Spectral Empress Iliess (妖帝イリエス Yōtei Iriesu, 1-34) was the leader of the Iliess Majin Tribe and the third general of the Space Pirates Barban to face the Gingamen. A spiteful and covetous Egyptian-themed sorceress, Iliess valued money even over the lives of her own family and always demanded monetary compensation upon a successful plan, a trait that did not go unnoticed by Captain Zahab.
History[]
Past[]
Leader of the Iliess Majin Tribe, Iliess' Majin are based on mythological creatures. Like their general, Iliess' Majin are all magic users and their method of reviving Daitanix involves the use of various magical spells and rituals. Their Balban Extract container is a leather waterskin, and upon drinking from it, they would always proclaim their unyielding nature. Several of her Majin were also related to her, either as children or some other relative. She is the niece of Barreled Scholar Bucrates. 3,000 years ago, Iliess and her Majin Tribe were sealed away with the rest of the Balban by the first generation of Gingamen.
Gingaman[]
Iliess was released in 1999 alongside the rest of the Balban when the seal breaks from an earthquake. Leading an army of Yahtots in an invasion of the countryside to steal precious jewels and gold, Iliess was joined by the rest of the Balban but was confronted by the new generation of Gingamen who force her and the other generals to retreat.
TV STORY-Chapter 1: The Legendary Blades
Enraged that their enemies have returned after 3,000 years, Zahab turned his generals' attention to their ship, Daitanix, and that its seal still remained intact, forcing the Balban to focus on ways to revive it with Zahab offering a massive fortune as a reward to whoever managed to succeed, which excited the generals. His generals all called for one of their Majins to appear, in Iliess' case, it was her daughter Medoumedou. However, they all started to argue over who should be in charge of the task, for which Shellinda broke up the fight and told them it was the captain's decision to make. Tired of their arguing, Zahab decided to end their squabble with a game of poker, where the general with the Joker card would be chosen, for which Sambash did, and was put in charge of finding an energy source capable of reviving Daitanix, which left the other generals disappointed.
TV STORY-Chapter 2: The Return of the Starbeasts
The generals are once again arguing and fighting with each other, for which Zahab pointed out that arguing and sabotaging each other was the reason they got sealed 3,000 years ago. With the return of the Starbeasts and to prevent any further arguments, Captain Zahab appointed Sambash as the new field commander and left Daitanix's resurrection solely in his hands, Zahab forbade Iliess, Budoh, and Battobas from interfering with any of Sambash's plans, leading to them leaving his cabin in anger.
TV STORY-Chapter 3: The Earth's Wisdom
Following the death of Sambash at the hands of the Gingaman, Iliess and Battobas urged Captain Zahab to choose one of them to be the new field commander to revive Daitanix, however, Budoh was appointed by the captain as the new field commander, where he hoped to seek out the Lights of Ginga that were brought to Earth 3,000 years ago by the warrior Sambash killed before they were sealed away, leaving Iliess and Battobas disappointed.
TV STORY-Chapter 13: Beast Attack Reversal
Earlier, Barreled Scholar Bucrates was humiliated by Samurai General Budoh, who did not need Bucrates's knowledge to help him search for the Lights of Ginga, and Bucrates went to his niece for assistance in regards to trying to remove him from command. Iliess sent fake Lights of Ginga for Budoh's Majin Hyoudogasa to find while he was battling GingaRed and BullBlack. Bucrates and Iliess are seen towards the end of the episode laughing at Budoh's failure to capture the Lights of Ginga, and how they tricked his minion.
TV STORY-Chapter 20: The One-Man Battle
Iliess was informed by her uncle about how Budoh's plan to draw the Lights of Ginga out from under the Earth was working, where she assured him that he will fail again like he has in the past, and that if she had a plan if the Lights of Ginga did happen to surface.
TV STORY-Chapter 22: The Appearance of Light
After the Lights of Ginga were discovered and captured by Budoh's Shogun, Dotoumusha, Iliess sent her daughter Medoumedou to intercept the monster before he returned with the Lights. Disguised as Budoh, Medoumedou suggested to Dotoumusha that he should use the Lights of Ginga on himself and destroy the Gingaman, which made Budoh appear as a traitor to the captain and the other members of the Balban, and led to his rank as general being stripped and being thrown into a cell. She was seen laughing in her quarters, seeing that now Budoh's time as field commander is over, and her time will soon begin.
TV STORY-Chapter 23: End of the Contest
Iliess was put in charge of destroying Budoh when he escaped in an attempt to clear his name. She instructed Medoumedou to go after Budoh, where she informed the latter about how her mother framed him and that he had nowhere left to go. As a result, Budoh killed her and attempted to reclaim the Lights of Ginga from the Gingamen himself, but he was killed in battle. After Budoh's death at the hand of GingaRed, Iliess was fully appointed as the new commanding general.
TV STORY-Chapter 24: Budoh's Tenacity
Once in charge, she intended to revive Demon Beast Daitanix through various forms of sorcery:
She demonstrated to Zahab how her minion, Wangawanga's spear broke a seal placed on a Yahtot, one very similar to the seal that's on Daitanix. Zahab promised her a chest of gold if she succeeded in reviving Daitanix, but if she failed, she would end up just like Budoh and Sambash. Iliess sent her Majin into the city to harvest the hatred from human souls in order to increase his spear's power enough to break Daitanix's seal. After attacking many people in the city, Wangawanga sensed an overwhelming hatred coming from BullBlack but was stopped from harvesting BullBlack's hatred by GingaRed. He was defeated by the Beast Armor Shine Gingaman's Ginga War Radiance attack attack and later killed by Super Armor Shine GingaiOh, but his spear fell into the crater created by BullBlack and almost succeeded in blowing up the entire planet, until BullBlack sacrificed himself to reverse the damage.
TV STORY-Chapter 25: The Black Knight's Determination
Following BullBlack's death, Zahab reminded Iliess that her goal should be working on for reviving Daitanix. She called for the Majin, Geltgelt, and to trap the souls of 39 people in mirrors and then sacrifice them to power an anti-sealing spell to break Daitanix's seal. After capturing several people, including four of the Gingamen, Geltgelt prepared for the sacrificing ceremony. As the ceremony went on, Daitanix began to shake, implying that it was working. However, after being tracked by Ryoma and Hyuga, Geltgelt's ceremony was stopped and his sacrifices were freed from captivity. He was beaten by the Beast Armor Shine Gingamen's Ginga War Radiance attack and used the Balban Extract to grow into a giant. He managed to captured Super Armor Shine GingaiOh within a giant mirror, but was shocked by the appearance of the new Black Knight, Hyuga, and was killed by BullTaurus' Bison Fierce Cut attack.
TV STORY-Chapter 26: Brothers of Flame
After Hyuga acquires the power of BullBlack, Illiess called for her Majin Morgumorgu to steal the essence of 81 girls to create a golden elixir to revive Daitanix. He attempted to trick Hyuga by disguising himself as a girl and distract him while he collected the essences of 80 girls and his human identity would be his final victim. He tried to kill Hyuga by poisoning his juice, but he was fooled by Hyuga, who revealed that him and Saya knew of his plans and tricked him to get the essences he stole back. He was beaten by the Black Knight's Black Chop attack and GingaPink's Ginga War Radiance, and then killed by Super Armor Shine GingaiOh and BullTaurus.
TV STORY-Chapter 27: The Mummy's Allure
Zahab told Iliess that the magic her Majin were doing seemed to be unreliable, with her answer being that an obstacle was merely in the way. Tired of her excuses, Shellinda told her to break the seal on Daitanix, which angered the latter. Bucrates assured Shellinda that Iliess had already come up with her next plan, which was to have her Majin Hielahiela to use her special arrows to freeze and steal the emotional/empathic souls of 111 people and place them inside of a giant iceberg to feed to Daitanix. After encountering the Gingamen and the Black Knight, she tricked them into thinking they easily defeated her with their Beast Attack Cannons, all while continuing with her plan. She shot Haruhiko Aoyama, forcing him to come to her icy cave and enter her iceberg. However, her plan was discovered by Haruhiko's son, Yuuta, who tried to stop it but was restrained. Although she managed to acquire all 111 souls, Gouki arrived to help Yuuta but was thrown out of the cave. The arrival of the other Gingamen forced Hielahiela into a battle with them, while Yuuta attempted to break the iceberg. All of a sudden, Iliess appeared and used her crystal ball to levitate Yuuta up in the air to keep him from interfering, but GingaBlue slashed Iliess, which allowed to Yuuta to be put down. Although Iliess appeared to have the upper hand on him, GingaBlue managed to restrain her while Yuuta was able to destroy the iceberg, thus freeing the 111 souls Hielahiela captured. Angered at her failure, Iliess was forced to retreat, leaving her minion to fight the Gingamen and the Black Knight alone. Hielahiela was defeated by by the Beast Armor Shine Gingaman's Ginga War Radiance attack and and the Black Knight's Black Chop attack and then killed by Super Armor Shine GingaiOh and BullTaurus.
TV STORY-Chapter 28: Papa's Sudden Change
After Iliess' numerous failures to revive Daitanix, Zahab has Battobas call the Balban's old friend: Dark Merchant Biznella, to sell them some special weapons to defeat the Gingamen and the Black Knight. After Biznella arrives at the Rowdy Invincible Castle, he greets his old friend Battobas and presents Zahab with a remote control to his special weapons, which he claims has the power to destroy the other Starbeasts. However, he needs an incredible amount of energy to power the remote, so he asks if he can borrow the Yahtots.
TV STORY-Chapter 29: Dark Merchant
Following the success of the Steel Starbeasts' first battle as the Starbeasts won't fight against their own kind, Biznella opted to sell the Steel Starbeasts to the Balban for five chests of gold, for which Zahab agreed, infuriating Iliess. Shellinda silenced her, before Zahab offered to increase her reward for reviving Daitanix if she also destroyed the Gingamen and their Starbeasts with the Steel Starbeasts, which she easily agreed to, and was given the remote for them. She summoned the Majin Barukibaruki and gave the remote to him to control them. Barukibaruki used the remote control to summon GigaRhinos and GigaPhoenix to attack the city in order to draw out the other Starbeasts. The Gingamen arrived to stop them, with Barukibaruki claiming that the Steel Starbeasts were nothing more than puppets for the Balban to control. However, the Steel Starbeasts managed to regain their hearts and sided with the Gingamen before destroying Barukibaruki. This resulted in Biznella having to refund the Balban's payment with his ship as added interest, leaving Biznella trapped on Earth and in total despair. However, his old friend Battobas reminded him of who he was and asked Zahab if he could take him under his protection, to which the captain allowed, to which Iliess brushed off.
TV STORY-Chapter 30: The Steel Starbeasts
Following the loss of control over the Steel Starbeasts, Zahab announced to Iliess that for each day that Daitanix remained inactive, her gold reward would go down by one coin so that she wouldn't work for free, which made her upset. She then assured Zahab that she would revive Daitanix today. Iliess sent her Majin Gaaragaara to disguise himself as a fortune teller and use his special palm magic to mark the hands of 333 lucky people, which would drain their life force and turn them into stone, including Hayate and Yuuta. His scheme was discovered by the Gingamen and although he was beating them, they gained the upper hand on him and destroyed his talisman, thus saving the people turned to stone. Gaaragaara tried to finish off the Gingamen, but when GingaGreen showed up, he was defeated by the Beast Armor Shine Gingamen's Ginga War Radiance attack and the Black Knight's Black Chop attack. After he enlarged himself, he was killed by Super Armor Shine GingaiOh after being thrashed by GigaPhoenix and GigaRhinos.
TV STORY-Chapter 31: Cursed Stone
Iliess was seen admiring the amount of gold through the keyhole of the Balban's treasure room, confidently saying that she'll get them without losing another coin, before being surprised by the sudden appearances of Zahab, Bucrates, and Shellinda, with Shellinda remarking that she won't get her gold just by staring at them, for which Iliess angrily answers. Iliess informs the captain that her second daughter and Medoumedou's sister, Merudameruda, has already started her next plan to revive Daitanix: to gather the fear of 22 frightened people. Although she assures the captain that her plan will succeed, Zahab tells her to show the Balban that she is not just all talk and to produce some results, which she promises him she will. Merudameruda began trapping humans within her necklace, which was a nightmarish dimension that could invoke and drain the fear of those captured in it. Among her victims is Yuriko, whose older brother, Ichirou, calls the Majin out to bring his sister back from captivity. Merudameruda overpowers him before Ryouma drives her away. However, when the Gingamen corner her, Merudameruda summons Gorgondia to overwhelm the Beast Armor Shine Gingamen. With Ichirou providing them with time, the Gingamen use the Lights of Ginga to create the Galeo Pulsar, so GingaRed can destroy Gorgondia. Though her cycle was destroyed and her victims were freed, Merudameruda survived and drank the Balban Extract to fight Super Armor Shine GingaiOh with her illusionary magic. However, GigaRhinos intervened, and Merudameruda was killed by Super Armor Shine GingaiOh.
TV STORY-Chapter 32: The Mobile Horse of Friendship
Iliess was seen complaining to her uncle about the amount of gold coins that have been taken away from her reward for reviving Daitanix, just as Zahab and Shellinda enter to scold her for worrying about her reward when she should be focusing on reviving Daitanix. She informs them that she will use her trump card to complete the mission: her younger brother Desphias, where he will use his special masks to curse 3,333 people with despair and use that to revive Daitanix. All of a sudden, the castle begins to shake, with Bucrates confused as to why. Desphias manages to create tons of despair around the city, including in the male Gingamen, leaving only Hyuga and Saya to deal with him. After Saya's intervention, his plan failed and he was defeated by the Beast Armor Shine Gingaman's Ginga War Radiance and the Black Knight's Black Chop attacks. After he enlarged himself, he was killed by Super Armor Shine GingaiOh and GigaPhoenix. Iliess was devastated by her younger brother's death to the point where Bucrates consoled her.
TV STORY-Chapter 33: Yearning for Saya
Evil Empress Iliess' Endgame and Death[]
Following Desphias' death, Zahab was enraged at Iliess that even her brother failed to revive Daitanix. Iliess decided to take matters into her own hands before the reward was lost to her entirely. Setting a magic spire in the center of the city, Iliess sent out a plague of spectral lizards to drain the blood of 9,000 people before absorbing the souls of her all fallen Majin to become the Chimera-like Evil Empress Iliess (邪帝イリエス, Jatei Iriesu) whose body was covered with the faces of her fallen Majin and sporting reptilian limbs. After fending off the Gingamen, who were unable to transform due to the magic field generated by her spire, Iliess revived five of her fallen Majin (Wangawanga, Morgumorgu, Hielahiela, Barukibaruki, and Gaaragaara) to hold off the Gingaman should they ever return. But even after summoning an illusion of Yuuta to stop Ryoma, Iliess failed once again as Ryoma shattered the Spire, breaking the spell and freeing all of her victims.
Iliess's soulgem
Knowing that she had only this one chance to redeem herself, Iliess faced the Gingamen and, after weathering Black Knight's Black Chop and the Gingamen's Ginga War Radiance, she cast a spell to enlarge herself and easily bested both Super Armor Shine GingaiOh and BullTaurus before the Gingamen called in GigaRhinos and GigaPhoenix who double-teamed Iliess until the Gingamen could get GingaiOh back on its feet to finish her off with the Great Galaxy Beast King Cut. Afterwards, Bucrates recovered her soul gem and attempted to revive her with a ritual but was stopped by Zahab, who revealed he knew how he and Iliess had framed Budoh. As Bucrates tried to grab Iliess' soul gem, Battobas shatters it with his axe, where he explains that he'll use the shards to reawaken Daitanix's heart. Battobas succeeds Iliess as the new field commander.
TV STORY-Chapter 34: Invulnerable Iliess
Legacy[]
Following Iliess' death and Bucrates being thrown overboard for committing treason, Battobas and Biznella then use the shards from Iliess' shattered soul gem and succeed in reawakening Daitanix's heart, staving off the decay that the Demon Beast was suffering from its long inactivity. A black ribbon surrounded the banner of the Iliess Majin Tribe in memory.
TV STORY-Chapter 35: Gouki's Choice
During the events of Gingaman vs. Megaranger, Iliess was revived by Captain Gregory along with the other Balban, but was killed once again by the Gingamen with their Ginga Armor Shine.
Personality[]
Out of all the Balban, Iliess is by far the most greedy and materialistic, as while the other Balban generals were causing random destruction following their revival, she took the time to steal jewelry. She also expected a large bounty for reviving Daitanix. While she displays loyalty to Zahab, she does not display any loyalty to her fellow generals, having her daughter frame Budoh as a traitor so she could take over as acting field commander. Altogether, her greed and deception lead to her own downfall as Zahab knew that she and Bucrates set Budoh up, and decided to use her soul gem to awaken Daitanix's heart.
