- ―Red Hawk's roll call[src]
Ryu Tendo (天堂 竜 Tendō Ryū) is Red Hawk (レッドホーク Reddo Hōku), leader of the Jetmen. He is the husband of White Swan.
History[]
Jetman[]
Ryu was originally a Sky Forcer code-named "W6" alongside his girlfriend Rie Aoi. The two loved each other greatly and were effective together in combat. This led Commander Aya Odagiri to select them for her Jetman project. On the day they were scheduled to receive their Birdonic Waves, Vyram attacked their military base just as soon as Ryu got his power. Rie was sucked out of the base into space and presumed dead. The remaining Birdonic Waves travelled to Earth and struck four random civilians. Ryu and his commander Aya escaped the exploding base and set out to find the four to form the Jetman. TV STORY-Ep. 1: Seek the Warriors
Ryu recruited Raita Oishi and Kaori Rokumeikan without much difficulty, but had particular trouble with Gai Yuki, who hated his straight - laced attitude. He and Gai even came to blows when they first met, but due to other circumstances, Gai did end up joining the team regardless. Once Ako Hayasaka was also found, Chojin Sentai Jetman fully assembled with Ryu as the field leader. TV STORY-Ep. 2: The Third Warrior
Due to the aforementioned difference in personality, Ryu and Gai clashed several times as they battled the Vyram. That Gai had feelings for Kaori, who herself was attracted to Ryu, only further complicated matters. Ryu, for the most part, did not even return Kaori's affection because of his lingering love for Rie, irritating Gai all the more.
Ryu has a grandmother, who came to visit him once to pressure him into marriage. This forced Raita and Kaori to discourage her into quitting. TV STORY-Ep. 7: Ryu's Marriage!?
During the Majin incident, Ryu realized that his lover was still alive, having been brainwashed into Vyram general Maria by Back Dimensional Count Radiguet. This reveal sent him into a downward spiral, to the point of having delusions about spending his time happily with Rie, thus made him neglect his duties as Red Hawk. TV STORY-Ep. 31: The Sentai Disbands However, after facing Maria in battle another time, Ryu steeled himself and returned to the team, much more determined to save her from evil than before, even if he had to do so by force. It was after this incident that Gai came to respect and understand Ryu more as a person. The two's relationship became stronger, resembling that of best friends. TV STORY-Ep. 32: Wings!! One More Time
Fueled by the desire to save Rie, Ryu hatched a plan to sneak into Vyram's base to destroy their matter transportation device, feigning his defection to the team in the process. While he did manage to infiltrate, the Jetmen were not successful in saving Rie or destroying the machine. Commander Aya still complimented Ryu and his comrades for the attempt. TV STORY-Ep. 34: Ryu the Traitor
When Emperor Tranza had disposed of four Jetmen by turning all of them into stone plates, Ryu was personally helped by Radiguet, disguised as a human, to defeat him. After assisting Red Hawk, Radiguet revealed his true colours and betrayed them both. Ryu managed to fend off Radiguet and land a decisive blow on Tranza, freeing his team. Together, they defeated the Emperor with the Fire Bazooka. TV STORY-Ep. 47: The Glory of Emperor Tranza
After Tranza's defeat, Radiguet seized power and transformed Maria into a vampire monster, sending her out to suck humans' blood. Ryu desperately pleaded her to stop, only to become a vampire himself. TV STORY-Ep. 48: A Kiss of Death Rampaging and attacking his teammates, Ryu became himself again thanks to Kaori and Commander Aya.
Ryu met vampire Maria once more and managed to restore her human self as Rie. Radiguet, however, did not allow her to return to humanity and tried to kill Ryu. Rie, considering herself irredeemable due to the evil deeds she had done as Maria, told Ryu to forget about her and move on to live a happy life on his own. She took Ryu's sword and stabbed Radiguet in the back. He had to watch as Radiguet slashed her as payback. Her death in Grey's arms moved Ryu to tears. TV STORY-Ep. 49: Maria... Her Love and Death
Affecting a happy disposition to mask his pain, Ryu decided to go and face Radiguet alone to get revenge for Rie. Holding the Vyram general in place, he intended a suicide attack with the Fire Bazooka, but Radiguet had grown more powerful and destroyed the weapon quickly. Red Hawk was being beaten until his teammates joined the battle to save him. With words of encouragement from Kaori, Ryu regained his composure, returning to act as the leader of his team. The five Jetmen succeeded in defeating Radiguet in the ground level fight. TV STORY-Ep. 50: Battles to the Death
During the final, giant level, battle, he fell off Jet Garuda when he urged Aya and his four teammates in the Jet Icarus to stab Radiguet in his weak point located in the back, while Ryu was using Jet Garuda to restrain the former, in which his helmet vanished followed by his suit.
With the Vyram thoroughly dealt with, Ryu married Kaori some time after the fall of Radiguet. The whole team, along with Commander Aya, attended the wedding. He saw a vision of Rie in the ceremony, approving of his marriage. TV STORY-Final Ep.: Flap Your Wings! Aviators!
He and Kaori later had a son. They named him "Gai", after their late teammate. TV STORY-Toei TV Hero Encyclopedia Vol. 2: Chojin Sentai Jetman
Imitations[]
A copy of Red Hawk was created as part of the Shadow Jetman. Light Armadillo created these evil Jetmen from their shadows, as they grew stronger, the real Jetmen grew weaker. Maria created a forcefield of light over the city at night to create daylight so the Shadow Jetman could destroy the city. There were only four, as Gai Yuki was not there when the copies were made. Gai shot Maria so the light field went away, the Shadow selves vanished and the Jetman defeated Light Armadillo. TV STORY-Ep. 25: The Laughing Shadow-People
Epilogue Manga[]
In the non-canon Epilogue Manga, Ryu is now a chief and at the beginning of the Manga, it is the first birthday of Kaori and his daughter Aya, who was named after the choukan. When Radiguet challenged Ryu and he went out of retirement, Ako and Raita at his side. Ryu was severely beaten by Radiguet. He witnessed Radiguet get his body back. The Neo Jetman were angry at Ryu on why he personally had to fight Radiguet and he told them that it was because Radiguet was after him. When Jeff came back to life thanks to Aya, Ryu had to zap Jeff and Radiguet to kill Radiguet. COMIC STORY- Chojin Sentai Jetman: Toki wo Kakete

Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai[]
Red Hawk is among the Sentai warriors seen in clips when Yusuke Amamiya (Red Falcon) lectured Gaku Washio (GaoYellow) about the past Sentai sword experts, showing him that the true sword wasn't the sharpest, but the one that feeds on courage.
Led by his Liveman predecessor Red Falcon, he appeared as one of 24 previous Red Rangers in Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai together with fellow Red Rangers from his predecessors Akarenger to FiveRed to his successors from TyrannoRanger to TimeRed. MOVIE STORY-Hyakuju Sentai Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai

Legend War[]
Years later, Ryu fought alongside not only his own team, but every single Sentai Ranger in existence, against the Empire of Zangyack when it attacked the Earth in the Great Legend War. After fighting against hundreds of Gormin and their Sugormin commanders, Akarenger noticed the fleet moving towards them. He gathered all the Rangers together and gave them the order to sacrifice their powers to wipe out the first invasion's armada. The Red Hawk powers are later used by Captain Marvelous via the Ranger Keys. TV STORY-Ep. 1: The Space Pirates Appear MOVIE STORY-Gokaiger Goseiger Super Sentai 199 Hero Great Battle
Farewell Space Pirates[]
After the Zangyack's final defeat, Marvelous returned the Ranger Keys to their original owners. Ryu and his teammates have their powers again. TV STORY-Final Ep.: Farewell Space Pirates
Akibaranger[]
In the first episode of Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger, when Mitsuki Aoyagi says that Nobuo Akagi is an old man after he reveals he's 29, Nobuo thinks of Ryu, along with Ippei Akagi (DenziRed) of Denshi Sentai Denziman, saying "What would the great Sentai Reds do at a time like this?" TV STORY-Ep. 1: Lameness is Power
A delusion of Red Hawk appeared during episode 6. He transformed into the Jetmen's Ludicrous Power, the Jet Winger and granted it to Nobuo Akagi. TV STORY-Ep. 6: Soar, Master! A Lame Trap at the Delusional Studio!
Red Hawk reappears leading his five-man team alongside the other two Ludicrous Sentai, Dekaranger and Boukenger, in Season Tsuu's alternate take on the events of the first season. The three official Sentai come to aid the Akibarangers in the final battle with the Stema Otsu Corporation. TV STORY-Ep. 1: Delusional War
The Jetmen later appeared with the now five official Sentai, transforming into their Ludicrous Power which combined with the others to form the Ludicrous Cannon Bazooka, which the Akibarangers used to destroy Kameari Alpaca. TV STORY-Ep. 10: Delusional Pillow Talk
Super Hero Taisen[]
Ryu, alongside his team, among the majority of the Super Sentai heroes, was caught up in the "Super Hero Taisen" incident which eventually resulted in the Super Sentai teams and Kamen Riders joining forces to defeat both Dai-Zangyack and Dai-Shocker. MOVIE STORY-Kamen Rider × Super Sentai: Super Hero Taisen
Super Hero Taisen Z[]
Red Hawk, with fellow Red heroes DenziRed and HurricaneRed, was part of a force of Sentai and Rider reinforcements led by Akarenger and Kamen Rider #1 that came to assist the Sentai and Riders of recent years who were overwhelmed by the revived monster army of the Space Crime Syndicate Madou. The combined forces of superheroes were able to turn the tide against the Madou army. They lined up and used their various finisher attacks to destroy the revived monsters.
After Demon King Psycho was destroyed and the battle was finally over, Red Hawk appeared standing on a cliff with all the other heroes who appeared to help, to say goodbye to the heroes of recent years before taking their leave. MOVIE STORY-Kamen Rider × Super Sentai × Space Sheriff: Super Hero Taisen Z
Zyuohger vs. Ninninger[]
Red Hawk appeared as part of a conference of the first 38 Reds led by Red Falcon, whom addressed the Ninningers and Zyuohgers as the greater Super Sentai pantheon intervened to save them from defeat at the hands of the titanic Gillmarda. Empowering the Combination Nin Shuriken to form Wild Tousai Shuriken King, the first 38 Super Sentai further imbued their successors with the power to perform the Zyuoh Ninnin Super Sentai Burst, destroying Gillmarda with the combined power of all 40 Super Sentai. Super Sentai Strongest Battle[]
Ryu joined the Super Sentai Strongest Battle as a member of Flying Team, where he won the first round fighting against MagiGreen of Refreshing Team. It’s unknown whether he participated in the second round, but his team was eliminated after losing the second round against the Swordsman Team.

Ryu alongside with his Sentai Red Ranger predecessors appeared to help the Zenkaigers. MOVIE STORY-Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger The Movie: Red Battle! All Sentai Rally!!
Saber + Zenkaiger: Superhero Senki[]
Though he was seemingly erased alongside his team as a result of Asmodeus’ manipulations, he and, presumably, his corresponding team were restored back into existence once Touma Kamiyama had helped Shotaro regained his passion in drawing out the superheroes that he wants to draw out.
During the climatic final battle itself, he can be seen fighting alongside Skyrider, Red Falcon and Zyuoh Eagle.
Personality[]
Being the only military officer to become a Jetman, his policy is to be always professional and never let feelings affect himself in battle. He expects his team to do the same, which proves easier said than done, as unlike himself, the others have not had any experience in the military. While fundamentally a nice person and capable leader who will come to his team's aid whenever they need it, Ryu's strict adherence to discipline causes discomfort among them when they are first formed. This comes to a conflict when he discovers that his beloved Rie has become Maria, which later causes Gai's inner sense of justice to awaken during the time he fantasizes he is still with Rie. TV STORY-Ep. 32: Wings!! One More Time From then on, Ryu starts to listen to his teammates more, rather than commands their unconditional respect.
Ryu does not drink alcohol, as he loves hot milk without sugar. He does do so on a few occasions with his former rival turned best friend Gai. TV STORY-Ep. 45: The Hot Milk of Victory
Despite his rational, straight - laced, if often rigid, demeanor as a leader, Ryu's feelings for Rie can make him vulnerable and prone to making unsound decisions. In fact, upon learning that Rie is still alive as Maria, he becomes unresponsive and delusional to the point of imagining his girlfriend everywhere with him, effectively abandoning the Jetmen. Also, despite being willing to sacrifice himself in the final battle against Radiguet to get revenge for Rie, Ryu does so without informing his team beforehand. The scheme fails and almost gets him killed if not for the others' interference. Fortunately he survives to continue redeeming his past mistakes by returning for future battles. TV STORY-Ep. 50: Battles to the Death
Ironically, it is these vulnerable moments that make Gai see him in a new light, as someone with flaws and a personality beyond that of an one note "goody-two-shoes" leader. Thus ends their bitter rivalry and begins a long lasting friendship.
He keeps a picture of Rie sticked to the underside of his Corresponder as a memento.
He marries his fellow Jetman, who has supported him in difficult times - Kaori - in the series finale. TV STORY-Final Ep.: Flap Your Wings! Aviators! He is often seen wearing Red Gold's Gym gloves.

Etymology[]
- “Ryu” (竜) means “dragon” in Japanese, despite his Ranger identity being hawk-themed; though this can potentially be forgiven, since dragons are also flying creatures.
The “Ten” in his surname means “sky/heaven” (天)”, so when written with a different second kanji, “Tendo” can mean "Way of Heaven" (天道), which also happens to be the name of a religion in Japan.

The Red Hawk Ranger Key (レッドホークレンジャーキー Reddo Hōku Renjā Kī) is Ryu Tendo's personal Ranger Key and what became of his powers after he along with the rest of the 34 Super Sentai sacrificed their powers to end the Great Legend War.
This key along with the majority of the Ranger Keys were collected by the Red Pirates and later used by the Gokaigers. The Red Hawk Ranger Key was mainly used by Captain Marvelous (Gokai Red), who used it to fight as Red Hawk. It was also used by Gai Ikari (Gokai Silver) on one occasion.

The Jetman Keys, along with all the Ranger Keys of the first 33 Super Sentai, were briefly taken by the Black Cross King and turned into Ranger puppets that were fought by the Gokaigers and the Goseigers. Using their power of flight to disorient the two Sentai in the initial skirmish, they later split up, with the puppet Red Hawk being defeated as part of a group of surviving Red warrior keys by Gokai Red and Super Gosei Red. MOVIE STORY-Gokaiger Goseiger Super Sentai 199 Hero Great Battle
After Zangyack were finally defeated, the Gokaigers gave the Ranger Keys back to their rightful owners. Ryu received his key and became Red Hawk once more. TV STORY-Final Ep.: Farewell Space Pirates
Usage[]
The Legend Sentai Ressha (レジェンド戦隊レッシャー Rejendo Sentai Ressha) are Ressha based on the Mecha, specifically those belonging to the Red heroes, of the ToQgers' preceding Super Sentai teams. They can form a unique combination of ToQ-Oh reminiscent of past Sentai Robos by switching with Red Ressha. The ToQ Changer toy is shown to have sounds for Legend Ressha of all 37 previous Sentai.
The Jetman Ressha (ジェットマンレッシャー Jettoman Ressha) appears as an SG Ressha.

Notes[]
- Ryu is the only Sentai Ranger to appear in Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger to have not appeared in Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger.
- However, he is also the only Sentai Ranger to appear in Akibaranger without his actor reprising his role.
- At the 2013 San Diego Comic Con, Red Hawk, along with Black Condor, were seen as SH Figuarts with other Power Rangers figures.
- In the Philippine dub of the series, Ryu is voiced by Bernie Malejana, who previously voiced Gaku Hoshikawa from Chikyu Sentai Fiveman.
- In the Philippine dub, his Sentai form as Red Hawk was renamed into JetRed and his name was changed to Carl Greene.
- While Ryu is based on Ken Washio of Gatchaman, he is the only member of his team whose respective bird does not match his counterpart, as Ken has an Eagle motif.
- Additionally, Ryu shares his name with Ryu the Owl, Raita's counterpart in Gatchaman.
