Shellshock was a tortoise monster with a traffic light on top of his body who served as the main antagonist of the episode "The Trouble with Shellshock".

History

Shellshock

Shellshock's clay mold

When Rita is feeling under the weather, Squatt and Baboo decide to take the initiative and create their own monster to destroy the Power Rangers and perhaps gain some significance amongst the Evil Space Aliens. As such, Squatt and Baboo sneak into Finster's workshop and slap together a monster mold and Shellshock is the end result after the mold goes through the Monster-Matic.

They then go to Earth and hide in the bushes where Baboo gives him a pep-talk and tells him to use his stop ray to render them immobile. Shellshock then uses his green light to obliterate the basketball that the Power Rangers (sans Tommy who has left for karate training) are playing with which gets them noticed and they morph. However, Trini is immediately hit by the green beam and jogs off unable to stop before Shellshock retracts his arm to reveal a baseball bat which he uses to make them dodge baseballs. Shellshock then hits the Rangers with his red light which freezes the Rangers in time even as Jason rolls. Preparing to finish them off, Shellshock retracts his head to reveal a cannon barrel but Jason blasts him and his creators with his Blade Blaster so they retreat.

Rita then confronts her two foolish flunkies for their stupid actions but decides to use their monster anyway, so enlarges Shellshock who immediately destroys a building whilst referencing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

With Tommy unreachable and Trini going after the Deandre Flowers (Shellshock's only weakness which will cripple his powers and unfreeze the other Rangers), Jason is forced to fight Shellshock alone in the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord. Shellshock poses as Squatt and Baboo watch on before retracting his hands to produce a hood hand and his baseball bat with which he soon wipes out the Tyrannosaurus. Fortunately, Zordon soon gets through to Tommy who summons the Dragonzord which is able to tail whip him down. Though initially exstacic to have more opponents, the Dragonzord smacks him so hard that he goes flying through the air towards the Tyrannosaurus who smacks him back before the Dragonzord clotheslines him back several miles. However, Shellshock feigns having sand in his eyes but is faking it which allows him to blast the Zord with his stop beam and render them useless. Thankfully, Trini finally arrives with the Deandre Flowers and jumps onto Shellshock's head where she sprinkles him with the pollen. The pollen cripples Shellshock whose traffic light malfunctions and he falls to his knees, freeing the Zords and the other Rangers. With Shellshock powerless, the Dragonzord bombards him with a double handed salvo of missiles before the Tyrannosaurus vaporizes him with its ground breath attack. When the Rangers are sent to the Island of Illusion, they are assaulted by illusions of monsters they have already defeated. Said monsters are the Eye Guy, the Pudgy Pig, the Snizzard, Shellshock, and the Pineoctopus although they disappear when they get close. Tvicon TV STORY-Island of Illusion

Personality

Shellshock's personality was very similar to that of a general or warrior, always up right and ready for battle. Shellshock was shown to be headstrong, arrogant and confident individual. He considered himself Invincible and thought he could easily take down the Power Rangers.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

  • Teleportation: Shellshock was able to teleport to any location at will by fading in and out of existence.
  • Traffic Lights: Shellshock could use the traffic lights on his back to do the following:
    • Green: From the top green light, Shellshock could fire the "Go-Beam" which was a green colored energy laser that, when it made contact with the enemy, caused foes to move non stop.
      • Green Energy Blast: Shellshock's green Go Beam could also do physical damage similar to that of an energy laser.
    • Red: From the bottom red light, Shellshock could fire a red laser blast that, when it made contact with the enemy, stopped and froze them in place.
  • Head Cannon: Shellshock could pull his head in to withdraw a massive cannon in his shell to fire white fire energy blasts. This could have apparently killed three Power Rangers with one blast had Jason not intervened and took down the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord with a single blast.

Abilities

  • Strength: Shellshock was powerful enough to overpower the Tyrannosaurus and obliterate a building with two swings.
  • Durability: Shellshock shrugged off being blasted by Jason's Blade Blaster and being juggled by slaps from the Tyrannosaurus and Dragonzord did little.

Weaknesses

  • Superior Numbers: Although Shellshock was able to overwhelm the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord, he was easily outmatched when the Dragonzord aided it. He only won the duel by cheating and freezing them.
  • Deandre Flowers: Shellshock's only weakness were some special flowers that only grew on the Mountain of Hope. Sprinkling its pollen on him completely destroyed his traffic light's abilities, freed his victims from his effects and rendered him useless.

Arsenal

  • Baseball Bat and Baseball: Shellshock could pull a baseball bat out of its shell to slap his enemies with.
    • Baseball Barrage: Shellshock was also able to use his baseball bat to bat baseballs at his enemies though Squatt had to provide them.
  • Left Hook Hand: Shellshock could pull a hook arm out of his left hand to slash his enemies.

Behind the Scenes

Portrayal

  • Shellshock was voiced by Richard Epcar in his first role and he would later go on to voice many characters in his career, including the Joker in Injustice: Gods Among Us and Injustice 2.

Design

  • He is a combination of a turtle and a traffic light.

Etymology

  • His name is a pun in reference to the term "shell shock".

Notes

  • Shellshock was the only instance where the Dragonzord finished off a monster, albeit with the help of the Tyrannosaurus' ground breath attack. The Dragonzord used a double barrage of missiles from both hands, something that would never be seen again.
