Plot

A Zyuranger insignia
- "From hundreds of millions of years ago, in the age of the dinosaurs, five warriors revive in the present time!"
- ―Narrator[src]
170,000,000 years ago, five ancient human tribes, with the protection of the Guardian Beasts, coexisted with the dinosaurs. This ended when the evil Bandora the Witch started a war on the dinosaurs because of the death of her son Kai. Bandora decided that the only way Kai's death could be avenged was if she sold her soul to Dai-Satan, an evil, almost ice-like head creature who had immense power and who later in the series could be summoned by Bandora. In the end, the five tribes were ruined and the dinosaurs became extinct. The Guardian Beasts sealed Bandora and her minions on the planet Nemesis before going into hibernation. In 1992, Nemesis returned to Earth's orbit. Two astronauts exploring the planet accidentally released her and her minions from their prison. With Bandora free, her arch-enemy, the Mysterious Sage Barza retreated to his underground lair 2,000 meters below the apartment building where he worked as a front. There, he revived the five Holy Warriors of Justice he had been guarding, who had been in suspended animation to be awakened when they were needed. These five were each a member of the ancient human tribes, who coexisted with the dinosaurs. With the aid of the Guardian Beasts, the Zyurangers fought Bandora and her Dora Monsters. Later in the series, after the five had become used to modern times, the leader's big brother comes forth with tales of jealousy and vengeance.

Notes
- Zyuranger was a landmark series for the Super Sentai franchise in a number of ways:
- It was the first Sentai series to have a regular Sixth Ranger character (DragonRanger).
- First series to have a prehistoric animal motif.
- First series to have a seven-piece animal mecha combination, Ultimate Daizyuzin.
- First series to utilize fantasy elements over science-fiction.
- First series to be adapted as a Power Rangers series.
- The opening song and Shippo Piki Piki were performed by Kenta Satou, who played Riki Honoo (Red Turbo) in the 1989 series Kousoku Sentai Turboranger and also performed this series' opening and ending, as well as four insert songs.
- This is the only post-Fiveman season to not get an official tribute episode in Gokaiger, however, one of the Zyurangers does make an appearance in Episode 50, including having a Legend Shift.
- Although not the first series to have an animal-based mech, Zyuranger's mechs were the first to be completely based on animals with no resemblance to other vehicles with animal motifs.
- Back when this series was in production, it was originally going to be titled Kyōryū Sentai Saurusman, and the Rangers were originally going to be a team of 3 boys and 2 girls—Red Tyranno (male), Black Brachio (male), Green Tricera (male), Yellow Stego (female) and Blue Ptera (female)—and their secondary mech was originally going to be a mammoth.
- Several of these concepts would crop up in future Sentai series.
- Having an additional mech based on a mammoth would appear in Ninpu Sentai Hurricaneger with Super Karakuri Beast Revolver Mammoth.
- A male Ranger with a black Brachiosaurus motif would show up in Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger with Asuka.
- Several of these concepts would crop up in future Sentai series.
- This is the first of only two seasons in which the team has a translation in kanji.
- Due to the presence of the word zyu in the title (which is pronounced as jū, the Japanese word for ten), it was rumored this season would have ten Rangers.
TV STORY-Ep. 2: What’s a “Kaiger”?
- The individual cockpits for the Guardian Beasts and DragonCaesar, and the main cockpit Daizyuzin, Gouryuuzin, Zyutei Daizyuzin, and Ultimate Daizyuzin are recycled from Chojin Sentai Jetman's individual cockpits for the Jet Machines and the main cockpit for Jet Icarus, Bird/Jet Garuda, and Great Icarus from the previous season.
- Only two of the six Zyurangers (Red and Blue) have animals classified as dinosaurs. The others are all non-dinosaurs, despite close association with dinosaurs in popular consciousness of the time and since.
- The "sabretoothed tiger" (real name Smilodon) and Woolly Mammoth are extinct Pleistocene mammals from a time long after the extinction even that wiped out non-avian dinosaurs
- The Pteranodon was contemporaneous with some dinosaurs, coming from the Cretaceous Period, but belongs to a separate family of prehistoric reptiles related to, but distinct from dinosaurs, pterosauria.
- DragonCaesar was based on daikaiju like Godzilla, who is generally identified as a mutated or irradiated dinosaur or dragon, with other traits from European dragons.
- King Brachion is the only other mecha in the show whom is based on an actual dinosaur, Brachiosaurus, though this animal lived in a time far older than the late-Cretaceous Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus.
- This is the first series to get an official DVD set release in the U.S. from Shout! Factory.

(From left to right) Reiko Chiba, Takumi Hashimoto, Karan Ashley, Austin St. John, and Seiju Umon at Lexington Comic Con panel in 2015.
- The cast of Zyuranger (Mei, Boi, and Goushi) met their counterparts from "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" (Aisha and Jason) in 2015.
- Even though the series has its own background music, it recycled some music from Turboranger and Chikyu Sentai Fiveman.
- The series itself is included in the mobile game Super Robot Wars X-Ω as a limited-time event, making it the first Tokusatsu series to debut in a Super Robot Wars game.[4]
- Zyuranger is the only Sentai series that had all of its monsters of the week appear in Power Rangers.
- As of 2022, Zyuranger is currently the last Super Sentai series to not have its own movie.
