This article is about a/an series entry (the "30th") in the Power Rangers franchise. |
Power Rangers Cosmic Fury is an American superhero drama serving as an adaptation of the 41st Super Sentai series Uchu Sentai Kyuranger[note 1], and is the 30th installment of the Power Rangers franchise. The series is Hasbro's third production following their acquisition of the franchise and is currently the final season to be set within the mainstream continuity established since Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. An upcoming reboot series had been in development since 2020.[2][3][4]
The series also commemorates the franchise's 30th anniversary as it picks up directly following the end of the final episode of Dino Fury. In the series, the Morphin Masters have tasked the Rangers with re-capturing Lord Zedd and fighting his new forces throughout outer space.
Production[]
Development[]
Executive producer Simon Bennett pitched an idea for a potential future third season utilizing Zord footage from Uchu Sentai Kyuranger.[5][6] After the success of Dino Fury, development on a thirtieth season of Power Rangers was green-lit as early as May 2021, with the cast and crew of Dino Fury having already signed on to star.[7] In February 2022, casting sides for the season were released.[8]
The series was originally titled to simply be a third season of Dino Fury, but was changed to its own unique season titled Cosmic Fury for marketing purposes.[9] In June 2022, the new title was leaked to the public, though it was initially believed to have been a placeholder title, subjected to change.[10]
Netflix was initially open to a 20-episode season for Cosmic Fury. However, it was ultimately decided by the Hasbro executives to limit the series to just 10 episodes. The shorter season resulted in the Izzy and Fern relationship storyline being more condensed than what was originally intended. [11] Furthermore, Bennett confirmed that Cosmic Fury would be release worldwide simultaneously, eliminating any potential spoilers that come from early international airings in previous years.
Pre-production[]
On August 27, 2022, Hasbro hosted an Hasbro Pulse and showed a video of Simon Bennett on the set of Cosmic Fury, revealing his returning involvement from Dino Fury as executive producer, as well as the six main Rangers.[12] According to Bennett, Dino Fury was intended to end at the second season, but due to the positive reception with the series, Hasbro made the executive decision to continue with a third season.[13]
On September 30, 2022, Hasbro Pulse held a panel featuring Bennett and the Cosmic Fury Ranger cast. Bennett confirmed that the show would only adapt the Zord footage from Uchu Sentai Kyuranger, while Ranger suits, some villains, and on-ground fights will be entirely original.[14] A feat not attempted since the Zordon Era, however, in a first for Cosmic Fury, all footage is filmed in New Zealand with no carryover in the vein of Zyu2.
With the revealing of the later many fans expressed their disappointment with Hasbro's decision to not utilize the Kyuranger suits, with the Cosmic Fury suits also receiving negative feedback as well. [15]
Bennett stated a concerning difficulty of developing stories for 12 individual Rangers,[16] which was ultimately mitigated by using original suits instead [17], logistically reducing the amount of location scouting need to accurately match Sentai footage, which often times the results were not perfect. [18]This idea came about with Hasbro's recent capabilities of being able to film more original footage, allowing for more original storytelling and resulting in less Sentai footage being used per episode. [19] Furthermore, Bennett stated that earlier original suit design drafts had much more detail and texture until they were removed on the request of Hasbro for the sake of easy toy replication. [20]
Filming[]
Filming began October 27, 2022 in New Zealand.[21][22] Filming was done in 6K resolution using RED V Raptor Cameras.[23]
It was revealed behind-the-scenes that Ryan Carter would reprise his role as Heckyl from Power Rangers Dino Super Charge and debut as the Dino Charge Dark Ranger, marking the first adaptation of Deathryuger from Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger: Gaburincho of Music in the live-action Power Rangers continuity. Bennett stated that the rights to the suit as well as the film's footage were not previously available during the production of Dino Super Charge.
However, the helmet supplied by Toei is actually of Kyoryu Navy's instead as the streak on the edges of the visor is gray, not red. Bennett stated that this was the helmet Toei had supplied along with the suit, with no reason given as to why the helmet was sourced from a different Ranger.[24] A recolor was considered but heavily disallowed by Toei.[25]
The season features many old monster suits from various Super Sentai seasons. This came to be from Toei clearing out the storage in their warehouses and offering them to the team, who needed many suits for the monster armies.[26]
Filming wrapped before December 25, 2022.[27]
Post Production[]
On May 29, 2023, several voice actors were announced to have been cast as villains.
Andrew Laing, who had voiced Lord Zedd in Power Rangers Dino Fury, was expected to reprise his role for Power Rangers Cosmic Fury. However, due to online harassment from fans who criticized his performance for being lackluster in comparison to the late Robert Axelrod, Zedd's original voice actor from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Laing had stepped down from the role and was replaced by Fred Tatasciore for Cosmic Fury onwards.
By early June, ADR work had been completed.[28][29] By late July, post-production had wrapped.[30]
On August 17, 2023, David Yost was revealed to be reprising his role as Billy Cranston.
On December 28, 2023, Super Sentai and Toei Company executive Shin-ichiro Shirakura had visited the set of Cosmic Fury.[31]
Marketing[]
On September 30, 2022, Hasbro Pulse revealed concept art for the Cosmic Fury Ranger suits, particularly the Green and Gold Rangers.[32] In October, concept art for the Cosmic Fury Blue Ranger was revealed.[33] On January 17, 2023, concept art for the remaining Rangers, particularly Black, Zenith, and Red were revealed.[34] On the same day, a video was released featuring the main cast in their suits, with Amelia being marketed as the first mainstay female Red Ranger.[35]
On May 24, 2023, Bennett revealed a display of the Rangers' weapons.[36] On May 30, 2023, he revealed a first look at the Cosmic Morpher.[37]
On August 17, 2023, the opening sequence was released, revealing a September 29th release date for the show. On August 28, 2023, the 30th anniversary of the franchise, a preview clip of the first episode was released.[38] On September 18, 2023, the Cosmic Fury Red Ranger was teased, revealed three days later to be playable for the mobile game Power Rangers Legacy Wars.[39][40] During an Hasbro Pulse stream on September 22, 2023, a second preview clip was released.
Hasbro felt there was a flaw in the "toy design". [41][42] However, no toys other than the DX Cosmic Morpher, Zenith Ranger Playset, and the Cosmic Fury Zord pack have been released with Hasbro confirming a hiatus in toy production for the foreseeable future. [43]

Release[]

Toyline[]
- to be added
Errors[]
- The Black Ranger is erroneously mirrored on the poster.
- The Kyurangers are erroneously visible in several Megazord cockpit scenes.
Notes[]
- This Power Rangers Season has multiple notable firsts. Cosmic Fury is:
- The first direct-to-streaming series in the franchise, with all ten episodes released on Netflix the same day.
- The first Power Rangers series with an official Orange Ranger.
- The first to not have a Pink and/or Yellow Ranger with each predecessor having at least one of the two.
- To have two queer Power Rangers in the main TV series.[note 2]
- Although not the first, Cosmic Fury can be considered the first season to have a leading woman as a Red Ranger.
- This is the second season overall to have only 10 episodes, with the first being Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers.
- Cosmic Fury marked the franchise's final installment filmed in New Zealand, with the upcoming reboot now moving production to a new undisclosed location. [56]
- Due to the short length of the series, several Voyagers from Kyuranger were not used in Cosmic Fury. These voyagers include the Houou Voyager, Orion Voyager, Kojishi Voyager, and the Cerberus Voyager.
- Several Ranger colors from Kyuranger do not have direct counterparts in Cosmic Fury. They include Hebitsukai Silver, Washi Pink, Kajiki Yellow, Ryu Commander, Koguma Skyblue, and Houou Soldier.
- Although this is the “final” season of the main TV show, it was left open-ended.

Footnotes[]
- ↑ Although the series is an "adaptation", it does not utilize any Super Sentai footage except for Zord sequences from Kyuranger, from where the Zords for Cosmic Fury are adapted from. On-ground fights are filmed using original Ranger suits inspired by Ryusoulger and monsters consisting of both PR-exclusive villains and ones from Kyuranger, Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger, and Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger.
- ↑ Although not the first in the franchise.
