This article is about a/an series of events in the Power Rangers comic sub-franchise by Boom! Studios. |
The Morphin Trials are a series of tests at Ranger Academy that determine if the school’s attending cadets have what it takes to become the next generation of Power Rangers. The Trials are made to test their teamwork, strength, skill and ability to rise to the challenge.
The Trials are divided up throughout the school term of a cadet.
Trial One[]
At the later end of the freshman year, First Year Cadets are placed in a trial by fire by being dropped off from an Astro Shuttle onto the surface of Chromia, a moon with a hostile environment. They must reach a Zeo Chamber on the mountain Prism Peak and must do so within a time limit before the chamber doors close. Upon arrival and entering the chamber, they collect Spectracite, a mineral crystal sensitive to the Morphin Grid and engage in a ceremony with Bandorain monks. They must stand before the monks, raise their morpher with Spectracite in hand and try to connect to the Grid. If they succeed, they morph into a Ranger and their Power Coin changes to reflect which color of the Grid spectrum they are connected to. Passing the first trial earns cadets the rank of Junior Ranger and they are able to advance to Second Year cadets after their freshman year ends.
The First Year cadets must study during the school year to prepare for this trial, including survival training, fitness exercises, the ability identify poisons and toxic chemicals, and a variety of subjects to better survive the harsh environment of Chromia and understand their mission.
The First Trial is failed by one of three conditions:
- The cadet is injured or incapacitated in a way that prevents them from continuing their journey, disqualifying them. This then requires a teammate to send up a distress flare to the Astro Shuttle in orbit for a rescue lift and they will be taken to the Academy infirmary upon their classmates completing or failing their trials.
- The Zeo Chamber closes. The doors only open once a year and usually cadets are dropped off early enough to start making the traversal to Prism Peak. However, getting there is entirely dependent on what route the cadets take and how wisely they manage their time, including avoiding hazards and maneuvering around the terrain. If the cadets fool around or get stuck, this diminishes their time and eventually the doors close.
- The cadet fails to morph.
Failure of this trial will result in the cadets being held back a year and not receiving the rank of Junior Ranger. The cadets must take Trial Remedial Classes until the Zeo Chamber opens again a year later, allowing them to redo the Trial and hopefully morph into a Ranger. The cadets seemingly have no limit to how many attempts they can make to pass the Trial and achieve their morph, but they also have the option to quit and drop out of the Academy.
