Dynaman[]
Becoming a Dynaman[]
Knowing that some people are abducted by some henchmen in black, Ryu fights alongside other four people with the same goal. In the process, he introduces himself and does some ninja art on the henchmen. Later the henchmen reveal themselves as Tail Soldiers, while a mysterious creature who adresses himself as Crab Evo makes his presence known. Ryu and the others do not have much power to fight them and get thrown under a cliff.
Ryu somehow manages to safely go to Yumeno Invention Center, though he mistakenly gets attacked for sneaking onto the place. The other three are also make it to Yumeno Invention Center to also fulfill a request about each one's invention. The five are greeted by Kendo Robo, which makes Ryu frightened by its look. They are later greeted by Kyutaro Yumeno with his sweet potato-powered train. Dr. Yumeno then takes them to the underground base called Dyna Station. They are explained about Tailed-People Clan Jashinka Empire before being given each one a Dyna Brace. They change into Dynamen (with Ryu as DynaBlack) and take on DyJupiter as ordered by Dr. Yumeno.
At DyJupiter, DynaRed orders DynaBlack to launch Dyna Missiles into the Jashinka base and Gizmosquitos. Later, the Dynamen greet Prince Megiddo and his army. The two sides have a fight. After the Dynamen finish the Tail Soldiers and DynaRed slashes one of Prince Megiddo's tail, they finish Crab Evo with Super Dynamite.
As Crab Evo enlarge into Super Crab Evo, the Dynamen utilize vehicles stored in DyJupiter (with DynaBlack riding Dyna Mobile alongside DynaBlue) and combine into Kagaku Gattai Dyna Robo for the first time. Eventually, Dyna Robo destroy the Evolution Beast for good.

Pursuing His Dream[]
While the Dynamen are fighting Rhino Evo on a volcano, Prince Megiddo interrupts the fight to seek revenge to DynaRed for slashing his tail before. Dyna with the other Dynamen are wiliing to aid DynaRed, only to fight the prince's bodyguards, Gira and Keel. Their fight is then halted by an erruption on the volcano.
In Yumeno Invention Center, Ryu introduces himself to the children there and explains about his dream to contact and befriend alien lifeforms using a telescope he is researching. Later on a training, Ryu is seen having a backflip training before helping Hokuto with the latter's double sword training.
Later in the revenge fight against Prince Megiddo, after blinding some tailed soldiers with Black Star Flash, DynaBlack fights Gira and Keel and overwhelm them with his clone art.

He gathered all the Rangers together and gave them the order to sacrifice their powers to wipe out the first invasion's armada. The DynaBlack powers are later used by Don Dogoier via the Ranger Keys.

- Ryu Hoshikawa is portrayed by Junichi Haruta (春田 純一 Haruta Jun'ichi), who previously played Kanpei Kuroda/GoggleBlack. Haruta did most of his own stunts as DynaBlack, with Tsutomu Kitagawa (喜多川 務 Kitagawa Tsutomu) serving as an understudy.
- In the parody of Dynaman, he is voiced by Bill Johnston.
Design[]
- DynaBlack has a spandex suit, with a white main body seen in the legs with a red inner stripe and two black outer stripes along the sides, with the torso covered by a black "short-sleeved" shirt with a red stripe down the middle and along the cuffs, similar to the appearance of a baseball jersey. Both his gloves and boots are black in color; while a holster on the right side where he holds his DynaRod and a pin on his left torso with the Dynaman logo on it. His belt surrounds his waist with a buckle in the shape of the DynaBrace. His helmet is black, with a black visor that rises up in the middle appearing like glasses and a gray mouthpiece. The top of the helmet has a silver stripe rising up triangularly with a yellow logo inside: the top with a "II" symbol (the Roman Numeral "2") and the letters "DB" (which stands for "DynaBlack"). The logo and the visor are separated by a raised silver "lid" similar to a baseball cap.
Etymology[]
- The given name, ryu (竜) means "dragon".
- The surname, hoshikawa (星川) consists of these meanings: hoshi (星) means "star", meanwhile kawa (川) means "river". When combined, it literally means "starry river".

The DynaBlack Ranger Key (ダイナブラックレンジャーキー Daina Burakku Renjā Kī) is Ryu Hoshikawa's personal Ranger Key and what became of his powers after he along with the rest of the 34 Super Sentai sacrificed their powers to end the Great Legend War.
This key along with the majority of the Ranger Keys were collected by the Red Pirates and later used by the Gokaigers. The DynaBlack Ranger Key was mainly used by Don Dogoier (Gokai Green), who used it to fight as DynaBlack.

The Dynaman Keys, along with all the Ranger Keys of the first 33 Super Sentai, were briefly taken by the Black Cross King and turned into Ranger puppets that were fought by the Gokaigers and the Goseigers. The Dynaman keys were defeated by Gokai Red.

After Zangyack were finally defeated, the Gokaigers gave the Ranger Keys back to their rightful owners. Ryu received his key and became DynaBlack once more.
