"Alpha. Adjust the Morphin Grid and locate Jason on the Viewing Globe"
Zordon and the very first mention of the Morphin Grid ever.[src]

"(Nate): If my calculations are correct, we will have access to the most powerful energy source in the known universe!
(Mayor Daniels): That's exactly what I'm afraid of.
(Commander Shaw): It seems that the mayor thinks what we're doing is a mistake.
(Mayor Daniels): A HUGE mistake! Since before you were born, every monster out there in every dimension from Rita Repulsa to Sledge and Galvanax. They all wanted to take the Rangers' power and rule the universe. And now that you've wrapped it up with a little ribbon, some evil mind will try to take it again. And when they come. this...place? Grid Battleforce? It won't be able to stop them."
Mayor Daniel's misgivings about Morph-X due to the history of villains wanting ultimate power.[src]

OO damaged morphing grid

The Morphing Grid damaged.

The Morphin Grid is a multiversal energy field for all Power Rangers regardless of whether they are alien or human. It was first mentioned in the fourth episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and then assumed and proven to give power to all Rangers and each team of Rangers has a specific link to the Grid. Rangers use their Morphers to create entries into the Grid and the powers are instantaneously entered into their cellular makeup when finished morphing.

Nature

Billy Cranston mentioned a neutrino power grid molecular whilst working in the Command Center to locate Rita Repulsa's time-warp shuttle. However, it's likely this wasn't that same thing given their different purposes Tvicon TV STORY-High Five

The first actual mention of the Morphin Grid by name was by Zordon first mentioned that a part of some one-off technobabble when he re-calibrated it to locate Jason Lee Scott on the Viewing Globe when he had to fight a lone battle against King Sphinx. In retrospect however, this is a really strange thing to say since it's a power source and not a system in the Command Center. Tvicon TV STORY-A Pressing Engagement

It was mentioned by Lord Zedd that the Grid is maintained by a balance between major forces of good and evil (i.e. Zordon and Zedd in that time period). Although it is unclear if this is accurate of just Zedd being flowery for the sake of showing off to Goldar, he clearly demonstrated some form of awareness to the good and evil balance. Tvicon TV STORY-White Light

Doctor K explained that she discovered a Bio-Field of electrical energy from which she draws power for the Ranger Operators and their gear and Zords. Though never identified as such, most likely due to lack of detailed knowledge of the Grid as it exists, it is implied and assumed the Bio-Field is meant to be the Morphing Grid. Tvicon TV STORY-Rain

Doctor K mentions that Lord Drakkon's Black Dragon Cannons which were designed to disrupt Grid connections could disrupt Bio-Field connections indicating they are one and the same. Tvicon TV STORY-Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (Boom! Studios) Issue 27

The Grid actually exists in most universes with only the Void disconnected due to a planet of Zeo Crystals called the Splintered Star and will atrophy unless reconnected. This place was also home to the Solarix, a Grid fragment that supercharges Ranger powers allowing them to utilize the Grid's ability to create constructs and letting them morph in places with no access whatsoever. Tvicon TV STORY-Beyond the Grid

The Grid's physical form is shown as a boulder with a gem that functions like an absorption device allowing Rangers to add memories to the Grid; it also works like a psychic's crystal ball allowing Rangers a small glimpse of future Rangers and battles; the Grid is later shown to have electrical surges firing off inside. Tvicon TV STORY-Once a Ranger

Once a Ranger's memories have been added it will go into a standby mode so only the future Rangers themselves can insert memories. However, certain objects can suppress them such as the Rock of Time.Tvicon TV STORY-Rangers Back in Time

Other malevolent entities can tap into the Grid's power or collect its data for their own purposes; many have done this to create or become evil Rangers, take control of Zords and Megazords, provide energy sources for or create weapons, monsters and other things, provide countermeasures against the Rangers and block out or cut off access to the Grid entirely.

The Grid can only contain a single bearer each of a certain power meaning when two or more of the same color and power-type try coexisting one will have to go. This is shown when the Grid suffers an imbalance from Trent Fernandez-Mercer and his clone.Tvicon TV STORY-Strange Relations This is also mentioned when Zordon forbids the use of the second Pterodactyl Power Coin stating a line that has become somewhat memetic, "Too much pink energy is dangerous." Tvicon TV STORY-Wild West Rangers

Oddly enough the Grid does not fluctuate erratically when Lauren Shiba is introduced as the true Red Samurai Ranger; this may have been due to Lauren's use of an older Samuraizer in comparison to the newer one her brother Jayden Shiba wielded. Tvicon TV STORY-Fight Fire With Fire

In Power Rangers Super Megaforce, Gosei warned that using the Legendary Ranger Keys for an extended period and in general challenges their strengths and weaknesses each time they unlock new powers. Indeed, a well-placed shot during their first battle forces the team to return from the forms of the Mystic Rangers prompting them to do constant switches from then on. In Super Megaforce it is unknown how Gosei linked the Ranger Keys to the Grid to allow the Super Mega Rangers to transform into past Rangers. Tvicon TV STORY-Super Megaforce (episode)

Much of the Grid is unknown or not explained in the series although Zordon mentioned twice that the destruction of the Rangers' Zords also means the loss of their powers as with the Thunderzords. This is most likely true only for teams such as the original Power Rangers as many subsequent generations lose their Zords and their powers remain intact though in some cases only temporarily. When Lord Zedd attempts to destroy the Dino Megazord the Rangers do not lose their powers because Alpha 5 rescues whatever he can to recreate them as the Thunderzords (it is assumed what remains are used to create new Zords again and again since they are components of the Thunderzords). Tvicon TV STORY-Ninja Quest

With some Rangers, their powers and health are (un)willingly connected and if spread too far and thin the resulting consequences can be dangerous. Accordingly, when Kimberly Ann Hart had her Crane Power Coin stolen and presumably replaced with a fake by Katherine Hillard she begins to weaken and her life-force fades away, especially in battle and during gymnastics training which lands her in the hospital. Tvicon TV STORY-Changing of the Zords

Alpha 6 told Adam Park in Power Rangers in Space that using a damaged Morpher might kill him and Adam started to lose his remaining powers after he morphed to fight Lizwizard which takes a toll on his body. Tvicon TV STORY-Always a Chance

In Dino Thunder, Tommy Oliver mentioned that the only way to sever the Dino Gems' bonds with their hosts was to destroy said hosts. Tvicon TV STORY-Day of the Dino

In Power Rangers Ninja Storm, when the first five Ninja Storm Rangers faced Madtropolis they were left weak and tired until Cameron Watanabe helped restore their powers Tvicon TV STORY-The Samurai's Journey.

When Motodrone siphoned off Hunter Bradley's energy he was unable to move whatsoever although Cam revealed that only an imprint of Hunter's power was taken. Tvicon TV STORY-Brothers In Arms

When Lothor used Cam's Samurai Amulet to steal their powers permanently, only the Wind Rangers' civilian powers remained which they use to seal Lothor in the Abyss of Evil although their Power Disks only have enough energy left for one last battle by the time he escaped. Tvicon TV STORY-Storm Before the Calm

It was theorized by Jen Scotts that the Grid can manipulate the space-time continuum should something catastrophic happen as the linear timeline is separated into different universes following the death of Tommy at the hands of his alternate self Drakkon since he is important to the Rangers as a whole that the Grid literally separates eras to isolate Ranger teams so deaths of other previous members do not affect later ones. Tvicon TV STORY-Shattered Grid

Zordon travelled into the Grid to speak with the Morphing Masters through the Emissaries Three; little else is known aside from the fact they are powerful. However, his attempt to gain an audience with them meant he sacrificed his future in the Grid saying at minimum he would've joined it upon death (similar to Star Wars when Force-users become "one with the Force" upon mortal death). It is unknown if all beings become one with the Grid or Zordon would be a special case. Tvicon TV STORY-Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (Boom! Studios) FCBD 2018 Special

The Grid also has the power to manipulate matter; Alpha taps into the Grid to produce flowers outside the Command Center and clothes for Bulk and Skull when the reprogrammed Alpha teleports them to the Australian outback. Tvicon TV STORY-The Wedding

It can also be inferred that with the same applications the Grid can turn things such as the Galactabeasts, Animal Spirits and Wildzords into actual Zords.

History

In Dino Thunder, it was revealed Tommy that found the Grid's physical form and used it to create the Ranger Archives with information on every generation of Rangers leading up to that point in time. Tvicon TV STORY-Legacy of Power

In Power Rangers S.P.D., Kat Manx and a group of human scientists experimented with the Grid to create the morpher technology used by S.P.D. Rangers though this had the side-effect of mutating the humans' genetics and DNA causing their children to be born with unusual superhuman abilities. Tvicon TV STORY-Sam

Kat later mentioned overhauling the Grid to review previous Ranger battles. Tvicon TV STORY-Insomnia

In Operation Overdrive. the Grid is damaged by Thrax, Flurious' forces, Moltor's forces, Kamdor's forces and the Fearcats. When Sentinel Knight restores the Retro Rangers' powers it is shown the only damaged part of the Grid is the section connected to the Overdrive Rangers. Andrew Hartford reinforced the Grid to prevent further damage but it has to be repaired from the inside which a reactivated Alpha 6 does. Tvicon TV STORY-Once a Ranger

Groups and individuals such as Lightspeed, Time Force, the Animarian Warriors, the Wind and Thunder Ninja Academies, Space Patrol Delta, Hartford, Robert James, the Ancient Samurai Rangers and Gosei are shown to have established access to the Grid to form Ranger teams but how they found the Grid itself is given little to no explanation at all.

The Grid is presumably where Noah Carver acquires the Legendary Ranger Database, whose data on past Rangers proved invaluable against the Armada. Tvicon TV STORY-Earth Fights Back It is possible, though not confirmed, that the database's information comes from Rangers storing their knowledge in the Grid as seen in Dino Thunder's S.P.D. preview. Tvicon TV STORY-Before it Began

In Beast Morphers, it was revealed Grid Battleforce discovered a substance originating from the Grid created by Nate Silva called Morph X; through its connections to the Grid they learn of other Rangers and their battles against evil forces such as Rita Repulsa, Sledge and Galvanax. The idea of using the Grid as a power source disturbed Mayor Adam Daniels who worries another evil will rise in light of this like all Ranger enemies which is later confirmed through the emergence of Evox (later confirmed to be Venjix) who wishes to take over the Grid itself. Luckily the Grid Battleforce, having foreseen this formed the Beast Morphers Rangers. Following the final defeat of Evox, all Morph-X in Coral Harbor was sucked into the air and reabsorbed into the Morphin Grid. In light of the mass destruction reaped in the final battle, it was decided that Morph-X would no longer be developed and be permanently discontinued. Instead, Coral Harbor switched to more natural and renewable means such as wind and solar power. Tvicon TV STORY-Evox Unleashed

The Morphin Grid was also capable of changing a highly powerful meteor into a Power Coin as well as summoning the user of said coin in an instant. Tvicon TV STORY-Grid Connection

Notes

  • The Morphin Grid is a concept exclusive to Power Rangers. In the Super Sentai franchise, the Super Sentai all get their powers from various sources ranging from the literal ancient continent of Pangaea to ninjas.
    • At first, the Morphin Grid was just a random thing mentioned in technobabble to explain deus ex-machinas. However, in the episode "A Zeo Beginning-part II", Saban used it as the source of thier powers in the first place to explain where the Zeo Crystal gave the Zeo Rangers thier powers.
  • People like Andrew Hartford (founder and benefactor of the Overdrive Rangers) and RJ (mentor and fellow member of the Jungle Fury Rangers) have been shown to have access to the Grid through connections. Andrew likely had an information network to find ex-Rangers to help him make a connection to the Grid for his team, while RJ had his acquaintance make four Morphers. Both of them made the Ranger arsenal from scratch with real world material and not Grid energy constructs.
    • In addition, Lightspeed Rescue were the first to create man-made Ranger powers. Though the Lightspeed Rangers' tech is implied to have been solely created by Angela Fairweather, it's possible Lightspeed Rescue made contact with the Space Rangers and Alpha 6 on Mirinoi for help.
    • The latter would explain how Alpha ended up being found in an Angel Grove storage depot by the Retro Rangers in 2007.
  • Throughout the fight scenes of Power Rangers, sparks fly off Ranger suits when they get hit. In the YouTube series "DeathBattle!", it was speculated to actually be the energy of the Grid taking hits for the Rangers which makes sense as the Rangers suffer blasts and strikes that would normally seriously harm and/or kill a person.
    • In the Boom! comics, Jason and Trini were shown lifting boulders the size of small houses and running at incredible speeds.
    • Billy and Kimberly initially had no combat training. But once morphed, they became great fighters, showing the Grid can give martial arts skills.
    • In the 2017 film, this served as the plot point where the new bearers of Power Coins are shown breaking things they touch until getting used with their enhanced strength and Billy finds himself bewildered to see his long time bully failed to break his arm and later, knocks himself out cold in the attempt to headbutt him thanks to Morphin Grid enhanced his durability. Although, other beings with sufficient power such as Rita, the former Green Ranger, can still hurt them.
