Logo-supersentaiThis article is about a series entry (the "43rd") in the Super Sentai series.

Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger (騎士竜戦隊リュウソウジャー Kishiryū Sentai Ryūsōjā),[1][2][3] translated as Knight Dragon Squadron Ryusoulger, is the 43rd season of Super Sentai. It has a knights and dinosaurs theme.

On March 17, 2019, it replaced Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger and the 4 Week Continuous Special Super Sentai Strongest Battle!! and joined Kamen Rider Zi-OIcon-crosswiki as part of the Super Hero Time block. After Zi-O's finale, Kamen Rider Zero-OneIcon-crosswiki joined Ryusoulger in the Super Hero Time block. On March 8, 2020, it was replaced by Mashin Sentai Kiramager as part of the Super Hero Time block.

Beginning in August 2019, it began airing in South Korea as Power Rangers Dino Soul (파워레인저 다이노소울).

It has been confirmed by Hasbro that Ryusoulger will be adapted into the 28th season of Power Rangers in 2021. However, the title and plot of the season is currently unknown.[4] The average rating is 2.6%.[6]

Plot

65 million years ago, the immensely powerful Druidon Tribe reigned over Earth. The tribe abandoned the planet when a gigantic meteor approached, vowing that they would return as the rulers of the world again as they headed into space.

The Ryusou Tribe who battled against the Druidon Tribe stayed on Earth, along with their dinosaur companions, the Kishiryu. The Ryusou Tribe withstood the ice age brought on by the gigantic meteor. They placed their Kishiryu companions into the Ryusouls and sealed them in temples throughout the world.

Time has moved on and the Druidon Tribe has returned after fighting in harsh environments across space, totally increasing their powers. The Ryusou Tribe that kept the Earth safe in the past has selected new knights: the Ryusoulgers. They have been revived by their mission as the battle against the Druidon Tribe begins. [2]

Notes

  • The series and Sentai team name has wordplay in it, as "Ryusou" could mean "Dinosaur Armament" in English translation and Ryusoulger phonetically sounds like "Ryu Soldier" "Ryu" means dragons, so literally "Dragon Soldier".
  • As with Choujuu Sentai Liveman, the final Showa era series before it, Ryusoulger will be broadcast through two eras of Japanese history. However, while Liveman entered the Heisei era with the death of Emperor Hirohito on January 7, 1989, Ryusoulger entered the Reiwa era with the scheduled abdication of Emperor Akihito on April 30, 2019.
  • Like Shuriken Sentai Ninninger, this season's title has five kanji characters instead of the usual four that precede the team's name.
    • Coincidentally, four years before, Ninninger had similarities with Samurai Sentai Shinkenger due to Sentai teams are based on Japanese warriors (ninjas and samurai),
      • All three teams also have swords as sidearms and main weapon.
      • Ryusoulger having the swordsman motif, ten years since Shinkenger.
  • This series is also similar to Ninpu Sentai Hurricaneger in terms of how the team is structured.
    • The original trio is viewed as sub-par rangers by their mentors but rises to the challenge after their training grounds are attacked by the faction of the season.
    • There is a group of brothers who are initially rivals and have unanswered questions about those who raised them.
    • The Sixth Rangers are only on an alliance basis with the team.
    • Both have plot points that involve the events of the past (the Gouraiger are not allowed to use their powers; the Ryusoul Tribes went to war after the Druidon left, keeping the tribes separated since).
    • Both had mecha that were sealed (Revolver Mammoth and DimeVolcano).
  • This full circled the Gekiranger/Kyoryuger trend in where the airing Sentai resembled the past Sentai.
    • Ryusoulger has similarities with Juken Sentai Gekiranger/Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger
      • The heroes are animal-themed.
      • All had 3-piece mechas.
      • All teams start with 3 Rangers.
        • Their main teams also have only 1 female.
        • All teams had anti-hero (Villain, in Gekiranger) Black and Green Rangers which later become heroes and joined the team.
      • The villain was from the past centuries
      • The main hero/protagonist (Jan Kandou, Daigo Kiryu and Koh) was given the power of Reds by their mentors.
    • Ryusoulger strongly resembles Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger.
      • The heroes are dinosaur-themed (including prehistoric animals).
      • When using Collectible Devices, they have to insert them into Dinosaur's mouth-like part of the weapon.
      • Both had Red, Blue, Pink Mecha as the first Mecha formation. With Red Mecha being Body and Legs, Blue Mecha being right hand and Pink Mecha is left hand.
      • Both teams start with the colors Red, Blue, Pink, Green, and Black Ranger, with the Yellow Ranger being dropped in favor of a sixth Gold Ranger.
      • Interestingly as well, the five core Kyoryuger transform with guns and are mainly gunners while the Kyoryu Gold transforms with an armband and is a swordsman, whereas the five core Ryusoulger transform with armbands and are mainly swordsmen, while Ryusoul Gold transforms with a gun and is a gunner.
  • This is the first Sentai Season to have 2 core Rangers of three colors at the start, namely Red, Blue, and Pink.
  • Ryusoulger is an oddity among the previous Dino Sentai seasons as it is the second to air in the same decade as the previous one as Kyoryuger came out in 2013 while Ryusoulger premiered in 2019.
    • Usually, the dinosaur Sentai seasons are spaced out so that they air once every decade though technically Ryusoulger will air its final episodes during 2020.
      • Zyuranger: 1990s
      • Abaranger: 2000s
      • Kyoryuger: 2010s
  • This is the first time in over 20 years that a Super Sentai series will premiere in March rather than in the middle of or in late February. Usually, on average, a Super Sentai show will end up premiering on the week of Valentine's Day or the weeks after the holiday. The last Sentai to debut in March was Gekisou Sentai Carranger on March 1, 1996. This is due to the Super Sentai time slot for the month of February being filled by a 4-part TV special commemorating the end of the Heisei Era of Super Sentai.
  • This is the first Korean-dubbed Super Sentai show to be aired on the same year as the respective Sentai show itself as Kyuranger's (Power Rangers Galaxy Force) successor, Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger has yet to be aired.
  • This is the first Sentai where the core rangers made their debuts in different shows.
  • Ryusoulger shares some similarities with its Super Hero Time partner Kamen Rider Zi-OIcon-crosswiki.
  • Ryusoulger also shares some similarities with its second Superhero Time partner Kamen Rider Zero-OneIcon-crosswiki.
    • Both have prehistoric animals motif.
      • The Ryusoulgers have a dinosaur motif.
      • The Magias, the monsters of the week of Zero-One has an extinct animal motif.
    • The villain faction is a two-person team operation and a monster at any given time.
      • However, only one Druidon General is seen active at any given point, regardless if two are alive and on Earth.
    • Chess is present in both series (The main Druidon members being based on chess pieces, Gai Amatsu having a chessboard on his desk as a symbol of how he strategizes.)
  • This series also share similarities with Power Rangers Beast Morphers:
    • There are villains that were formerly affiliated with the heroes of the season
      • The Cybervillains were Ranger candidates corrupted by the big bad.
      • Gaisoulg was created by the Ryusoul Tribe.
        • Interestingly, both involve a Red Ranger candidate turning evil (Blaze and Nada)
    • Both have unique monster-making mechanics.
      • A Cybervillian (or on one ocassion, Vargoyle) creates a Robotron whereas Scrozzle will then send a Gigadrone, weather or not the Robotron has been defeated yet.
      • Kleon creates monsters in a more Rider-esque manner.
        • Gaisoulg is also capable of creating them.
    • Both series started in March
    • The Sixth Ranger(s) have a difference in motif with the rest of their team.
      • Canalo has a Mosasaur motif, while the other 5 are land "dinosaurs".
      • Nate and Steel have insect motifs, where the core team are all mammal motifs.
    • Both of the Red and Gold Rangers mecha/Zords can be its own robot without the others.
    • Both feature a Blue-colored auxiliary Robo introduced later on in series:
      • The Beast-X King Zord is Navy and Gold and functions similar to the Beast Racer Zord. It also can be ridden by the Beast Racer Zord in Battle Mode.
      • Kishiryu Pteradon is colored to resemble Ice and can attach on to Tyramigo's back and creates Ptyramigo.
  • It is the first Super Sentai series to have a Brown Ranger, although Ryusoul Brown is a repainted version of Gaisoulg. There was a Brown Warrior in Ninja CaptorIcon-crosswiki but is not considered part of Super Sentai.
  • This is the first time where all the rangers, living and dead, have some connection with their series main villian. Normally it's only one ranger who has a connection with the series villain, such as being a former monster or general. In the Ryusoulger's case, their ancestors were created by Eras.
  • This is the first Mid Season Sentai since Kyukyu Sentai GoGoFive where the gender ratio of the core team are 4 males and 1 female instead of 3 males and 2 females while also being the first Mid Season since Ninja Sentai Kakuranger to feature a core Black Ranger and not have the Red/Blue/Green/Yellow/Pink color scheme.
