Kai Ozu (小津魁, Ozu Kai) is the Red Mage MagiRed (赤の魔法使いマジレッド, Aka no Mahōtsukai Maji Reddo) of the Magirangers. He is the youngest child and third son of the Ozu Family. He uses his proficiency with alchemy and his power over the element of fire to fight evil.

Kai is 17 years old at the beginning of Magiranger^[1].

History[]

Magiranger[]

The youngest of the Ozu siblings, Kai is a Red Mage, a wizard who has power over the Burning Flame Element (燃える炎のエレメント, Moeru Honō no Eremento). Despite being the youngest, he still follows the tradition of his fellow Red Rangers of being the team leader. He's a high school student who is good at soccer and bickers often with his older brother Tsubasa.

During the course of the series, he inherits many of Isamu's techniques, mainly his "Blazing Storm" and lives by his father's saying "Chance is something you make yourself."

His primary attack is Magi Magika Red Fire Phoenix, where his body is engulfed in flame creating a Phoenix image which burns any adversary it flies through. As Red Mage Legend MagiRed (レジェンドマジレッド, Aka no Mahōtsukai Rejendo Maji Reddo), Kai's "MagiBolt" summons a torrent of fire, which is more powerful than Red Fire.

In the special "Tokusei Magiranger Special", Kai drops his MagiPhone into the Mini Garden Spring while dueling with MagiShine and the Goddess of the Mini-Spring gives him the option of getting either a Silver MagiPhone or the Gold GripPhone and so he lies to gain the Golden GripPhone and with it, the ability to become Heavenly Hero KaiShine (天空勇者カイシャイン, Tenkū Yūsha Kaishain). As KaiShine, he wears MagiShine's armor, with a red neck scarf in place of MagiShine's flowing golden cape. However, he accidentally transforms himself into a duplicate of Hades Beast Spider and since he lied to get the Gold GripPhone, its magic is closed off to him. Fortunately, the Goddess of the Mini-Spring is able to use magic to restore him when he pledges to never be dishonest again and his normal MagiPhone is returned to him.

At the end of the series, he becomes a sort of a liaison between the "Surface World" and Infershia. He also now dresses in his father's traditional Magitopian robe and which implies that he will carry on his father's legacy as a great warrior of magic.

Magiranger vs. Dekaranger[]

In the VS movie with Dekaranger, it is shown that Kai carries a picture of Yuka Yamazaki, whom he has a crush on, in his MagiPhone. As the twenty-ninth Red, MagiRed's Red Warrior Spirit was embodied by AkaRed.

In his role call, he briefly changed to GaoRed, HurricaneRed, AbaRed, DekaRed, MagiRed, then back to himself as a demonstration of his power.

A few years later, Kai fought alongside not only his own team, but every single Sentai Ranger in existence, against the Empire of Zangyack when it attacked the Earth in the Great Legend War. After fighting against hundreds of Gormin and their Sugormin commanders, Akarenger noticed the fleet moving towards them. He gathered all the Rangers together and gave them the order to sacrifice their powers to wipe out the first invasion's armada. Kaio — Kai summoning Flagel to challenge Marvelous and Don.

When the Gokaigers landed on Earth, their guide Navi told them to find "A man dressed in black". TV STORY-Ep. 2: The Worth of this Planet This man turned out to be none other than Kai, now 23 years old and calling himself "A magician who has forgotten his magic" and challenged Gokai Red and Gokai Green.

Kai helped Gokai Green realize the "true power of the Magirangers", which turned out to be courage. He revealed to Marvelous that he could only gain the Greatest Treasure in the Universe once he unlocked the Greater Powers of the Ranger Keys. TV STORY-Ep. 3: Changing Courage into Magic

Farewell Space Pirates[]

Kai, alongside his team (MagiShine, MagiMother, and Wolzard Fire were absent), among the majority of the Super Sentai heroes, was caught up in the "Super Hero Taisen" incident which eventually resulted in the Super Sentai teams and Kamen Riders joining forces to defeat both Dai-Zangyack and Dai-Shocker. MagiRed appeared as part of a conference of the first 38 Reds led by Red Falcon, whom addressed the Ninningers and Zyuohgers as the greater Super Sentai pantheon intervened to save them from defeat at the hands of the titanic Gillmarda. Empowering the Combination Nin Shuriken to form Wild Tousai Shuriken King, the first 38 Super Sentai further imbued their successors with the power to perform the Zyuoh Ninnin Super Sentai Burst, destroying Gillmarda with the combined power of all 40 Super Sentai. Chou Super Hero Taisen[]

An iteration of MagiRed was selected to participate in the Chou Super Hero Taisen tournament as a member of Sentai All Red to try and win the right to become the Goriders (with MagiRed as a candidate for Ki-Rider). They faced Rider All Blue in the first round, with MagiRed engaging Kamen Rider OOO Shauta Combo. Finally, Sentai All Red were beaten by Rider All Blue. Super Sentai Strongest Battle[]

Kai joined the Super Sentai Strongest Battle as a member of Flying Team. It’s unknown whether he participated in any of the matches, but his team was eliminated after losing the second round against the Swordsman Team.

Magiranger Sentai Gear Summon — MagiRed summoned by Stacaesar

A copy of MagiRed was summoned alongside his team by Stacaesar through the Magiranger Dark Sentai Gear to attack the Zenkaigers. TV STORY-No. 7-kai! The Prince of the Demon World is Short-Tempered!

A manifestation of MagiRed was summoned alongside his team by Juran through the Magiranger Sentai Gear which allowed Juran and Gaon to wield the MagiSticks and perform a spell that turned the Kudakks into Kudaiters which allowed the Kudaiters to rest in peace. TV STORY-No. 37-kai! Grudge Radish, Deep Roots!

Saber + Zenkaiger: Superhero Senki[]

Though he was seemingly erased alongside his team as a result of Asmodeus’ manipulations, he and, presumably, his corresponding team were restored back into existence once Touma Kamiyama had helped Shotaro regained his passion in drawing out the superheroes that he wants to draw out.

During the climatic final battle itself, he can be seen fighting alongside Gosei Red, Kamen Rider Wizard, Kamen Rider Ghost and Zenkai Magine.

Personality[]

During the series, Kai is initially childish and causes trouble during battles due to his impulsive nature. As the series progresses, he matures gradually and also understands the existence of his father which he refused at first since was still a baby when his father left. But as the leader of his team despite being the youngest, he shows his leadership in troublesome situations, and never gives up as he is the bravest member of the team.

His straightforward and impulsive behavior often leads to him making mistakes. But Kai is kind at heart and very brave for his age. He hates to be babied and wants to be treated like an adult. However, his frequent bouts of impulsiveness and naivete often bar him from being treated like a mature adult. He was most upset about his mother's apparent death at the hands of Dark Magic Knight Wolzard, and swore vengeance for it, until he learned that Wolzard is his father.

In Gokaiger, he is more mature, as he calmly faces Marvelous and Don in his challenge.

Jii Magika: His element magic through Fire, makes him manipulate it in various ways.
Jiruma Magiiro: with his main magical ability: Alchemy, he can turn any object into whatever he wants (example: a vase turn into a soccer ball or the floor turned into a reflective mirror). It's basically similar to transmutation.
Red Fire Slash: a downward flaming slash attack using the MagiStick in sword mode.
Red Fire Screw Attack: by using the MagiPunch, MagiRed then engulf himself with flames thrusting forward like a human bullet and at the same time spinning around, crashing into the enemy with his arms forward with the boxing gloves.
Jii Magika Fire Straight: where he did a forward flaming right punch using the MagiPunch.
Magii Magii Magii Magika Red Fire Miracle Finish: where MagiRed was engulf in flames, jumping in the air then go straight down, shooting out a red magic circle paralyzing enemies in place, before doing a powerful flaming karate chop.
Magii Magii Magika Red Fire Shoot: where he did a flaming roundhouse kick.
Magi Golu Gojika Blazing Storm: where he engulfs himself in a huge torrent of flames, then turn into a flaming tornado damaging anything that comes in his way.
