Naniwhatever Anyway, A Scramble Intersection Robo!? (浪速ともあれスクランブル交差ロボ!? Naniwa Tomoare Sukuranburu Kōsa Robo!?) is the fortieth episode of Gekisou Sentai Carranger. It features a peculiar event in Super Sentai history involving the first "switching" of mecha parts, leading to the creation of the Scramble Intersection Robo using parts of both RV Robo and VRV; this will further be formalized with the later introduction of Auxiliary Mecha within the franchise and the greater usage of alternate mecha combinations.

Synopsis[]

Minoru befriends a traitorous Gorotsuki and shows him the ways of Osaka, unknowing of the true nature of the Bowzock's plans against the Carranger.

Plot[]

In the city, Zelmoda is working with the Bowzock on a construction project excavating something as he yells at the workers as they set up explosives and state they're doing alright and he tells them to keep going. Zelmoda wonders why they're doing this and blames Exhaus; while in space, the overlord confirms the status of the project with Gynamo who states it's going well and Zelmoda confirms. Exhaus states he provided the idea, money and materials for the plan and if done right, it will defeat the Carranger. Zonnette rushes in complaining that Exhaus keeps bossing them around but wonders who he really is; Gynamo tells her to wait and see as they'll defeat the Carranger this time as the overlord puts his trust in them.

At Pegasus Garage, Kyosuke greets the others and wonders where Minoru is; Natsumi states he went to a shrine as Youko adds he said something about "praying for victory"; Naoki wonders if it has to do with dealing with Exhaus as Kyosuke states he's praying for Carranger's victory. However Minoru, dressed in the apparel of the Hanshin Tigers (the baseball team of Osaka), prays to God about how the Tigers didn't do well that season and states it has to do with not praying enough for them and they're regretting this, stating that they should win next season and wonders how many times he has to visit to get it. But he's alerted when Dappu gets the Bowzock alarm, forcing him to stop his prayers and tell the shrine he'll be back.

Elsewhere, a purple bat-like Gorotsuki is on the run before tripping where he's found by the Carranger; they accuse him of doing something bad but the Gorotsuki states he's happy they're there and tells them to save him as Zelmoda tells them to "hand him over", confusing Minoru as he states the Gorotsuki betrayed them and escaped, which by Bowzock law leads to death! Zelmoda states the Gorotsuki would be bad for revealing their secret and sends the Wumpers after the Carranger, who fight them off. The Wumpers bind Green Racer down before the Gorotsuki kicks them away, leading to Zelmoda to decide to execute him there and then; Minoru comforts the creature and kicks Zelmoda away and accuses him of killing a member who wants to go straight as he shoots the Navic Blaster forcing the Bowzock general to retreat. The Gorotsuki shows pain as Minoru discovers a wound on him, covering it in a handkerchief stating it would hurt as the creature thanks him and Green Racer states he should be thanking it. Sensing he's hungry, Minoru offers to take him to takoyaki, treating him as the creature devours a container as the team watches, thanking the team and calling it good as Minoru states it's an Osaka-style takoyaki which is rare in Tokyo, stating they're the best for takoyaki which the creature appreciates as well. Minoru wonders if he's just saying it but the creature compliments Green Racer's headband for the Hanshin Tigers, stating it's the best and he states hes' impressed as Minoru gives it to him, stating he feels they're going to be friends forever before offering two more boxes of Osaka takoyaki; as he leaves Youko apologizes for Minoru being a "purebred Kansai Man" but the Gorotsuki states that it's fine while Minoru states this is just "Naniwa Hospitality". The Gorotsuki states he wants to offer something as thanks for the takoyaki stating that the Bowzock are planning something terrifying.

At Carranger base, Dappu reasons that to turn Earth into a firework, Exhaus is building a secret underground base, one that the team realizes they have to act on before it's too late! Natsumi wonders if the Gorotsuki should be trusted but Dappu states he shouldn't, reasoning that the Bowzock alarm shouldn't react to a reformed Bowzock; but Kyosuke states it's not right to be suspicious of him from the start either. The alien wonders where the Gorotsuki is, revealing he's with Minoru as they embracing the Hanshin Tigers life, the creature loving the tea he's drinking particularly in the team cup. Green Racer states he's flattering and his Osaka accent is very good, making kitsune udon he offers as the Gorotsuki prepares to eat it, Minoru stating Kansai-style kitsune udon is the best and it will warm him up. The Gorotsuki slurps it down stating Osaka sounds amazing being so welcoming and great to enjoy. Minoru gets a message from Kyosuke suddenly to talk with him; the Gorotsuki tells him to not mind him and go to it while Green Racer tells him to take his time with the food.

At the base, Minoru is confronted by the idea that the Gorotsuki is lying; Dappu asks what he thinks but he states he's a real good guy and they'll be seeing a Tigers game next year. Dappu wonders why the Gorotsuki would reveal a secret so easily despite the danger, making Minoru wonder the truth as he tells the alien he wants to trust him and thinking if the others won't trust the Gorotsuki, he'll find the Bowzock secret base himself, rushing off at the team's concern. Kyosuke and the others chase Minoru believing they all should trust in the Gorotsuki shocking the alien as the team catches up with Green Racer, stating they're a team leading to the idea that they all want to trust in Minoru's new friend, making Green Racer elated as the team transforms and thinking that he can't betray them as they rush off in their VRV Machines.

At Minoru's apartment, the Gorotsuki is contacted by Zelmoda by cell phone, telling him it's "time for the next step", the creature ripping off the handkerchief and headband and his eyes turning red as he steps on Minoru's gift uncaringly. In the city, VRV Robo searches around for the Bowzock secret base, but a remote is set off causing massive explosions that blow up around the mecha and a giant crucifix to rise up and bind them in chains, preventing them from moving! Zelmoda states they fell for their trap as the Gorotsuki states Green Racer was easy to trick, shocking him as the Gorotsuki eats an Imocho imo youkan to grow giant to defeat them, shocking Minoru on the turn of events.

As VRV Robo struggles, the Gorotsuki states he's going to enjoy torturing them as he slashes them and Minoru apologizes in his stupidity in trusting him. At base, Dappu tells Minoru there's no point in regretting trusting someone and it's more important to get through the situation, which is easier said than done. Pulling out a giant mallet/drill weapon, the Gorotsuki smashes VRV Robo wearing the mecha down to the point that Dappu summons the Ranger Vehicles to help them out! Kyosuke decides the team need to use RV Robo to fight back, switching mecha for combat and forcing the Gorotsuki to confront the new threat, Kyosuke stating that RV Robo is their friend which is why it took so much time to repair and bring back into combat. The Gorotsuki hits it and strangles it's neck, pushing the mecha until the team put the brake on movement, then Green Racer summons the RV Naniwa Kick to hit the enemy but it catches it and throws the team into rocks, knocking it down and crushing Green and Yellow Vehicles, preventing movement! Activating the drill end, the Gorotsuki tries to rip the mecha apart with Kyosuke making RV Robo dodge at the last second making Youko contemplate they can't win if they get it by it and having her catch it with RV Robo's hands, baring it until she can't anymore wrecking Pink Vehicle and making the Gorotsuki rip into the chest making the team wonder what they can do!

The Gorotsuki tells them to give up as Minoru feels angered by being naive in trusting the creature and states he didn't understand Osaka-style takoyaki or the kitsune udon; that being a Bowzock prevented him from understanding human kindness! The Gorotsuki changes faces and appears to regain consciousness, but Zelmoda yells at him stating that if he fails, Exhaus will rip him apart, making him worry and reactivate the drill to begin the attack again to "rip them apart". Realizing the words, Minoru decides to "rip themselves apart" as well, breaking their mecha and fighting in their own machines, telling them to follow his plan. Naoki returns to Blue Vehicle and stops the attack with Plugnado Spark as Kyosuke returns to Red Vehicle and the two break apart, while Minoru, Natsumi and Youko return to V-Dump, V-Dozer and V-Rescue respectively and escape from captivity. Minoru then proposes a fusion, shocking the others as the elements of RV Robo and VRV Robo will be mixed up, but Kyosuke states they're already in fusion mode and Naoki states they can't stop it! Minoru states they have no choice and activates "Super Emergency Fusion", making the others wonder if this can even be possible. Without warning, Red and Blue Vehicle fuse as V-Dozer and V-Dump become legs and V-Rescue the arms, which Green Racer states is the "Invincible Naniwa Robo Special" (which the others call Green Racer out for making up without permission!) Zelmoda and the Gorotsuki are shocked as Minoru states he will defeat it by his own hands, summoning RV Sword slicing it's weapon, then Victory Twister, which it tries to stop with a fire attack but Green Racer is charged to the point of destroying his supposed ally, even with regret.

Later, Minoru looks over his Hanshin Tiger headband as the others approach, stating he's not depressed at all but believes there are still good guys in the Bowzock, putting the bandana back on his head and singing the Tigers' cheer as the others look on, bringing himself to tears.

  • "Naniwa" in the title refers to the old name of the city of Osaka, which, as revealed in this episode, is connected to Minoru's heritage. Many aspects of Osaka are mentioned in this episode, including takoyaki (which was invented in the city), kitsune udon, and the Hanshin Tigers.
    • Minoru mentions a difference between "Tokyo" and "Osaka" takoyaki; the difference is Osaka-style tends to use a dashi (kelp) broth in the batter and the green parts of the scallion onions; while Tokyo-style tends to have the white part of the scallion and use cabbage as well.
  • Scramble Intersection Robo is the first time that mechs were mixed and matched by a Sentai team; this would become more commonplace in Sentai with the introduction of auxiliary mecha, particularly in Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger.
  • This episode is the last episode in which the TV Asahi logo from 1977 would be used; the next episode would feature a new logo which would be used until Episode 32 of Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger.
