Retooling is a form of repurposing used in television production and toy production that involves modifying an existing design (and not simply recoloring it as in redeco) to create new concepts or characters. Most of the mecha introduced in movies are are retools of an existing mecha. This is usually either the main combined robot or the red ranger's mecha.

Hyakuju Sentai Gaoranger[]
- GaoGod is a retool of Hyakujuu Gattai GaoKing, The most notable differences are the added saw to the shark and its head, of which the horns can turn into a bow and arrow.
- GaoKong is a retool of GaoGorilla. Apart from its color, its only difference is the knight like visor on the head of the combined form.
Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger[]
- BakurenOh is a retool of Bakuryuu Gattai AbarenOh. Its differences are a larger shield, added frills and a different head sculpt for the combined robot. It also lacks a counterpart to the pteranodon.
Mahou Sentai Magiranger[]
- Horned Sacred Horse Unigolon is a retool of Dark Magic Horse Barikion. Its main difference is the horn added to its horse mode. The robot mode is sculpted to look more regal, compared to FireKaiser.
Engine Sentai Go-Onger[]
- Engine Dai-Shogun is a retool of Engine Gattai Engine-O. It features added details to make it resemble a samurai.
Tensou Sentai Goseiger[]
- Gosei Wonder is a retool of Gosei Dragon, featuring a bird's head and tail, as opposed to a dragon's, while sporting a knight like visor in combined mode.

Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger[]
- Zyudenryu Tobaspino is a retool of Zyudenryu Gabutyra, featuring a different head and an added fin. The head of the combined robot resembles a samurai helmet.
- Power Rangers Dino Force Brave, a sequel to Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger utilizes a number of retools.
- Brave TyrannoKing is a retool of Kamitsuki Gattai Kyoryuzin: Cannontyra is a retool of Zyudenryu Gabutyra with added gattling gun. Forkkera is a retool of Zyudenryu Dricera with added shovel. Stegotoup is a retool of Zyudenryu Stegotchi with added chainsaw.
- Parasaizer is a redeco of Zyudenryu Parasagun with a cannon added to its mouth. Raptorax is a retool of Zyudenryu Zakutor which replaces the splitting claw tail for a battle ax.
Ressha Sentai ToQger[]
- Ressha Gattai SafariGaOh is a retool of Ressha Gattai ToQ-Oh, with added parts to make the trains resemble animals. It also has the ability to combine into a lion, which the original toy lacked.
Shuriken Sentai Ninninger[]
- OtomoNin Dinomaru is a heavy retool of OtomoNin Paonmaru, sharing many of the same parts and transformation sequence.
Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger[]
- Cube Condor is a retool of Cube Gorilla, with its face replaced by an image of a condor.
Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger[]
- The Hammer Dial Fighter is a retool of the Blade Dial Fighter with added ends of a gavel.
Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger[]
- Gaisoulg's Gaisoul Ken is a purple and silver retool of the Ryusoul Ken with the back of its blade being much more jagged.
- The Ryusoul Calibur is a white and gold retool of the Ryusoul Ken with a beak added to the dinosaur head.
Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger[]
- Stacaesar's Geartozinger is a purple retool of the Geartlinger, which is instead made to resemble Gege.
Avataro Sentai Donbrothers[]
- Don Murasame's Ninjarksword is a pink and cyan retool of the Zanglassword with the gear in sharks and a jagged blade.
Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger[]
- Ohkuwagata Ohger's OhgerCalibur ZERO is a golden retool of the OhgerCalibur with four of the switches removed.

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger[]
- During the South Korean run of the show, named Power Rangers Animal Force, several of the Cube Animals were retooled to resemble other animals. An example is Cube Brachio, which is a retool of Cube Whale, with its water spout being replaced by the long neck of a brachiosaurus.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers[]
- Rita Repulsa's costume was retooled for the live stage shows, with purple coloring and a redesigned breastplate.
- Grumble the Elf from Storybook Rangers is a retool of Mr. Ticklesneezer, dressing him in a Santa outfit and facial hair.
- Snow Monster from the same episode, is a retool of Primator, with an added mane and mustache.
- Turkey Jerk from the same episode is a retool of Chunky Chicken.
- Repellator from A Friend in Need is a slight retool of Silver Horns, with an added tongue.
Power Rangers Turbo[]
- During Divatox' boot camp sequence of Fire in Your Tank, several monster costumes of past series can be seen in the background. Most of these are retooled by having been recolored, along with parts added or removed.
Power Rangers S.P.D.[]
- A-Squad Rangers helmets are retooled Space Rangers helmets, with added vents on top.
- Time Force Red's costume was mildly retooled for Officer Tate's Ranger costume with minor additions.
- Anubis Cruger can be viewed as a retool of Doggie Kruger, with a more reptilian take on the original design.
Power Rangers Mystic Force[]
- The Fierce Dragon Morpher is a retool of the Solar Cell Morpher with an added dragon head blade.
Power Rangers Jungle Fury[]
- Mele's breast armor was retooled for Camille, as the chameleon eye breasts were considered risque for American kids' TV.
Power Rangers (Super) Ninja Steel[]
- Cosmo Royale is a retool of Baron Nero from Ressha Sentai ToQger with a new head.
Power Rangers Beast Morphers[]
- The Beast-X King Activator is a retool of the Beast-X Morpher, as it has a new design with a lion head on the key part.
Power Rangers Cosmic Fury[]
- Fern's Orange Ranger helmet is a retooling of Amelia's Red Ranger helmet, with minor changes to denote a different dinosaur.
Toys only[]
Power Rangers in Space[]
- The Deluxe Titanus from the 1993 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers toyline was retooled into Silver Titanus Carrierzord, The differences are that its dinosaur head is replaced with the cockpit of a space shuttle, while its tail is replaced with a large spoiler. The front of the figure also has a socket for Mega V3 from the Mega Voyager toy to plug in. The claws forming Titanus' front legs are removed from the toy entirely.
Power Rangers Ninja Storm[]
- The Deluxe Ninjor figure from the 1996 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers toyline was retooled into Ninjakon. The main differences are his chest emblem being replaced with the logo of the Wind Rangers and him having a different head sculpt.
Power Rangers Samurai[]
- A retooled version of the Transtek Armor was released as part of Samurai's Zordbuilder Toyline

is kitbashed by fitting the ZECTroopers' Machinegun Blade from Kamen Rider Kabuto over the barrel of KishiRyuNeptune ShadowRaptor's Kurayami Gun from Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger. - The Gigant Hammer is modified from Dyrandoh's Giant Hammer from Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger.
- The Gigant Sword is modified from ToQ-Oh's Railway Crossing Sword from Ressha Sentai ToQger.
