Squashblight was a Jack-o'lantern/pumpkin/wizard-based Sporix Beast in Power Rangers Dino Fury Season 2 and the twenty-second Sporix Beast to awaken in the Power Rangers Dino Fury series. He served under Santaura and first worked with a conflicted Tarrick before he was switched to work with Wreckmate. He is the main antagonist of the Season 2 episode "New Leaf", the first part of the three-part "Void Knight Defection Saga".
History[]
Using her telekinetic powers, Santaura opens the machine and unleashes Squashblight. She orders Tarrick to take the Beast with him so the latter could make the humans pay. Tarrick tries to convince Santaura to let go of her hatred as he never wanted to hurt the humans, but she argued that her lover had no problems endangering civilians when he gathered the Sporix. Tarrick said he never intended to harm people, and he only needed the Sporix to help her. However, Santaura is unconvinced and tells Tarrick to help her make the humans suffer, and then they can leave. Seeing that Santaura will not budge, Tarrick reluctantly takes Squashblight to Pine Ridge.
At the community pool, Squashblight and Tarrick teleport down as the Sporix Beast pours his venom into the pool. The Rangers teleport down after a call from the Ranger Hotline, but they see what the venom does to people. The affected people freeze into place and turn into human-shaped trees, though J-Borg is unaffected due to being an android. Tarrick notices a father see his daughter get affected by the venom and realizes what his actions have caused. Aiyon fires at Squashblight, but his attacks ricochet off his gourd-like skin. The core five Rangers throw their Dino Daggers at Squashblight, but the same thing happens. Tarrick has had enough and teleports Squashblight from the pool, though the latter plans on using his venom to turn all of Pine Ridge into trees. Before leaving, Ollie collects some venom so he and Solon can make an antidote and restore Squashblight’s victims. In the meantime, the other Rangers will warn civilians to stay away from the water sources.
Back at Area 62, Squashblight complains about the pool closures, but Slyther suggests he go into the sewers and affect the citizens. Squashblight turns down that suggestion as his skin weakens when he is in the dark, so Mucus suggests infecting the river. That way, it will affect everyone at home. Seeing that things have gone too far, Tarrick confronts Santaura and begs her to stop before more people get hurt. He shows her the spaceship he finished fixing and says they can leave Earth now. However, Santaura rejects Tarrick’s offer and destroys the spaceship before blasting at the latter.
Squashblight pours his venom into the river as the Rangers confront him and Wreckmate. The two summon the Hengemen as the Rangers morph. Wreckmate does all the heavy lifting during the fight before telling Squashblight to fight the Rangers. As before, Squashblight is unaffected by the Ranger’s attacks before leaving to grow under Wreckmate’s orders. Meanwhile, Tarrick recovers from Santaura’s attack and says she must be stopped before teleporting away. However, Santaura says Tarrick will regret it.
With the Rangers occupied by Wreckmate, Zayto asks Solon to send out a Zord to deal with the giant Squashblight. Solon sends out the Ptera Rex Zord, a combination of the Ptera Freeze and T-Rex Champion Zords, which takes on Squashblight. As Wreckmate takes down the Rangers, Tarrick teleports down. Tarrick tells the Rangers he is not here to fight them and warns them about Santaura, calling her Void Queen. He tells them Squashblight’s weakness to darkness, but Wreckmate deems him a traitor and retreats to Area 62. After telling the Rangers, Tarrick leaves as Squashblight unleashes a giant venom cloud to make it rain over the city. However, Ollie says they can weaken him if they could send Squashblight into the dark cloud. Going with that idea, Zayto summons the Pacha Smash Zords and combines them with the Ptera Rex Zord to form the Ptera Smash Ultrazord. The new Ultrazord fights Squashblight on the clouds and kicks him into the dark clouds. When the Ultrazord attacks Squashblight, the Rangers see that Tarrick was telling the truth as their attacks are more effective than earlier. Zayto summons the Mega Fury Saber as the Rangers defeat Squashblight with the Fusion Ultra Punch. As the cloud clears up, Squashblight turns back into a Sporix Cell, which Zayto claims. The rest of the Rangers go back to the pool and use the antidote on the victims, restoring them to normal.
Even though he is not seen again, Squashblight participates at the invasion of the Sporix during the final battle against the Rangers and the Rafkonians. He is defeated off-screen by the Rafkonians, his Sporix Egg was used by Void Queen to create the chimera-themed Sporix Beast, the Nemesis Beast and after the Rangers' victory, he is imprisoned forever by Master Red, Blue and Green in a crystal.
Personality[]
Personality-wise, Squashblight is sneaky and incredibly mischievous, as he enjoys polluting the pool with his venom to turn people into trees, one of which even turned a little girl name Samantha into a tree, though he is loyal to Void Queen. Much like Shockhorn, he speaks in a southern accent (but in Squashblight's case, it sounds either New Orleans or Cajun).
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Venom Generation: Squashblight's primary ability is being able to create sticky purple venom from his fingers and hands.
- Tree Transmutation: When infecting the water supply, Squashblight's venom can turn people into trees should they go in contact with it.
- Teleportation: Squashblight can teleport to any location in a purple energy column.
- Hengemen Summoning: Squashblight can summon an army of Hengemen to aid him in battle.
- Enlarging: Like most Sporix Beasts, Squashblight can enlarge himself by using the energy he gains while fighting.

Abilities[]
- Strength: Squashblight possesses a great deal of raw strength, being able to overpower three Dino Fury Rangers with ease.
- Armor: When compared to the Sporix Beasts fought by the Dino Fury Rangers previously, Squashblight possesses a seemingly indestructible armor that can withstand some of the strongest direct attacks from his foes should he be in the sunlight. He was even able to take attacks from the Ptera Smash Ultrazord.
- Deflection: Squashblight's armor is strong enough to deflect projectiles.
- Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Squashblight is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant who can easily match the Rangers in battle.

Arsenal[]
- Staff: Squashblight wields a staff in combat.
- Pumpkin Umbrella: Squashblight also wields an orange pumpkin-decorated umbrella.
- Limited Flight: Through his umbrella when open, Squashblight can levitate from the ground and flow alongside the wind currents.
- Electric Umbrella Attack: Through his umbrella when closed, Squashblight can fire purple colored lightning beams from the tip. This was his strongest move as it was able to deal high damage to the Ptera Smash Ultrazord.
- Candy Basket: Squashblight wields a basket containing a myriad of candies that can create a giant storm cloud of his venom.
Behind the Scenes[]
Portrayal[]
- Squashblight is voiced by John Leigh, who also portrays Wreckmate in the series.
Design[]
- Squashblight appears to be a pumpkin mixed with a wizard.
Etymology[]
- His name may come from Phytophthora capsici, a plant pathogen that causes blight and rot to cucurbits (plants of the gourd family).
Notes[]
- Squashblight's staff was recycled from Versix, the monster from the Halloween special episode of Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel, "Monster Mix-Up".
- Squashblight's suit is a repainted and modified version of Fogshell.
- Squashblight is the only antagonist of the three-part "Void Knight Defection" Saga to fight a Megazord.
- Squashblight is the first Sporix Beast to serve Santaura and the first one to be hatched purposefully from Void Knight's collected Sporix as Junkalo and Doomsnake hatching were not intended.
- Ironically, Squashblight worked alongside Wreckmate on his second deployment as he and the general are voiced by the same voice actor.
