This article is about an episode in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. |
Life's a Masquerade is the twenty-fifth episode of the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. It is the beginning of the two-episode Super Putty story-arc.
Synopsis[]
Ernie is throwing a costume party at the Angel Grove Youth Center. Alpha 5 becomes a surprise guest when he wants to hang out with his beloved friends. To keep the Rangers and Alpha busy, Rita creates a Frankenstein Monster to crash the party.
Plot[]
The Rangers are helping decorate the Youth Center for the Halloween costume party. Zack helps Jason hang streamers, but gets distracted by Angela. Bulk and Skull are roped into helping, but it quickly ends with a paint can being launched onto Bulk's head.
Finster announces that the Super Putty is ready and Rita requests a monster to distract the Rangers. Finster creates a Frankenstein Monster which is sent to Angel Grove.
The five main Rangers convene at Billy's house, all wearing costumes. Tommy is still finishing his costume and plans on catching up with them. Bulk and Skull try on costumes in hope of finding ones that will win the big prize at the party, but just end up going in their usual punk outfits. Alpha shows up because he wanted to party and hang out with the Rangers, and the costume party would be the perfect opportunity (Alpha is soon surrounded by fawning girls, to Zack's consternation). Frankenstein Monster crashes as well, but no one seems to notice; Ernie even points out the wonderful "costume".
Meanwhile, Finster heads the mining of the Super Putty within a cave outside the city.
The Frankenstein Monster fails several attempts to catch the Rangers. He becomes enraged by a partygoer who dragged him to the dance floor, he mistaken her for the Pink Ranger and try to attack and throw her. He chases Bulk and Skull out of the Youth Center, thinking they are Rangers who attack him; he then wanders off, Billy following him.
The monster ventures into the cave where Finster and the Putties are mining. Billy follows it into the cave and trips a sensor, alerting Rita, who had arrived to oversee the mining. She sends the Frankenstein Monster after him. He morphs, and, after a brief skirmish, an earthquake rocks through the city. He regroups with the others at the costume party as Rita erupts from the surface of Angel Grove on top of a giant ball of Super Putty. At the Command Center, Zordon fills the five in on Rita's plans and they try to contact Tommy. Tommy is ambushed by Putties outside the Youth Center, but the other five morph and go to confront Frankenstein Monster. It proves to be powerful and the Rangers are barely holding out when Rita makes the Frankenstein Monster grow.
The Megazord duels with the monster and Tommy is finally able to morph and join his friends. Neither the Dragonzord or the Megazord have any luck fighting the creature so the Dragonzord in Battle Mode is formed. With the the Power Staff, the Rangers finally destroy the monster.
Back at the Youth Center, the Rangers celebrate their victory over Rita once again. Tommy runs off to change into his costume. Alpha is still surrounded by his fans and Bulk and Skull (who both have no idea that Alpha's a real robot) pick on the young robot, calling him a tin can. Tommy returns in his Frankenstein Monster costume, which is a perfect recreation of the monster they just defeated. Ernie declares the winner of the costume contest to be... Alpha! Bulk tells Skull to grab a can opener, as he wants to learn who Alpha really is, but Alpha states that his identity is a mystery that will have to remain unsolved, and he walks off with his newfound fan club.

Errors[]
- This episode aired after Gung Ho!, but that episode dealt with and completed the Super Putties storyline. Chronologically, it should have aired after this episode. The DVD, iTunes and Netflix do place the two episodes in the correct order.
- The Red Ranger refers to Dragonzord Battle Mode as the Mega Dragonzord.
- The ball and chain the Frankenstein Monster was using vanished between his attack and him charging at the Dragonzord Battle Mode.
Notes[]
- Tommy's Halloween outfit is the American version of the Frankenstein Monster costume.
- Instead of saying "It's Morphin Time", Billy says "It's time for molecular transmutation".
- The Frankenstein Monster has had the most screen time out of all previous monsters in the series.
- Billy has his first solo morph in this episode.
- The "Bride of Frankenstein" girl that tries dancing with the Frankenstein Monster is unnamed in the episode - but the script reveals it is meant to be Sharkie, Bulk and Skull's hanger-on from Teamwork and Food Fight![1]
- The cave that Billy follows the monster to would later be used in Saban's Masked Rider as Dex Stewart's vehicular allies' hiding place.
- Halloween costumes featured in this episode include:
- Kimberly as a Princess
- Billy as Sherlock Holmes
- Zack as King Tut (ancient Egyptian Pharaoh)
- Jason as Robin Hood
- Trini as Pocahontas
- Skull as Captain Hook, front-half of a horse, and young Elvis
- Bulk as Peter Pan, back-end of a horse, and old Elvis
- Alpha 5 as himself, a robot
- Angela as a belly dancer or female genie
- Ernie as Dracula
- Sharkie as Bride of Frankenstein
- Tommy as Frankenstein
