The Barillian Sting is the fourteenth episode of Power Rangers in Space. It is the beginning of the four-episode story arc that introduces Darkonda, a ruthless bounty hunter.

Synopsis[]

Darkonda, an evil monster/scientist, joins the Dark Fortress crew, much to Ecliptor's chagrin. He unleashes an alien insect known as the Barillian Bug on the Power Rangers. Carlos is stung by it, and Andros remembers it as a deadly insect that once attacked his homeworld. Cassie also ends up stung, this time by Carlos himself, and they both mutate into Barillian monsters, thus Ashley has to try to fight off Cassie and Carlos. While this occurs, Andros and T.J. head to KO-35 to search for any remaining antidote and cure their buddies before they destroy the Megaship.

Plot[]

T.J., Carlos, and Cassie are on a non-descript planet looking for Zordon. Cassie wanders away from the other two for a moment and notices foot prints that appear to have been made by Piranhatrons. Carlos posits that the same henchmen might have Zordon when T.J.’s scanner starts beeping, having picked up a distress signal. T.J. determines the direction from which the signal and they rush towards it.

It is then revealed that Ecliptor is lying in wait to ambush the trio using a false distress signal and orders the Quantrons to ready their attack but they are interrupted by Darkonda. Ecliptor and Darkonda exchange some unpleasant words with each other ending in Ecliptor telling Darkonda to stay away from Astronema.

As the Rangers close in on the signal’s source, Darkonda mocks Ecliptor for setting up an ambush calling it predictable. Ecliptor gives the order to attack the Rangers and the battle begins. Darkonda releases the first Barillian Bug and it stings Carlos. T.J. and Cassie rush to his aid and they teleport back to the Astro Megaship. Ecliptor turns to confront Darkonda about his interference but he is no longer there and Ecliptor teleports back to the Fortress.

Back on the Astro Megaship, the team is scanning Carlos who is having a noticeable reaction to the sting, with red and blue markings appearing on his arm. Carlos mentions that it was some kind of bug and Andros asks him if he feels cold, possibly recognizing the bite. Andros pulls T.J. aside and have an inaudible conversation.

Ecliptor storms into the bridge of the Dark Fortress insulting the henchmen and admits to Astronema that something went wrong on their mission but declares that he won’t fail her. Just then, Darkonda enters and introduces himself to Astronema claiming that they have met previously some time ago but she does not remember him. Ecliptor attempts to highlight Darkonda’s shady characteristics. Darkonda appreciates Astronema’s hesitance and claims he’s already taken down one Ranger, promising to deliver the rest and disappears. Astronema asks what that means and Ecliptor explains that Darkonda released a Barillian Bug during their ambush which stung the Black Ranger. Astronema is surprised, calling Darkonda’s plan “brilliant” and walks off, leaving Ecliptor irritated.

Back on the planet, T.J. is showing Andros where the confrontation happened but they’re ambushed by Darkonda who is holding the Barillian Bug and runs off. T.J. and Andros morph and pursue Darkonda on their Galaxy Gliders. Darkonda having gained some ground on them, releases another Barillian Bug and it attacks the Rangers. T.J. circles around and Andros blasts the bug. They retrieve the bug and Andros identifies it telling a brief story about how the same bugs attacked his home planet of KO-35, turning the residents into Barillian Bugs themselves. He recalls that an antidote was made on KO-35 and decides that they need to retrieve it while Ashley and Cassie contain Carlos as he slowly transforms.

When Andros and T.J. arrive back on the Astro Megaship, they find Cassie and Ashley recovering from an attack made by Carlos who had already completed his transformation and they begin searching the ship.

The ship goes to hyper-rush inbound for KO-35. Back on the Dark Fortress, having lost the Astro Megaship’s signal, Darkonda reveals that there is an antidote for the Barillian Sting on KO-35 and the Rangers are headed there to acquire it. He advises that they get there before the Rangers and Astronema orders Darkonda to be there waiting for them.

As Andros and the others search the ship, T.J. and Cassie spot Carlos and they all converge on him in the engine room. They can not shoot being so close to the engine and Carlos attacks, stinging Cassie in the process. As they approach KO-35, the team is forced to restrain Cassie until they have the antidote. T.J. and Andros head for the launch tubes while Ashley makes for the bridge to defend it. On their way there, the boys are ambushed by Carlos but evade him and head down to the planet’s surface where they enter the lab, blast the doors open, and successfully get the antidote but they are ambushed yet again, this time, by Darkonda. T.J. is given the antidote to take back to the ship while Andros fights Darkonda, using his Battlizer to briefly overwhelm Darkonda.

D.E.C.A. informs Ashely of a disturbance in the infirmary when Cassie and Carlos, now both fully transformed, begin attacking the bridge. She attempts to reason with them to no avail, but T.J. arrives just in time to administer the antidote. Once healed, the team link up with Andros before Darkonda destroys the last of the antidote and unleashing a full-grown Barillian Bug and making him grow.

The Rangers call the Astro Megazord and they defeat the monster using the Astro Megazord Saber.

Upon Darkonda’s return to the Dark Fortress, Ecliptor is trying to convince Astronema to get rid of him, but Dakronda tells her that Andros is the only true “Space Ranger” and that he has a plan to separate Cassie, T.J., Carlos, and Ashely from Andros to exploit their weakness.

On KO-35, Ashley approaches Andros standing atop a building reminiscing about his long-lost sister and the last time he saw her. Andros says he feels close to finding her and they depart.

Errors[]

  • When Carlos turns into a Barillian, he is shirtless. But when he reverts back to normal, he's now wearing his Megaship jacket, along with the black shirt underneath.
  • Andros and T.J. morphed without pressing any button.
  • When T.J. says "You mean Carlos is going to become one of those things?" the zipper on Andros's suit is visible.
  • When Carlos ambushes Andros and T.J. on the Megaship, he and the debris from the ceiling appear to fall twice.
  • When Carlos and Cassie state they have a score to settle, the crew's reflection is visible off their helmets.
  • Just before Darkonda makes the Barillian Bug grow, the Rangers are behind Andros, but seconds later T.J. is in front. Then when the Rangers call for the Astro Megazord, Andros is behind them all.

Notes[]

  • Darkonda is introduced.
  • This is the first episode that they didn't use the Delta Megazord since it was introduced.
