Go Go Power Rangers #29 is the twenty-ninth issue of Go Go Power Rangers and the ninth tie-in issue of the Necessary Evil story arc.
Synopsis[]
Tommy steps into his new role as leader of the Power Rangers, but not everyone is convinced he'll be able to lead like Jason did. Meanwhile, Zack, Trini, and Jason are given their first mission as OMEGA RANGERS, and must trust that their friends will be able to handle all of Lord Zedd's threats without them.
Plot[]
The Power Rangers are fighting an evil teapot named Earl Grey Matter and a platoon of Z Putties at a construction site, with Zack saying Kimberly just had to give up caffeine this week. She says she didn’t know that Lord Zedd would keep picking on her, she thought that the whole purse monster debacle would have been enough. Trini does praise her for trying, though suggests since she’s given up caffeine, maybe go full cold turkey and drink sparkling water. Tommy tells everyone his plan, they avoid the Putties and go straight for the teapot. Once they take it out, the Z Putties will retreat. Billy thinks that they should assess potential weaknesses, but Tommy thinks Zedd is just trying to tire them all out and that they need to hurry before the construction site collapses.
The Rangers leap to attack Earl Grey Matter, only for Billy to discover that he has a subdermal layer under his skin. Earl Grey Matter reveals he can become a teapot tank monster called the Gunmetal Kettle, shedding his outer shell and firing evil tea from his cannon that induces a paralytic effect, which Tommy gets hit with and goes limp. Zack, Billy, Trini and Kimberly protect him and help him up, the White Ranger Shield took the brunt of the tea so Tommy can sort of move and recovers after a few minutes. Jason takes over and changes tactics, they need to hit Gunmetal Kettle at long range and he asks Tommy to distract the Z Putties long enough for them to form the Power Blaster. Tommy does so as the Rangers assemble the weapon, Saba hopes that he never has to mount the Power Blaster, but Tommy says that he may have to in desperate times if Jason asks him to take one for the team. Saba points out that Tommy is supposed to be the leader as they watch the Rangers fire the Power Blaster.
Later back at at the Command Center, Tommy gives a report to Zordon about their battle with Gunmetal Kettle and as he predicted, the Z Putties fled after the evil teapot monster was defeated. Lord Zedd seemed to have no motive for the attack other than keeping the Rangers on their toes. Zordon asks how Tommy is feeling after being hit with the paralyzing tea, to which he responds that he still feels a little stiff but it’s nothing a few hours of training can’t fix.
Tommy then feels the need to apologize, he rushed the team into a fight without strategizing like Billy suggested and he almost put the entire team in danger because of his carelessness. Jason tries to cheer Tommy up, saying he would have done the same thing and you never know what a monster is capable of until you fight it. Tommy believes that is all the more reason to be cautious and still feels bad but Zordon says regardless of what happened they won the day and the monster was defeated. The sage then asks Alpha 5 to escort Tommy to the Command Center Infirmary to examine him and make sure that Gunmetal Kettle’s tea does not have any hidden or lingering effects.
Zordon then speaks with Jason alone, asking whose idea was it to use the Power Blaster from a long range position. Jason says it was his decision and confessed that maybe Tommy is a bit overconfident but he’s using tactics that worked well for him in the past when he was the Green Ranger. Zordon owes Jason an apology and he knows that they both were working in secret but admits that the decision to make Tommy the leader is a mistake. While he holds the power of the White Light, which grants him a far stronger connection to the Morphin Grid, he needs to cultivate the skills necessary to be able to wield that power and unlock his full potential to become the leader he needs to be. But Zordon knows that making Jason a Ranger has unleashed the potential within him and hopes Tommy can go on a similar path. Jason knows that Tommy will get there eventually, whispering to himself that everything will be fine.
Elsewhere in the Command Center, Zack is embarrassed and begging Billy to not put in his logbook that they almost were defeated by “a little teapot, short and stout”. Billy says that he has to categorize every monster that they face and while the fight wasn’t their smoothest victory, adjustments and growing pains are to be expected with the new power structure of the team. Trini says that they have fought worse monsters and done way better than they did today. Zack says that he’s worried about Tommy leading them, as he does not seem ready for the job or prepared to lead them in dangerous situations. Kimberly defends her boyfriend and says that he needs time to figure out himself and all of them at the same time so maybe they should cut him some slack. Trini agrees with Kimberly, Billy has logged dozens of monsters that were way worse and this was not one of their biggest disasters. Kimberly reminds Zack that Jason made mistakes too, like the time he went on a solo mission to the Moon.
Zack is still hung up on the fact that they almost lost to a teapot, sarcastically saying what is Zedd going to sic on them next, the Itsy Bitsy Spider? Trini says if that’s the case then they will defeat that just like all the others and it will not matter who is in charge, she knows Zack is uncertain amidst all this change but this isn’t the time to be overly critical of a friend who is trying his best for them. Zack agrees and says he just wanted to be heard on his opinion. Kimberly shifts the topic to how much weirder Lord Zedd’s monsters are recently, something Billy put in his notes for Earl Grey Matter, he wonders if Lord Zedd is losing his touch.
On the Moon, Squatt and Baboo have returned, reporting to Lord Zedd that their mission was a success, they arrived on Earth undetected while the Rangers were distracted by Earl Grey Matter. Zedd tells his minions to stop congratulating themselves for doing the bare minimum and asks if they have it. They hand him a holographic blueprint of Promethea that they stole and he almost admires Grace Sterling’s genius and that he wants what is hidden in one room of its schematic that his vision cannot see through. He orders Finster to create a monster that can burrow underground and is armed enough to handle Promethea’s defenses, asking in a menacing tone if he is at least capable of doing that. Finster says that he will exceed Zedd’s expectations and make a monster so horrible that he won’t be able to stomach how terrifying it will be.
At the Scott residence, Jason is trying to get his father to eat something, but Sam stubbornly refuses. Jason says that the medication is going to make his father feel worse if he doesn’t eat to help absorb it. Sam refuses to drink the protein shake his son made for him and says when he’s hungry he will feed himself. Jason gives up, saying he made sure to stock up on food and he will be gone for a while and he’s not sure his cell phone will be working where he’s going. Sam tells him that he’s not going to bother his teenage son with life or death matters and he would be more helpful NOT doting on him while leaving his laundry on the floor, telling Jason to have a nice trip.
At the Youth Center, Billy and Kimberly are discussing a contest for students to go to a peace conference in Switzerland with Jason, Zack and Trini overhearing. Zack thinks he would only go if it took place in Hawaii and Jason tells Trini it’s time to go. Kimberly asks where the three of them are running off to, with Jason coming up with the excuse that they are going on a scuba trip together this weekend. Kimberly is suspicious since she wasn’t invited and Zack tries to tell her that they told them weeks ago but Billy was busy with a project and Kimberly was going on a date with Tommy. Kimberly says that does sound like her, Trini tells Kimberly that she should get a drivers license so she doesn’t miss future FOMO. The three of them say goodbye and promise that they will be back tomorrow, then go somewhere private to be teleported onto a spaceship.
The trio are in awe of their surroundings as the Blue Emissary greets the three aboard the Spectrum and thanks them for accompanying them on this journey. Jason is uncomfortable, as he lied to his friends and Zordon doesn’t know that they are out in space fighting. Trini brings up that Alpha 5 will detect their morphs if they have to fight, but Blue has devised a way to conceal them from being detected and they have dealt with everything to plan for their arrival.
Zack asks who “they” are, with a robot coming through a door and greeting them, but insists that the humans never touch the ship despite their excitement, as it is a very delicate and intricate machine. Blue introduces their robotic companion XI, the navigator of the Spectrum and their helper much like Alpha 5 was to Zordon. Jason is surprised that just one robot can operate an entire spacecraft, with XI dryly retorting that humans are as illogical as they are emotional. Blue apologizes for the remark, they found XI as a caretaker robot on a place called Eternity Point and gave him numerous upgrades, but a pleasant personality wasn’t one of them. XI says that traveling through the deep regions of space with “inefficient creatures” is as undesirable for him as it is for them, which causes Zack to immediately dislike the arrogant, snarky robot. Trini hears him say “deep regions of space” and asks XI how far away they are going, he says that they are already behind schedule so what are a few more minutes wasted and asks all three of them to follow him to the bridge.
Upon reaching the bridge, XI pulls up a holographic map, noting a cluster of Grid energy spikes in the Khoodjah solar system. They cross several planets so they need to investigate all of them and locate the source. Blue explains that during the end of the Shattering, as reality reformed, people fell through the cracks in the universe and the Grid and this phenomenon caused them to gain direct access to the Grid. This mistake caused individuals to gain immense power, with extremely dangerous and unpredictable abilities. Jason and Trini sum up their mission is one of two options: rescue these people or get into a fight for their lives. XI says they have no time to waste in that case, preparing to power up the Spectrum for a hyperspace jump. Trini thinks this means they will be gone for years given the crossing of multiple solar systems. XI scoffs that humans and their theories on space travel are adorable as the Spectrum can move across space-time in ways she cannot imagine nor does he have intention of ever trying to explain.
While they wait to get to their destination, the trio discuss the possibility of the Mighty Morphin team needing them while they are away, Jason is certain that Tommy and Billy can handle everything but Zack thinks all it will take is one loss for them and it is all over since they can’t even form a Megazord without them. Jason asks what they should do then, let the villains out in space run wild because they could not put the universe back together properly, until they can find replacements for them for the team, it’s on them. Trini asks who could they even choose to replace them, some friends that they know or complete strangers and with such a big responsibility, where would they even know to look to find their replacements? Jason doesn’t know the answer, but says until they find them, they have to have faith in their friends.
On the Moon, Finster shows off his latest creation to Lord Zedd, the Hodgepodge Hedgehog, his ultimate monster weapon to infiltrate Promethea. Lord Zedd is unimpressed, saying that this monster is not vile and terrifying and is just an “ugly stuffed animal made from leftover parts from his previous failures”. Squatt and Baboo whisper that they regret not grabbing snack popcorn while they were on Earth, as based on Zedd’s tone, they would get to enjoy watching their boss eviscerate Finster. Finster tries to calm Zedd down by trying to show him some of Hodgepodge Hedgehog’s features, but the Emperor of Evil bellows that he is a fool and tries to destroy his creation. Hodgepodge Hedgehog grabs Zedd’s Z-Staff, saying he doesn’t like sneak attacks, Finster continues his attempt to explain: his creation is equipped with a variety of tactical defenses and an array of tools for burrowing underground. He also shows Zedd that he has made a nasty surprise for the Power Rangers built into Hodgepodge Hedgehog, which Lord Zedd finds interesting upon inspection and will see if the creature can live up to the task and destroy Promethea.
Back in deep space, the Spectrum arrives at the planet Khoodjah. Zack is morphed and wishes that his parents could see him now as he has come a long way from bussing tables. XI tells everyone to report to the bridge and gives a rundown of the planet that they pinpointed the Grid energy spike, the planet Khoodjah has purple skinned, silver haired humanoids that live on the surface, they are a pre-industrial civilization and are very territorial and aggressive.
Jason asks the Blue Emissary for a clue as to whom they are looking for, with Blue seeing many joined around a great power, guessing it to be an allegiance but with the thoughts of the few casting aside the belief of many. Jason doesn’t understand the cryptic vision and says that they will have to figure that out when they get down there. XI fixes their teleportation coordinates as near to the energy signature as possible as they go down to the planet. Jason asks if everyone has adjusted their suits to the atmosphere, which Zack says he has but he regrets leaving his phone on the ship because he wanted to take pictures of the planet, suddenly realizing he never took photos when they were on the Moon or of the Shattered Grid timeline. Trini sees an angry mob chasing someone who is fleeing for their life, with Jason betting $20 that person is their target as they all slide down the hill. Zack reminds him that there is a chance that they could be helping the bad guys as the story ends on an angry young female Khoodjahn ready to fight back against her attackers.
