This article is about a series entry (the "42nd") in the Super Sentai series. |
WARNING: This series contains scenes of drug material, occasional alcoholic drinking, blood, gun violence and gambling. Viewer discretion is advised! |
Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger (快盗戦隊ルパンレンジャー VS 警察戦隊パトレンジャー Kaitō Sentai Rupanrenjā VS Keisatsu Sentai Patorenjā), translated as Phantom Thief Sentai Lupinranger VS Tactical Unit[1] Patranger, is the 42nd entry in the Super Sentai franchise. It would join Kamen Rider Build on the Super Hero Time block on February 11, 2018, replacing Uchu Sentai Kyuranger.
It has a "cops and robbers" type of theme focusing on two competing Super Sentai teams, with one a police force and the other being a band of thieves.

Notes
- 怪盗 (Kaitou ) is the Japanese word for "phantom thief" or "gentlemen thief".
- 警察 (Keisatsu ) is the Japanese word for "police", "police department" or "police force".
- In light of having two separate teams, this is the first Sentai entry since Ressha Sentai ToQger to have the original Ranger colors of Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, and Pink.
- Patranger is the second police themed Sentai team, after Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger.
- Patranger is the first Sentai team to not have a Blue Ranger, as well as the first main 3-member Sentai team to not have both Blue and Yellow Rangers.
- Lupinranger is the first non-Anniversary treasure hunting themed Sentai team, unlike two other known treasure hunting themed teams GoGo Sentai Boukenger (adventurers) and Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger (pirates).
- Lupinranger's name contains a reference to Arsène Lupin, a fictional gentleman thief and master of disguise created by French writer Maurice Leblanc, and also to Arsène Lupin III, a fictional character created by Monkey Punch and the protagonist of Lupin the Third manga series.
- In an ironic note, Arsène teamed up with Jimmy Kudo (Shinichi Kudo), who was from Case Closed (Detective Conan), a detective-themed anime.
- This is the first season since Samurai Sentai Shinkenger to not have a pre-series cameo.
- This is the first season since Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger to not feature a mecha battle in the first episode.
- This is the first season since Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan to not have a show's title announced at the beginning of the show's opening sequence.
- Just like the premiere episode of Samurai Sentai Shinkenger, Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters, and Shuriken Sentai Ninninger, the opening is omitted and it had the theme song being played in the Lupinrangers' first fight scene instead.
- Continuing the trend started by Kyoryuger/Gekiranger, this series shares many similarities with Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters:
- In both, the opening is omitted and it had the theme song being played in the Rangers' first fight scene instead.
- The heroes are special mission-themed.
- Most of the heroes are started with three Rangers on Core teams.
- The villains are the thieves of the useful resources (Gangler and Vaglass)
- Both have useful items to be used for good (Lupin Collection and Enetron)
- The Lupinrangers can speak in the French language just like Enter.
- Both feature Gold and Silver Male Ranger duo (LupinX/PatrenX and Beet Buster/Stag Buster)
- Both use standard roll calls.
- Both have female Yellows. Excluding ToQger, seasons had no Yellow or a Male Yellow instead.
- Both bring concepts from Power Rangers to Super Sentai.
- The main villains of Go-Busters had similarities to Omni and Venjix from SPD and RPM respectively.
- The never used Hexagon Plan roughly has the same plot as Lupinranger vs Patranger (minus the respective motifs and villian mechanic).
- Both teams have a dress style similar to the Gorengers than modern teams.
- The Go-Busters don't wear spandex (first time since Dai Sentai Goggle V).
- The Lupinrangers wear capes (first time since Mahou Sentai Magiranger).
- Both the Lupinranger and the Go-Busters are the first teams since Timeranger to have rangers that have colored visors.
- The first Sentai Series to not have the Ending Theme, or just replaced by Closing Screens.
- The first season since Ressha Sentai ToQger to not have a Data Broadcast Game whatsoever.
- This series will be the final Sentai series to have a full televised run in the Heisei Era; the following series will be in a similar position to Choujuu Sentai Liveman in that it will run during the transition of reigning emperors. Emperor Akihito will abdicate the throne on April 30, 2019[15] to his son Prince Naruhito, thus beginning a new era of Japan.
- First Sentai series to start with six rangers. Three in each core team.
- This series is similar to Mirai Sentai Timeranger, Mahou Sentai Magiranger, and Uchu Sentai Kyuranger that includes two main red rangers heroes (LupinRed/Patren 1gou, TimeRed/TimeFire, Magi Red/Wolzard Fire and Shishi Red/Houou Soldier), despite having different suit designs, unlike Ninpu Sentai Hurricanger (Kabuto Raiger’s suit color is much different than Hurricane Red) and Shuriken Sentai Ninninger (not only has four AkaNingers, three other AkaNingers are simply additional minor rangers and has the same suit designs as the main AkaNinger (except the shuriken body patterns on the suit)).
- Fittingly, this series ran alongside Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel, despite the extra reds being used in the previous season.
- This is the first Sentai Season to have 2 Red Rangers at the start.
- The series is also themed after the yin and yang:
- Lupinrangers taking back the Lupin Collection (yin) while the Patrangers retrieving the collection (yang).
- The suits are black for the Lupinrangers (yin) and white for the Patrangers (yang).
- Just like the opening of Samurai Sentai Shinkenger and Shuriken Sentai Ninninger, the series' opening spoiled another villain's appearance due to Zamigo Delma's brief appearance (Shinkenger's opening accidentally spoiled the appearance of Juzo Fuwa in his monster form, Ninninger's opening accidentally spoiled the appearance of Ariake no Kata and Masakage Tsugomori, although they were shadowed).
- Each team's name are based on what Sentai they are on:
- Lupanranger's Kaitou: Kairi, Tooma, Umika
- Patranger's Keisatsu: Keiichiro, Sakuya, Tsukasa
- An interview with Gregory Mitchell on TokuNation revealed the 2018 Sentai was originally going to be flight-based. [16]
