Judgement Mode (often just called Judgement) was a central element present in both Tokuso Sentai Dekaranger and its Power Rangers adaptation, Power Rangers S.P.D..
In Tokuso Sentai Dekaranger[]
Method[]
After taking down an Alienizer, one of the Dekarangers would formally charge them with their crimes draw their SP License and press the button on top. This would flip open the front of the device, engulfing the villain being judged in a dark dimension with an alternating red cross and blue circle (each labelled S.P.D.). The SP License sends all known evidence and current bio-readings to "the highest court in the galaxy" to make a judgement. Depending on the verdict, the alternating symbols will swiftly land on one of the two symbols are a verdict; the cross means guilty whereas the circle means innocent. A guilty verdict always led to the subsequent death of the criminal. An elite Tokkyou officer may request a Judgement via their Bracerottle. If the charge is made inside a robot that has DekaMachine Pat Signer as a component (Dekaranger Robo's left arm or Super Dekaranger Robo's left pauldron), the process is also projected on its equipped electronic sign.
As explained in Tokuso Sentai Dekaranger: 10 YEARS AFTER, the Universal Supreme Court's universal operates on a far different timescale than the rest of the universe due to a temporal distortion that surrounds the planet where it is located. Eight months for them is equal to 8 seconds in real time for Judgement which is how the Universal Supreme Court is able to perform such a quick verdict despite taken hours at the very least in actuality.
When an authorized judge is present at the scene with an officer, they may directly issue a judgment when the officer activates a Judgement request. MOVIE STORY-Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger in Space
History[]
Judgement Mode was created when S.P.D. came to Earth by Swan Shiratori as a more efficient way of dealing with the worst criminals of all. This is done to circumvent the traditional trial and conviction seen in the early 21st century in favor of nearly instant charging. Although it was never stated why this became necessary, it was heavily implied that it was because of the influx of aliens with superpowers who could easily break out of the courtroom if they wished to.
The very first on-screen use of Judgement Mode was when they judged Diamantian Don Moyaida when Banban judged him for murdering a child. Judgement Mode was always explained by the narrator during the judging itself. In some variation of this phrase, a voice would say "For Alienizers... the Special Police Dekaranger can request the highest court at the end of the galaxy to make judgement."
Only two characters were ever found innocent: Juuzaiann Braidy and Zoinaian Baytonin.
In Power Rangers S.P.D.[]
Method[]
While B-Squad Rangers's Delta Morpher with Judgement works virtually the same against member of the Troobian Empire in S.P.D., one significant difference is that a guilty criminal is only sealed in a Containment Card, instead of being outright executed. The verdict is decided by the device itself after scanning vital signs of the target, and thus, is infallible.
History[]
Judgement Mode was created by Kat Manx. The first use was in the first part of the two-part opening episode "Beginnings" when Kat Manx judged Boom for stealing the last piece of chocolate cake and he was found guilty as charged.
In S.P.D., three characters were ever found not guilty; T-Top, General Benaag and Katana.
Notes[]
- The judgement description used in Dekaranger about the "ultimate court in the universe" was provided by Toshio Furukawa whereas it was whoever was providing judgement in S.P.D.
- The signature bizarre sound effect for Judgment mode was created by taking the sound of a clock ticking, speeding up a dozen times, and then distorting it to add an echo effect.
- Out of all Alienizers and members of the Troobian Empire, only six were never judged for their crimes. In order of appearance; Wojonian Jinche/Wootox, both Space Life Form Browgouls/Dragouls, and Dynamoian Terry X/Delex.
- Whereas the lack of Judgement is unexplained in S.P.D., in the cases of Jinche and Terry X, their crimes were so bad that the Universal Supreme Court had already approved their Deletion approved long before they came to Earth and the Browgouls were monstrous beings whose nature made Judgement unnecessary.
- The reason that Benaag was found innocent of a crime whereas Ben G was not because he was additionally charged with the crime of killing Isinia Cruger and was found innocent because she was still alive and just being held prisoner by Emperor Gruumm. Ben G committed no such crime (since Isinia is a Power Rangers exclusive character) and the scene of him being found guilty was exclusively made U.S. footage utilizing Sentai stock images for the judgement.
- However, Benaag was guilty of a lot other crimes so was contained anyway.
- The S.P.D. symbols on the circle and cross are retained in both versions because they both stand for the respective organizations. In Dekaranger, it meant Special Police Dekaranger whereas it meant Space Patrol Delta in Power Rangers S.P.D.
