Shinichi Saruhara (猿原真一, Saruhara Shin'ichi) is Saru Brother (サルブラザー, Saru Burazā), the Blue Ranger of the Donbrothers. He is the final member to join the team and second-in-command to Don Momotaro. Sonoi later briefly turns him into Taiyoki (太陽鬼, Taiyōki, lit. Sun Demon) until Taro arrived and snapped him out of it.

Shinichi is 21 years old at the beginning of Donbrothers. His birthdate is March 6, 2001.

Donbrothers[]

Shinichi was a young man interested in the art of haiku. When he was chosen to become Saru Brother, localized earthquakes happened at his house. The house also fell victim to thief Black Bear, who stole all lights from it.

His identity as Saru Brother was discovered by Haruka Kitou, who subsequently let him know about Don Momotaro's own identity as delivery boy Taro Momoi. The two once plotted to jump Taro, hoping that he would stop randomly beating them up in battle. When their scheme failed, they chose instead to ask Taro directly what the purpose of their mission was. He only gave vague answers, to the annoyance of Shinichi. He and Haruka frequently worked together, as they had not known the others' identities yet.

When Taro became ill and weak, Shinichi and Haruka went to Jin Momoi to ask what to do. They were presented with a recipe for kibi - dango, which Taro needed to eat once every few years to regain his strength. The two worked together at Kaito's café to make exactly 300 kibi - dangos. In spite of a few setbacks, Taro regained his strength thanks to Shinichi and Haruka's efforts.

He learned of Tsuyoshi Kijino's identity as Kiji Brother when Taro asked him to come to the salaryman's house to take care of a sick Tsubasa Inuzuka.

Shinichi first learned of the Kibi-Points after Taro had been struck down by Sonoi and vanished from Earth. Desperate to bring him back, Shinichi agreed to spend his points alongside Haruka's to do so. Taro only returned for a brief period, though, as after helping the team defeat Kousokuki, he faded away again. Shinichi's reckless use of Kibi - Points also resulted in his failure to create any more haiku poems. Fortunately for him, Taro's substitute Jiro Momotani gained his power as Don Doragoku in time and allied temporarily with Sonoi to successfully bring Don Momotaro back. Overcome with joy at seeing Taro alive and well, Shinichi was able to make haiku again.

On one occasion, Shinichi came across his predecessor - Shirai - who had previously been booted out of the team for having used his power for personal gain. While not approving of the man's actions, Shinichi still chose to help him, offering him advice on starting his own business. Shirai wanted to know what made Shinichi special, so he turned into Samuraiki to try to get an answer out of him. After the Hitotsuki's defeat, Shirai followed Shinichi's advice, opening a small ramen stall, having him as the first customer.

At a later date, Shinichi's house became a target for con man Tsutomu Kameda. He invited the Donbrothers (including Tsubasa, whose identity he had not yet known) to his house to act as a family, hoping to trick the con man into revealing his true colours. He deliberately left Taro out of the scheme, though, due to the latter's inability to lie. The team managed to scare Tsutomu to the point that he turned into Hitmitsuki. Shinichi helped the team defeat the monster without much trouble. Tsutomu later turned himself in to the police.

Near the end of the series, the three Noto generals had put aside their differences with select Donbrother members, and tried to join the team for good. Shinichi was among those disagreeing with their integration due to their long history of conflict with one another. Once Taro had been absorbed by Dengekiki, Shinichi was forced to work with the Noto, namely Sonoi, to save him. He grew to trust Sonoi enough to let him do the most important task of being the last one standing while everyone else got absorbed to let the enemy's guard down. Sonoi delivered, freeing all the team from the Hitotsuki, earning Shinichi's trust.

Shinichi continued his carefree lifestyle after the Donbrothers' final battle against Sonoya and Sonona.

Donbrothers vs Zenkaiger[]

Some time after the final battle, Shinichi had become an accomplished cram school teacher, thanks in part to Jiro's assistance. Jiro's poor leadership, however, had made him and the rest of the team sick of being Donbrothers. Shinichi could not make haiku anymore, and he announced his intention to quit the team in front of Taro. He resolved to continue as Saru Brother, though, after bearing witness to Taro's death due to having to fight Kikaiki alone.

Due to Sonoi's efforts, Taro came back to life to lead the Donbrothers again, much to Shinichi and the others' joy. He took part in the battle against Kikaiki and Kashiwa Mochi World alongside the Zenkaigers.

Once the fighting had finished, Shinichi quit his job at the cram school, able to make haiku once more.

Personality[]

Shinichi is an erudite person with a refined sense of taste. He is also a keen observer with a very analytical mind much like Sherlock Holmes that he uses to help his neighbors and friends. This talent has unofficially given him the title of “Professor” by those who know him.^[1] Shinichi is able to deduce a person's intentions after shortly interacting with them. This ability to read people comes in handy whenever his team has to deal with social situations. A kind man at heart, he usually uses his ability as Saru Brother to offer assistance, even in the most mundane things such as retrieving a lost soccer ball for a child.

He is also of the philosophy that money is inherently evil due to the troubles it brings humanity and thus does not carry any on his person. In fact, coming into direct contact with money will also physically burn his skin. Instead, he tries to "pay" others either by giving recitations of haikus or the aforementioned problem-solving routine in exchange for what he needs or wants such as free food. Those acquainted with Shinichi generally indulge him, allowing him to "pay" with those outlandish services.

Shinichi strongly believes in the power of thoughts and imagination, believing that it can be even more potent than that of material things. He is often shown eating imaginary food, deeming it more than enough to satiate his hunger. A firm devotee of "wabi sabi", Shinichi has an apathetic outlook on life, feeling that fate will carry him wherever he needs to be. By his own admission, he thinks that living in and of itself is a job. This has placed him in the unusual fortunate position of having never worked a real job in his entire life, as his cool charisma can often get him out of trouble.

He treasures his creativity greatly, taking pride in his ability to make haiku poems on a whim. In fact, he believes that life is meaningless without it, willing to die once he cannot create haiku anymore.

In spite of Shinichi's refined worldview, he is not above being skeptical. The most vocal dissenter when the Noto trio wish to join the Donbrothers, Shinichi cites their history of fighting against one another as proof why they can be unreliable. He also strongly disapproves of Jiro, due to the latter's split personality making him a wild card. Even Taro himself has irritated him every once in a while, courtesy of his inability to lie. It often takes sincere actions for to fully earn his trust. On a side note, he can be attracted by beauty, as he has tried to flirt with Sononi a few times. Though, he is sensible enough to not fall for her attempt to trick him later on.

A year after Taro has stepped down, Shinichi has started to be a realist and worked as a private teacher to help those in need for self-enlightenment, thanks to Jiro's charity. However, this has made Shinichi unable to make a haiku, his symbolic trait and he is saddened by this fact when Taro notices how dissatisfied he is. Initially quitting Donbrothers because of his new life, he chooses to return because the team is better when Taro is the leader. Shinichi despises the way Jiro's leading, together with his rigid battle formations.
