Sage is a young shepherd girl from the storm moon of Vaela who was recruited by Cadet Tula to attend the Academy. She is one of the three main protagonists of the spin-off comic series Ranger Academy. After gaining access to the Morphin Grid, Sage can transform into the Green Junior Ranger.
History[]
Sage was raised by Rhianth ever since she was a baby in the remote lunar colony of Vaela. She would often hear stories about the Knights of Stardust from her father whenever she was sad or scared as a small child, thus growing up with a sense of adventure and a love of heroism. While tending to her flock one afternoon, she daydreams of being a knight protecting a queen until a torrential superstorm begins forming and she tries to herd her goat-like animals back home. Nugget, the smallest of them, ends up stuck on the cliffs below & she goes to retrieve her.
Sage then witnesses a ship crash land and ignores her father’s rules about staying away from “offworlders” to aid the passengers inside as the flood waters rise. The hull was breached and, after guidance from Mathis & the revived Tula, Sage managed to get both out of the now waterlogged ship. After talking with them, she offers to let them stay at her home for the night as Vaela can get to below freezing during the evening.
She becomes interested in the Ranger Academy that the two cadets speak of and inquires about it as they travel, getting more excited until Mathis passes out from ingesting too much water in their lungs. Fortunately, her father was there looking for her and took them home. Unfortunately, he didn’t trust the outsiders and the father and daughter argued about helping them and about Sage’s desire to leave to go with the cadets. She cried about missing out on life in her treehouse for a bit and wanting more and then decided to run away from home by being smuggled abroad the Astro Shuttle by Mathis and Tula in a supply crate. Upon being given a “borrowed” Academy Power Coin by Mathis, Sage rehearsed a false backstory about herself to gain entry into the Academy. She was nervous about being around crowds and other kids her own age and immediately wanted to return home, but was encouraged by her new friends to give her first day at school a try. Tula gave her an older school uniform she wore as a First Year Cadet until the school could issue a new one for her. COMIC STORY- Ranger Academy Issue 1
After a nervous meeting with the school’s Headmaster to introduce herself and recite her fake backstory about being sent by her “Aunt Nugget”, Mathis dropped her off at the cafeteria to meet her new dormitory roommates; Theo and Lindy. Sage knew nothing about the Power Rangers and felt intimidated about the school and its subjects that she needed to learn, messing up in every class except Physical Education. After completing the first Morphin Trial, Sage could tap into the Green spectrum of the Morphin Grid, becoming a Green Ranger. However, due to seeing an upset Lindy being unable to morph and lacking confidence in herself, Sage lies to her classmates and teachers by claiming that she failed the trial and cannot morph. Upon their return to the Academy, Sage believes that she not only failed the Morphin Trial, she is uncomfortable with the fact she has a “cursed” Spectracite and brought it to the Academy. She goes to hide in the lake caverns underneath the school but Nika finds her and tells her stories about Rhianth's time at Ranger Academy. Nika says all that she can do now is make her next choice, just go one step at a time.
Sage comes across Mathis and Tula arguing and asks what they were arguing about. They both brush it off but Sage persists. As Mathis leaves, Tula and Sage head into the Battle Matrix. She thinks how exhausting it is to keep hiding the truth and she is tired of being afraid. Sage opens up the palm of her hand to reveal her Green Power Coin to Tula, saying something is wrong with her and she doesn’t know what to do, begging Tula to help her as she breaks down in tears. Personality[]
Sage is a little awkward socially with new people her own age or strangers due to being raised in isolation for most of her life outside of being with her father. She does however warm up to those who accept her as a friend. This isolation has also resulted in her missing out on experiences outside of her life on her farm, such as not knowing what ice cream is or understanding slang or anything that the universe outside her home has to offer. Her shepherding skills included knowing when the weather would shift, which proved to be an invaluable survival skill on her colony and in general on alien worlds.
Despite lacking academically in certain skills for now from her sheltered upbringing, Sage is a gifted athlete due to her years of roaming around the terrain of Vaela, swimming during the floods and climbing the moon’s trees and cliffs. This helped her excel at the Red Campus P.E. obstacle courses. This trait and her skills of detecting bad weather beforehand proved invaluable for her trial with her classmates and helped them reach the end goal of getting to Prism Peak safely.
Sage also doesn’t respond well to failure and understandably sometimes panics over it. Her elaborate story that had given her access to the Ranger Academy, also has agitated these episodes of panic because of imposter syndrome and fear of failing her first year of school. On her farm back in Vaela, Sage was adventurous and brave, often daydreaming about being a hero when tending to her space goats.
She is trying to investigate her father’s past and why he hates the Power Rangers, given that he was a former Academy student. Her relationship with him is a bit rough and sparked her rebellion to run away from home, given his overprotective nature, but the two of them genuinely love each other in spite of this.
