Logo-supersentaiThis article is about a series entry (the "41st") in the Super Sentai series.

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger (宇宙戦隊キュウレンジャー Uchū Sentai Kyūrenjā), translated as Space Squadron Nine Ranger, is the 41st season of Super Sentai. It joined Kamen Rider Ex-AidIcon-crosswiki on the Super Hero Time block on February 12, 2017, replacing Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger. After Ex-Aid's finale, Kamen Rider BuildIcon-crosswiki joined Kyuranger on the Super Hero Time block, along with a new airtime an hour later. On February 11, 2018, it was replaced by Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger as part of the Super Hero Time block. It has a space theme, with the Rangers themed after constellations and gear based on stars and planets.

Kyuranger received a South-Korean dub and aired in South Korea as Power Rangers Galaxy Force (파워레인저 갤럭시포스 Pawaleinjeo Gaelleoksiposeu). On April 27, 2019, Kyuranger show was dubbed in Indonesian under the name Kyuuranger [1], making it the first Super Sentai show since Gingaman be aired in Indonesia, as well as the first 2010s Super Sentai show to be aired in Southeast Asia. The dub was made available on Youtube in the same year, but has been taken down as of 2022.

A full adaptation of Kyuranger for Power Rangers was skipped by Hasbro in favor of Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger, which became Power Rangers Dino Fury. Its third season titled Power Rangers Cosmic Fury utilized monster suits and Voyager System footage for Zords.

The average ratings of the series was 3.0%.[2]

Use in Power Rangers[]

On April 17, 2017, Kyuranger was jokingly announced on April Fools to be adapted into Power Rangers Nine Force.[3]

In 2019, Saban Capital Group had filed for a "Kyu Rangers" trademark[4][5], indicating that a Kyuranger adaptation had been in the works to a certain extent. However the trademark had expired in 2019 upon the license's transfer to Hasbro, who made the decision to adapt Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters instead for Power Rangers Beast Morphers. According to Simon Bennett, Kyuranger was skipped at the time due to a flaw in the "toy design", with fans speculating the flaw to be the sharp tip of Kajiki Yellow's helmet, which can be a safety hazard.[6] Jason Bischoff, a brand manager for Hasbro, revealed that before he had departed the company, he had pitched an idea for a Kyuranger adaptation titled Power Rangers Supernova, but it never entered development.[7]

After the finale of Beast Morphers, Hasbro announced an adaptation of Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger titled Power Rangers Dino Fury, which skipped over Kyuranger once again. During the airing of Dino Fury which occurred over the standard two years, fans speculated that the 30th season of Power Rangers which celebrated its 30th anniversary, would potentially adapt either Kyuranger or Kiramager, with the latter's main theme of crystals possibly being retrofitted into a space theme.

Upon the critical success of Dino Fury and its cliffhanger ending which depicted the Rangers departing for outer space, Hasbro greenlit a third season titled Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, which Bennett confirmed would only adapt the Zord footage and villains from Kyuranger, omitting out the Kyuranger suits in favor for suits of Hasbro's original design. In response to the fan disappointment of this decision, Bennett stated a concerning difficulty of developing stories for 12 individual Rangers.[8], which was ultimately mitigated by using original suits instead[9], logistically reducing the amount of location scouting need to accurately match Sentai footage, which often times the results were not perfect.[10] This idea came about with Hasbro's recent capabilities of being able to film more original footage, allowing for more original storytelling and resulting in less Sentai footage being used per episode.[11]

Though unintentional, the Kyuranger suits can be briefly seen in Kyuranger zord footage in Cosmic Fury. However on an official capacity, the suits currently remain un-adapted in any Power Rangers media.

Kyuranger-Indonesian-RTVAd

Indonesian ad with logo.

  • This is the first Super Sentai season to be explicitly set in its own universe, distinct from the main universe that the rest of Super Sentai is set in.
  • In addition to representing the number of the first nine ( Kyu) members, the "Kyu" (キュウ) in the title could also represent multiple meanings:
    • ( Kyu) from "ultimate" (究極 Kyukyoku).
    • ( Kyu) from "savior" (救世主 Kyuseishu).
    • ( Kyu) from "astrological sign" (黄道十二宮 Kōdō Jūnikyu).
    • ( Kyu) from "sphere" (球体 Kyutai)
  • This is the first season to have more than five rangers in the core team, with nine; however, it briefly starts with only three rangers in the first episode.
  • This is the first season in which the main objective of the Sentai Team is not to prevent neither the conquest nor the destruction of the Earth at the hands of the villain faction. Instead the main objective is liberating it as it was already conquered by the villain faction.
  • This is the first team whose theme involves actual star constellations, referring to the 88 major constellations of the night sky.
    • While Gorenger was associated with the constellation Cassiopeia ("The Seated Queen"), this is not revealed until the series' final episode.
    • Carranger likewise associates with constellations, but involved completely fictitious "car constellations", unique to their series and not associated with real constellations.
  • This series is the first in the franchise to have a TV Asahi producer as chief producer and have creative input from Bandai America. [15][16]
  • Subaru Kimura is the first foreigner and the youngest voice actor who narrates and voices the Sentai equipment.
  • With this series, Super Sentai's timeslot changed from 7:30am to 9:30am starting in October.[17]
  • With a total of 12 rangers in the show, Kyuranger is the largest Sentai team to date.
