Power Rangers Super Megaforce is the 21st season of Power Rangers continuing the celebration of the series 20th anniversary and the second season of Power Rangers Megaforce. The series is based on Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, though some elements remain from Tensou Sentai Goseiger.

Production

"Power Rangers Megaforce" was trademarked by Saban Brands in 2011 during the run of Power Rangers Samurai. Casting sides released in April 2012 match with the blue and silver rangers of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. On 11th June 2012, it was revealed that the season will be based on Tensou Sentai Goseiger.[1] The official name was then revealed as "Power Rangers Megaforce". The second season, titled Super Megaforce, will incorporate elements from Gokaiger.[2][3][4][5] That makes Megaforce the first hybrid adaptation since Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

On June 17th, 2013 the official press release unveiled the plot of Power Rangers Super Megaforce:

Plot

"An alien armada has arrived and invaded our planet. Wave after wave have attacked us, with a ferocity never seen before. To battle this new threat the Power Rangers must master the abilities of the Legendary Rangers to become Super Megaforce"
―Narrator[src]

"Power Rangers Super Megaforce focuses on the Rangers' mission to defeat a massive alien army Armada that was sent to conquer Earth. To face this threat, Gosei, a supernatural guardian who has protected Earth for centuries, gives the Rangers special morphers and keys, which allow them to morph into Super Megaforce Rangers. The Rangers also have an added special ability to morph into either any team of Power Rangers from the past or different versions of the same ranger( For example, in one episode, they all morph into the Mystic Force, Operation Overdrive, Samurai, Wild Force, and Jungle Fury Red ranger and in another episode, three of them morph into the Auqitar, RPM, and Dino Thunder Black Ranger.) These super-sized adventures can only mean one thing: the all-new Power Rangers Super Megaforce has arrived!"[6]

Notes

  • This is the only anniversary season to feature a Green Ranger
  • There are several errors in the opening sequence. At the end before the logo appears, a montage of Ranger helmets appears. But some of them are wrong:
    • SPD Yellow and Blue are mirror flipped, so the police badge is the wrong way around.
    • SPD Red has holes on the mouthplate and on the black panel between the police badge and the visor. These are the breathing holes from the theme park version of the helmet.
    • RPM Yellow and Blue are mirror flipped, meaning that the G symbol is backwards.
  • This is the first season to incorporate Super Sentai ranger suits whose counterparts did not previously appear in Power Rangers- Dairanger (not counting how the sixth Dairanger's suit was used), Flashman, Maskman, Changeman, and Fiveman.
  • This is the only season to credit only the rangers in the opening titles, without any allies or villains.
  • This and Megaforce are the only seasons in the Neo-Saban era where the Rangers don't have a Power-Up to use exclusively on the Megazord as well uses the cockpit footage of the Sentai Series.
  • This is the only season in the Neo-Saban era to not have a holiday special.
  • This is the second series not to have a character on the villains’ side have a change of heart, reform, or side with the Power Rangers at all.
  • This is the first season since Power Rangers Ninja Storm to not have a clip show episode as well as the only season in the Neo-Saban era to not have one.
  • Similar to how Gokaiger had the roman numeral for 35 (XXXV) in their transformation sequence, this season has the roman numeral for 20 (XX) seen, referencing the 20th anniversary for Power Rangers.
  • This is the second season in which the pink ranger gets a submarine.
    • In a similar case, this is the third time the Blue ranger gets an aircraft-based Zord( S.P.D. and operation: Overdrive.)
