thunderzord.
  • During the battle sequence between Pirantishead and the Thunder Megazord, the Dino Megazord is briefly visible twice. The first was when he wraps it up with his nunchaks and another when they repeat the shot when he zapped it.
  • During the close-up of it getting shocked, Magnet Brain's magnet can briefly be seen attached to the Thunder Megazord's chest.
  • The shot of Pirantishead's destruction was clearly of him being hit by the Ultrazord due to the superimposed explosion.
  • Vase Face can be briefly seen when the Thunder Megazord electrocutes Pirantishead using his own chain.
    • Also, when it charged up the Thunder Saber to shock him, said weapon went from being held close to its body to high in the air in a jumpcut.
  • Despite Tommy making it clear that he was sad over losing his powers, Jason asked what he meant.
  • When he and the other Rangers returned with their bikes near the end, Zack puts his bandanna back on despite having no reason to take it off and it being on when he arrived with the others to help Bulk and Skull.
  • When Trini coughs to get Bulk and Skull's attention to inform them that they had to double up on their quadbikes, her mouth does not move.
