The Soccadillo was an armadillo monster who served as the main antagonist of the episode "Second Chance."

History

The Soccadillo was created by Finster after Goldar saw Jason and Zack trained a kid called Roger to get him into Ernie's soccer team and suggested to Rita that they should provide "the equipment." However, he started out in a small ball like form which Finster planned to feed more energy. This would make him more powerful until he was unbeatable and could utterly destroy the Power Rangers but, when she saw Zack and Jason training Roger the following day, she refused to let it finish and sent him down with the Putty Patrol. The platoon ambushed the Ranger duo and kicked the Soccadillo to try and kill the two but they kept on ducking and diving to avoid it, even when the monster rolled straight at them. The other three Rangers were then summoned by Alpha and, whilst Trini stayed with Roger for some reason, the others charged at the platoon. The Putties then started to throw around the Soccadillo ball, at one point trying to behead Jason which he ducked. The entire group was soon defeated but the Soccadillo ball teleported away.

The Soccadillo soon reappeared in the quarry and changed into his monster form where he then encountered the Rangers again. They drew their Blade Blasters and tried to fight him but the Soccadillo easily defeated them with his claws before blasting them all down. Whilst Tommy got back his communicator, the Rangers joined up for their Blade Blaster Tower Formation but it had utterly no effect and he rolled through them like a bowling ball before summoning Putties. He then had them summon footballs and kick them at the Rangers, knocking them flat before turning into his ball form and having them kick him at the Rangers, knocking them all flat. Luckily, Zordon summoned Tommy who had been unable to hear his calls because Ms. Appleby confiscated his communicator which had been malfunctioning and going off constantly. Tommy morphed and took down the monster by kicking him into the cliff-side and they regrouped. The Soccadillo then retransformed into his ball form and came at them but Jason and Tommy knocked him out of it with their Power Punch. The Soccadillo was enraged but a flurry of Power Weapons hits took him down, Jason and Tommy landing the final hit with the Power Sword and Dragon Dagger.

The monster was crippled but, before the Rangers could summon the Power Blaster, Rita enlarged him and the monster believed himself to be undefeatable so the Rangers summoned the Megazord and the Dragonzord to prove him wrong. However, the monster defeated them easily by smacking them back and curled into a ball to defend against the Dragonzord's missiles. Zack had the idea to destroy him with the Power Sword once he uncurled but he floated and bashed into the Zords before uncurling. They advanced on him but he blasted them back so they summoned the Power Sword and finished off the Soccadillo with an energized slash. Tvicon TV STORY-Second Chance

Trumpet Top summoned an illusionary Soccadillo to wear out the Power Rangers enough that Lord Zedd would easily be able to destroy them. All that he did was handstand backwards several times to show off. Due to not really being there, the Soccadillo alongside the Saliguana, the Fighting Flea, the Rhinoblaster, the Mantis, the Stag Beetle and the Slippery Shark managed to "beat them" until they were worn out completely. However, Zordon saw through the plan, making the illusionary monsters cease to exist. Tvicon TV STORY-Orchestral Maneuvers in the Park

Soccadillo was among the monsters recreated by Finster to trap the Rangers in the Spectre Theater. Finster noted that the monsters he recreated for this occasion were some of Rita's favorites. Soccadillo also attended Zedd and Rita's wedding and caught Rita's bouquet in his mouth, remarking, "Weddings always make me cry." After that, he helped chase the Rangers as they retreated to the Command Center and assisted five other monsters in battling the White Tigerzord and the Thunder Megazord, where he was destroyed by the Thunder Saber. During Prince Gasket's attempt to destroy the Zeo Rangers with Tommy who had been brainwashed and the monster Altor, Soccadillo can be seen very briefly in the stands of Prince Gasket's battle arena. Tvicon TV STORY-King For A Day

Two years later, the Soccadilo was in the Machine Empire's army. He was presumably recreated by Finster and given to King Mondo as an act of good will, being seen in their invasion of KO-35 but was not seen when Zordon's Energy Wave hit. Tvicon TV STORY-Countdown to Destruction

Soccadillo was later seen as a patron of the Onyx Tavern. This seems to suggest that Zordon judged him worthy of survival for reasons unknown since Finster wasn't around to recreate him. Tvicon TV STORY-Heir to the Throne

Soccadillo was also later seen on Onyx during the auction to sell off the Pink Quasar Saber. Tvicon TV STORY-Protect The Quasar Saber

Personality

Just like the rest of Rita and Zedd's monsters, the Socadillo was a cunning, sneaky and unpredictable monster, that won't stop in his mission to destroy the Power Rangers but he is faithful to his masters. It is also possible that he reformed himself after the Zordon Era, as he stopped his battles with Rangers and was later seen post-Zordon Era.

Powers and Abilities

  • Strength: The Socadillo was strong enough to knock down the Rangers with single hits and knock back the Zords with single swings as well.
  • Durability-Whilst in his ball form, the Dragonzord's missiles bounced right off of his armor and the Tower Formation attack had no effect either. Even in his true monster form, he took multiple hits from all six Power Weapons with little harm.
  • Ball Mode: The Soccadillo could roll up into a ball form and attack by rolling (or getting kicked) into his enemies.
    • Flight: Whilst in his ball form, the Soccadillo could fly through the air to ram into his enemies at head level.
      • Abrupt Stop-The Soccadillo can stop himself in mid-air and thus defy physics as seen during his Putty fight when he stopped himself from crushing a Putty.
  • Electric Needles: According to Finster, the Soccadillo would gain these at full power although what these are or what they'd do is unclear since his power absorption was interrupted by Rita before he could develop them.
  • Energy Bolts: The Socadillo could project blue energy bolts from the spikes on his elbows. These took down all five Rangers with a single hit.
  • Energy Projection: The Soccadillo could project blue energy from his eyes strong enough to knock back the Megazord and Dragonzord with two hits.

Arsenal

  • Fists: Soccadillo never used any weapons and instead had large hands to slap his enemies with.

Behind The Scenes

Portrayal

  • The Socadillo was voiced by Brianne Siddall which is why his voice is so so high pitched. He does not initially make a noise in his monster form until he confronted the Rangers.
    • The Socadillo was her fourth role in the franchise the first being Willy, the second Jeremy, and the third role being the Octoplant (her first monster role overall).
      • The Socadillo was also the very first monster she voiced in more than one episode since the earlier characters and monster were one-offs.

Notes

  • The Soccadillo comes from what is commonly referred to as "Zyu2" footage, and was not seen in the original Zyuranger.
    • It is likely that Toei originally intended for the Soccadillo to be female but Saban either didn't get the memo or decided to make it male for some reason.
      • The biggest evidence for this is the chest area which resemble flat breasts similar to those on Fang (whose counterpart was female and changed to male due to the dark aspects of the original Zyuranger plot).
  • Despite his heavy armor, the Soccadillo was clearly very light since the Putties could kick it around with ease.
  • The Soccadillo was originally intended to be destroyed by the Ultrazord with an artifact of this change being a massive explosion that erupts over him instead of the typical energy slash.
    • The reason for this is unclear but it may have been a footage switch with the Dramole. It's believed the reason for that was because they felt they should use the newly reintroduced Green Ranger as part of the formation instead of re-using the Megazord finisher what would have been the literal 9th time in a row.
      • Others have speculated that it was just for time since, by the Zord fight's end, less than three minutes remain of the episode.
  • The actual spelling of the Soccadillo's name is unclear and has been spelled more accurately to soccer (from which his name is derived) and others more accurate to armadillo.
    • It does not help that there is no official confirmation of its spelling given the voice actors never actually got credited for their roles in the series. Their roles in the franchise are only known because of cast interviews.
  • The Soccadillo is very similar to the Armadeevil monster eighteen years later.
    • Both were horribly arrogant, both were armadillo based, both had nearly indestructible shells , both were fought by he primary Megazord of their respective foes, both could fire energy from thier eyes, and both could retract into their shells for a wheel like attack.
      • It should be noted however that the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers never actually destroyed his armor whereas the Samurai Rangers managed to crack Armadeevil's.
  • Back in early 2003, shortly after the series changed hands from Saban Entertainment to Disney, some of the monster costumes, including Soccadillo, were auctioned off by ABC Auctions. It sold for $510.00.
