This article is about a/an episode in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury. |
Lightning Strikes[1] is the first episode of Power Rangers Cosmic Fury. It features the return of Lord Zedd, Scrozzle, Billy Cranston and Mick Kanic, as well as the debut of the Cosmic Fury Megazord, and new villains : Bajillia, her daughter Squillia, Inkworth and Doodrip. It follows directly from the finale of Dino Fury.
Synopsis[]
Bajillia enlists Lord Zedd to lead her armies in an intergalactic war and things only get worse when a Ranger joins their side.
Plot[]
Following the news that Lord Zedd has escaped from his crystal prison, the Rangers teleport to his last known location, Zordnia. The Rangers and the Morphin Masters fight an army of monsters and Zentinel foot soldiers to locate Zedd, unaware that the latter is overlooking the fight with a squid monster named Bajillia Naire, the CEO of Squid Ink Inc.. Bajillia explains that she had her forces go to Zordnia to mine for resources, but they found Zedd's energy source instead, leading them to free him so he can help start an intergalactic war. Bajillia gives Zedd her forces and resources to lead the conquest, and he accepts her deal, but not before threatening to end her if she fails him.
Meanwhile, Billy, morphed as the Mighty Morphin Blue Ranger, joins the fight, with Ollie taking notice. It is also revealed that Mick Kanic is on the planet as well, disguised as a rock until some cinders from a destroyed monster land on him. Ollie joins Billy fight off some Zentinels, and the latter is grateful for the help as Zordnia is too far for him to contact Earth, meaning he cannot call on his teammates. Elsewhere, Amelia catches Mick on what has happened to the team since they last met, revealing her Rafkonian biology and how Tarrick and Santaura were her long-lost parents.
Back on the cliff, Bajillia's daughter Squillia comes by and immediately fan girls over Lord Zedd. An annoyed Bajillia asks about the secret weapon Scrozzle is building, but Squillia says it is taking too long. After seeing the Rangers decimate her forces, Bajillia uses a Squidrill to create more Zentinels for Zedd to command. Pleased by that, Zedd prepares to lead a ground assault, with Squillia and a Copyguard tagging along.
Zedd teleports his forces to the battlefield, and the Rangers immediately attack him. However, Zedd pushes them aside and takes out Billy with a blast. As the fight continues, Ollie laments over the fact they have no Zords to help them out, but Amelia reminds him that they still have their remaining arsenal. Taking the hint, Ollie uses the Cosmic Dino Key to create a portal, which Amelia uses to send away a few with a kick.
With Zedd getting impatient by the minute, Squillia calls Doodrip for assistance. Doodrip fires a blue slime at the Rangers, explaining that it will turn them evil under Zedd's command. However, Lord Zedd tells Doodrip that the poison was specifically only meant for the Blue Ranger and while most of the Rangers are unaffected by the slime, Ollie is corrupted as the poison turns him evil. After being corrupted by the poison, Ollie creates another portal, and Zedd kicks Zayto into it, closing on the Rangers as Aiyon fails to save his friend. Amelia and Javi restrain Ollie and take away the Cosmic Dino Key before he can use it again, while Zedd fires Doodrip for failing to corrupt all the Rangers.
As Mick hides behind a rock, Master Red comes to him, making the former Ninja Steel Red again to even the odds. Now a Ranger again, Mick enters the fray and helps the team out, only for Scrozzle to arrive with the weapon he built, the Master Captivator. Under Bajillia's orders, Scrozzle fires at the Morphin Masters and traps them in the Captivator, much to the Rangers' shock and horror. Before the Master Red is captured, he throws his Morphin Master Staff to Javi, giving the latter a vision of a pedestal being stricken with lightning. With the Morphin Masters captured, the Rangers teleport to the location Master Red showed Javi before Lord Zedd blasts them.
Angry that the Rangers escaped, Lord Zedd confronts Bajillia for a new plan. Bajillia confidently says that without the Morphin Masters, the Rangers have no support like they used to. And with a Squidrill looking for the Rangers, Zedd is satisfied by the outlook, as it will be a matter of time before he rules as the Emperor of Evil. Ollie goes out in the Squidrill and has Zentinels search for the Rangers.
The Rangers teleport to the pedestal and demorph. Mick recognizes the pedestal as the Alter of Zordnia, a relic he and Billy were searching for. Upon closer inspection of the Alter, the Rangers notice that the carvings show a possible Megazord formation, which Billy believes could be true as Zordnia once housed the Shogunzords the Mighty Morphin team used years ago. Mick explains that there are legends about a set of ancient Zords called the Cosmic Fury Zords, but no one has been able to prove their existence until now. Aiyon notices that the key slot in the Alter resembles the end of a Morphin Master Staff and tells Javi to put it in. However, Billy stops Javi as the lighting he saw holds tremendous power that only a Morphin Master could handle, and Mick takes the staff away so they do not risk themselves.
Before Javi can argue, Ollie and his Squidrill arrive, transforming the ship into its' humanoid Battle Mode. As Ollie fires at the Rangers, Javi decides there is no other option and takes the Morphin Master Staff from Mick and plants it into the key slot. The power surges through Javi, as he is knocked away, but the Rangers see that it worked: the Cosmic Fury Zords are released, and they exit out of the Morphin Grid.
As the Cosmic Fury Zords attack the Squidrill, the Rangers watch in awe as Javi comes to. However, as a result of placing the Morphin Master Staff in the key slot, Javi finds out that his right arm is gone, disintegrated in the process whilst he was trying to unlock the Zords. Javi goes into shock as Mick takes him away from the fight, while the other Rangers morph into battle with Billy joining them. Amelia tells the team and Billy to pick a Zord they want to pilot, but she takes the Cosmic Lion Zord as it's needed for the Megazord.
As the Rangers pilot the Zords, they struggle to find how to pilot them due to the unknown symbols on the consoles. Fortunately, they figure out how to attack, and Billy finds out that the Rangers can remotely pilot the other Zords. Amelia refuses to leave Zordnia without Ollie, and the team agrees to form the Cosmic Fury Megazord to take him down. Izzy tries to use the Cosmic Chameleo Lash to wrap the Squid Drill up, but Ollie breaks it and damages the Zord. Billy then substitutes the Cosmic Chameleo Zord with the Cosmic Cobra Zord, and they use its fangs to severely damage the Squid Drill.
As the Rangers charge the Cosmic Fury Megazord's Cosmic Megablast, Amelia warns Ollie about it and demands he surrender. As Squillia leaves, Ollie refuses to stand down. So, Amelia teleports into the Squidrill's cockpit to get Ollie, only for him to order the Zentinels to attack her. Fortunately, Amelia fights back and uses the Snooze Key to make everyone fall asleep. After Amelia teleports her and Ollie out of the Squidrill, the Rangers destroy the ship with the Megazord's Cosmic Megablast. Suddenly, Billy picks up various amounts of Squidrills approaching Zordnia's orbit, and the group agrees to return to Earth.
Meanwhile, Lord Zedd is given a Mega Squidrill and a butler named Inkworth for his services, while Squillia gives the former an update. Fed up with the Rangers interfering with his plans, Zedd decides to deal with them for once and has his forces go to Earth.
Back at Dinohenge, the Rangers, Tarrick, Mick, and Pop-Pop argue over what to do next, only for Amelia to stop them by having Solon roar. Amelia organizes the group and brings out the hard facts: Lord Zedd is back with a huge fleet, and the Morphin Masters cannot help them like they did before. Mick says that he and Billy contacted the other Ranger teams across the globe for a potential invasion, and Tarrick offers the Rafkonian soldiers to help the Rangers out. Also, Mick promises Aiyon that they will find Zayto as he believes the Morphin Masters brought him back for a reason.
Billy exits the medical bay and informs the others about Ollie and Javi. While both are stable, Javi will have to come to terms with the fact that his limb is gone forever. Izzy is not happy as Javi's musical dreams will be crushed, but Solon gives her some encouragement as she was once in the latter's position. Lani promises to recreate the antidote that cured Ollie before, and Billy believes that despite the day they had, the Rangers will be able to handle any threat Lord Zedd throws at them.

Errors[]
- It would be impossible for Ollie to obtain the Cosmic Dino Key, as the Light Dino Key which is required to form the key was destroyed by Void Queen in "Wishful Thinking".
- If the viewers look close when Amelia pulls out the Cosmic Dino Key from Ollie’s Chromofury Saber, she never opens it, neither does she close it
Notes[]
- Cosmic Fury Megazord Combinations:
- ◆◆◆◆◆
- ◆◆◆◆◆
- Zayto only appears unmorphed in a flashback.
- This episode contains several references to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
- The planet Zordnia first appeared in the episode "Changing of the Zords". In this episode, the Shogunzords were first discovered.
- Billy piloting the Cosmic Wolf Zord is a nod to how in the third season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers he piloted both the Wolf Ninjazord and the Wolf Shogunzord.
- This is also the first time Lord Zedd and Billy meet face to face since “Climb Every Fountain” in Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers. In turn, this is the first confrontation he’s had with a Ranger from the Zordon Era since his return.
- Solon's roar is most likely reversed stock footage from the episode "Unexpected Guest".
- Beginning from this episode, Billy's morphing sequence would receive a further update from its appearance in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, only showing his face, arms, and morpher similar to the morphing sequence from the first season of the original series.
- In addition, Billy's new morphing sequence now ends with a zoom shot towards his face as his Ranger helmet forms, in a similar style to the Red Ranger's helmet forming during the morphing sequence of the first two seasons of Mighty Morphin.
