Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #43 is the forty-fourth actual issue of the Boom! Studios comic book series, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers which begins its numbering with Issue 0.

It is the fourth issue of the Necessary Evil story arc, the sixth story arc of the comics.

Synopsis[]

NECESSARY EVIL continues as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers finally come face to face with the Mastermind behind all of their recent problems—the evil Lord Zedd. Meanwhile, the newly launched Omega Power Ranger team is stranded on an unfamiliar planet with no hope of getting home![1]

Plot[]

In the Command Center, Billy recounts the battle against Dayne to Zordon and how badly it went. At first, the Rangers thought that their opponent was just trying to intimidate them but it quickly became clear that he knew exactly what he was doing. Dayne used his incredible speed and agility to make a quick advance towards Kimberly, attacking her and breaking her thumb by using his foot to crush her hand to disable her ability to use her Power Bow.

Everything fell apart after that, with Rocky quick to try and order the team to get Kimberly out of danger only to be blinded by Dayne throwing a sticky tar like substance on his helmet. Adam rushed in to try to attack Dayne, but the Sirian assassin deployed cybernetic bee drones to sting Adam, causing him to panic and desperately try to get them off. Aisha tried to get Dayne from behind in a sneak attack, but the alien canine’s acute sense of hearing detected her and he roundhouse kicked her aside. Billy states that Dayne came to pick them apart and used psychological methods to bring out their worst fears and he was toying with them all the while during the fight. If he was really serious, all of them would have been killed at any moment.

Billy tried to request to Tommy that they use formation “Beta-Five”, which he agrees to if Billy and Kimberly can create a diversion to keep attention away from him. The two charge towards Dayne and dodge his plasma whips long enough for Tommy to try and rush Dayne with a powered up slash from Saba, but the assassin anticipated this tactic and dodges it. It turns out he was whittling down the Rangers just so he could target Tommy directly and they fell for his trap. Zordon says what happened to Tommy was not Billy’s fault, but his for not realizing that Dayne would attack them.

The sage recalls that he had dealings with Lord Zedd’s personal assassin, telling Billy his name is Dayne and his methods are taking perverse delight to personalize his methods of attack, being ruthlessly cunning and meticulous and never engaging in battle unless it is on his own terms. If he left them alive, he had a reason for doing so, otherwise they would be dead. Tommy may have been a skilled warrior, but he is still new to his White Ranger powers and doesn’t know his limitations. Zordon insists that today is a lesson for the Rangers that they need better teamwork and to build up each other’s strengths and guard their weaknesses or enemies such as Dayne will turn that against them. But they will eventually have to face him again on their own.

As Zordon speaks, the end of the battle is shown as Dayne matches Tommy in power and hits him repeatedly with his plasma blades. Tommy tries to use Saba at full power, but Dayne generates an energy shield to block the attack and then strikes him down in a single blow. Tommy demorphs and is badly wounded, forcing the Rangers to retreat after grabbing him. The team stands around the unconscious Tommy in the infirmary, with Kimberly sadly holding his hand as all of them are shaken by defeat.

Meanwhile, on the planet Breel, the Omega Rangers have been discovered by Queen Adriyel through her network of spies and she threatens to destroy their ship. The Rangers use the planet’s unique properties to establish telepathic communication with each other and with no other options, morph to battle the Queen’s forces. The group hear random thoughts from each other, such as Trini missing using her Power Daggers, Zack trying not to think about how attractive Queen Adriyel is and Jason trying to relay an order only to be smacked away by the Queen. Adriyel expresses disappointment at the fact she is facing a different “red one” than the one she faced before in their previous encounter (namely Trini who was color swapped at the time).

She orders for her super weapon to be fired to destroy the Spectrum, but nothing happens. She is enraged that someone named Cavotas is not obeying her commands and storms off downstairs. Trini and Zack follow while ordering Kiya to check on Jason. Trini remarks mentally as they chase after the Queen that Adriyel isn’t hot, which leaves Zack embarrassed and thinking that telepathy is useful but also dangerous.

Kiya checks on Jason, who says he is fine aside from a headache and he hasn’t been hit that hard since his battle with Lord Drakkon. This freaks Kiya out upon hearing that name and seeing Jason’s thoughts and memories of a war, Lord Drakkon and the Shattering.

Meanwhile on the Moon at the Palace, Lord Zedd is enraged that Dayne had the White Ranger at his mercy and didn’t take the opportunity to kill him immediately afterwards. Dayne thinks his old colleague is implying he ran away, to which Zedd says either he did run or someone bribed him to not carry out the hit. Dayne then asks what Zordon would do if his Rangers died and Zedd responds that he would recruit new Rangers to replace them. Dayne explains that he took out their leader and left him broken to demoralize the team, have failure really sink into their minds even for a moment.

Dayne will then fight them in their emotionally and physically wounded state and then he will severely cripple the Zords. The trauma of being unable to stop him and possibly staring death in the face will cause one of the Rangers to crack mentally and they will surrender and give them Zordon in exchange for sparing them. Zedd wonders how he is certain that this plan will work, to which Dayne states that desperate people can’t dig themselves out of their own graves without burying someone else. Zedd says that if such a thing happened, he will double what he was going to pay Dayne, only for the assassin to respond that he demands triple of the original offer.

Dayne then returns to Earth as a giant to attack Angel Grove as the citizens flee in terror.

Back on Breel, Adriyel enters a chamber where Cavotas, an enslaved Kedry, is yelled at by her for not unleashing his Empowered abilities. Cavotas refuses to help her as he cannot take any more of his part of killing thousands on multiple worlds and begs to be freed from his chains. Adriyel refuses and finds it pathetic that such a weak creature would be gifted such immense powers and forces him to activate his empowered abilities and try to unleash them on her enemies, only to be stopped by the arrival of the Omega Rangers after they defeated her royal guards.

Trini engages Adriyel, who recognizes her voice despite having a “new color”, and they fight until Kiya and Jason arrive. Adriyel gloats that she still intends to destroy the Omega Rangers and their ship and after that the galaxy will bow to her as its new ruler. Once she finishes collecting the rest of the Empowered and enslave them, Adriyel will further enhance her power and reach to eventually lay siege to the entire universe. She begins to gloat more but Cavotas snaps, screaming and using his chains and enhanced strength to break the evil queen’s jaw and snap her neck, killing her. Cavatos cries that he wants no more death and doesn’t want to be tortured anymore, begging the Omega Rangers to free him from the curse of his powers. XI finally gets comm links up and asks the Rangers if they secured the Empowered, which Jason confirmed and they will destroy the temple from orbit after XI picks them up.

Once on the Spectrum, Cavotas tells his story, that he served his queen as a blacksmith and had a wife and children. But upon absorbing the excess Grid energy into his body, Queen Adriyel became cruel and wanted his power for her personal gain. She murdered his family and all who knew him to hide his existence and imprisoned him inside the temple. Zack feels bad for Cavotas, apologizing that they didn’t find him sooner, while Cavotas asks what will happen to him as he thinks he will be tortured, executed or eaten. Trini reassures him that he is going to be placed somewhere safe and he has nothing to fear from them.

Jason goes to check on Kiya, asking if she feels okay after that conversation that they had. She reassured him she is fine, it was just odd sharing minds with her team and hearing voices in her head, she is just looking forward to returning home to Safehaven.

Upon returning to Safehaven, the Blue Emissary says Cavotas must be confined to The Vault as a means to protect himself from harming others or himself. Trini objects to this, trying to defend his actions of killing Adriyel by justifying the act given the cruelty that Cavotas endured. Blue states that Cavotas has committed murder by his own choice and is a weapon tempered by the Grid itself, Trini should know this..or she will soon. Trini says that he should try to “talk forward” for once and pleaded for the Emissary to not imprison Cavotas, with Zack also vouching for him saying that the poor Kedry had suffered enough under Adriyel’s torture. Cavotas cries and appeals to the “floating blue god” that he didn’t want to kill his queen but upon hearing her evil plans he knew of only one way to survive. Jason also tried to appeal for Cavotas but Blue refuses as Cavotas is too dangerous, Kiya argues that if Cavotas is going to be imprisoned then she should be too because she killed her entire family, Blue states that was a tragedy and not murder as she had no malice or intention of harming anyone.

XI takes Cavotas and escorts him to the Vault and despite their protests, Blue says that they need to trust his future judgment as he trusted his faith in them.

Trini takes a sad walk outside and then gets a long intergalactic distance voicemail from Kimberly, who starts by saying how much she misses her best friend, she has tried to be happy for her and the others on their world saving peace conference but she has had a hard time accepting that and not to think that the three of them ditched the team when things got rough. Lord Zedd sent down an “alien dog thing” and the battle didn’t go well, Tommy is in really bad shape but they need to go out to fight him again and she doesn’t know how it will end. Kimberly confesses that she is scared and she needs Trini’s help, but she knows that she can’t just “come running and suit up”.

She just misses all three of them and it isn’t the same without them and everybody on the team knows it. Kimberly then calms down and says that everything will be fine and that they can handle Dayne, but wanted to call Trini in case things ended badly and then just tells her to forget about what she said earlier and pleads for her to call her back when she gets the voicemail.

On Earth, the Rangers call the Thunderzords and try to individually attack Dayne, only for him to use his plasma whips to knock them away. The Rangers form the Thunder Megazord and engage Dayne in a sword fight, but Dayne fires a plasma blast to send the Megazord flying into a building. Dayne then pounces onto the Megazord and begins to pierce its chest with his plasma blade, locking himself in a position that pins the Rangers down as the Thunder Megazord’s armor begins to shatter!
