Maria (マリア Maria) was a member of the Vyram and a major antagonist in Chojin Sentai Jetman. Later on in the episodes, Maria was originally Rie Aoi (藍 リエ Aoi Rie), a member of the Sky Force Team and the former girlfriend of Ryu Tendo.
History[]
Rie Aoi[]
Rie was the first female to be part of the Sky Force Team, and was supposed to become White Swan. She was 22 years old and the second female partner of Ryu Tendo.
The first and true love interest of Ryu, they were chosen by commander Aya Odagiri to be exposed to the Birdonic Waves. After Ryu was fully exposed to the Birdonic waves, however, Dimensional War Party Vyram appeared and tried to destroy the Sky Force's Earth Ship.
Some parts of the ship were damaged badly, and Rie got stuck in a hole. Despite Ryu trying to save her, she fell out of the ship and was kidnapped by Back Dimensional Count Radiguet. TV STORY-Seek the Warriors
Maria[]
Radiguet brainwashed Rie in order to remove her memories, and made her an official of Vyram. She created the Bio Dimensional Bug, a bug that becomes a Bio Dimensional Monster when put on an object, and also had her own weapon called Necrod, which could be used as a whip, a gun or a sword. Despite being brainwashed, she still loved to play the piano and often played it for Grey. Eventually, after being wounded by Majin Ramon and Gorg, she reverted back into her former self, Rie, in front of Ryu, reuniting the couple. Sadly the reunion was short lived, as Radiguet once again brainwashed her to be Maria, causing Ryu to have a temporary mental breakdown. TV STORY-Ep. 31: The Sentai Disbands
After Tran morphed into Tranza, she and the other Vyram were subjugated by him. After his defeat at the hands of Jetmen and Radiguet, Radiguet used his blood and turned Maria into a vampiric creature. Ryu freed her from the state and she turned back into Rie, but weighed down by the guilt of the things she commited as Maria, she told him she didn't belong with him. When Radiguet showed up, she stabbed him in the back and he fatally slashed her in response. She told Ryu to let her go, to erase her from his heart and keep the soul of a warrior. Grey arrived and took Rie away to a beach. When she died, Grey cried, and his tears dissolved her body, scattering it to the ocean.
Legacy[]
When Rie stabbed Radiguet, she left an open wound, which the Jetmen struck to get pass his otherwise impenetrable armor, and destroy what remained of the Vyram for good.
Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai[]
Maria is one of several past Super Sentai villains that appear in clips in the anniversary special Hyakuju Sentai Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai.
Personality[]
Prior to being brainwashed, Rie Aoi was a cheerful, happy person who loved and cared a lot about Ryu. The two complimented each other well, be it in their personal lives or on the battlefield.
After the brainwashing by Radiguet, Maria became a cold, ruthless and condescending general of Vyram who believed that it was her destiny to conquer other worlds. She often took advantage of humanity's weaknesses (i.e. Greed, vanity) in order to create her monsters, all the while mocking them for having such exploitable flaws. Much like her fellow generals, Maria resented having to work under anyone else, only doing so grudgingly under Emperor Tranza when the latter's power was too much for her.
Despite her apparent merciless personality as Maria, remnants of her past lives as Rie still surfaced from time to time even without her being aware of it, such as her playing the piano or enjoying fine wine. It was these traits that made her so endearing to Grey. Maria herself appeared to return the robot's affection, having come to the robot's aid a few times.
When Ryu finally freed Rie from her brainwashing, she was filled with remorse for the crimes she had committed as Maria, ultimately accepting death as atonement for her sins. Although her love for Ryu was just as great as before, she told him to forget her and move on, since she had had too much blood on her hands to have a happy life. In death, she lamented how she would have wanted to start everything over with her lover, while finding some peace in Grey's arms.
