Go Go Power Rangers #27 is the twenty-seventh issue of Go Go Power Rangers and the seventh tie-in issue of the Necessary Evil story arc. It is the third and final issue that ties into the events of "White Light," and the chronological first appearance and debut of the White Ranger.
Synopsis[]
NECESSARY EVIL CONTINUES! Trini and Zack meet the one person who can make them OMEGA RANGERS, but are warned about the consequences of joining Jason. At the Tower of Light, Tommy faces off against Lord Zedd, but without his powers will he be strong enough to stop him?
Plot[]
Continuing where the previous issue left off at the Tower of Light, Lord Zedd urges Tommy to take the White Light and claim it as his own. Tommy refuses to do it if it means becoming Zedd’s pawn or becoming like him, betraying everyone he cares about and ruling over a dead scorched planet. Zedd claims that he is a fire that cleanses the universe and though the weak curse his name, those that survive will become stronger. Zedd claims that Tommy is only becoming a warrior again because of him whether he likes it or not. Tommy decides to fight Zedd off without powers to protect the Light from either of them, saying he would rather die than let anyone corrupt it.
Zedd puts Tommy down by saying that he is worthless without his power and still so when he did have power. He fails to see what Rita saw in him when she chose Tommy to be the Green Ranger, all the while zapping and hitting him with his Z Staff. Tommy struggles to his feet, giving Zedd one last warning to leave the Tower of Light so he doesn’t have to really hurt him. Zedd refuses, so Tommy makes one final rush towards him as a last act to stop the evil emperor from obtaining the Light, going for a flying kick, only to seemingly be run through the chest by the bladed bottom end of Zedd’s Z Staff.
A voice tells Tommy that he is so overly dramatic as a light shines and then fades, with the alien White Tiger guardian on top of Tommy and giving him friendly licks to his face. Tommy is confused, with Saba revealing that Lord Zedd was never at the Tower of Light to begin with, this was all a trial of Tommy’s character to see if he was worthy. Saba says only a person who respects all life, even willing to go so far as sacrifice their own to protect it alone without seeking glory or grandeur, is worthy of the being the Light Bearer. Saba will accompany Tommy back to Earth, as he has a world that needs saving after all.
Back in Angel Grove, the Thunder Megazord is in trouble as Nimrod, AC and DC overload its systems and causes a power disruption that makes its reserve energy drain out. Jason tries to get Billy to remotely transmit auxiliary power from the Command Center, but the monster trio are causing too much interference and operational systems are down there. Jason tries one last attempt to turn the tide by powering up the Thunder Saber, but the Thunder Megazord has been slowed down from its power supply dropping, causing the Rangers to miss Nimrod, who strikes them with her staff and then orders AC and DC to give their opponents the “ultimate Power Nap” by zapping the Thunder Megazord again. Kimberly’s control console gets fried and Trini reports that telemetry and weapons systems have gone completely offline, with no other options, Jason orders Zack to get any remaining power to be rerouted to the Thunder Megazord’s teleportation system to retreat. Zack refuses at first but Jason says that they cannot die here and that the Thunder Megazord is one more hit away from being completely destroyed. Zack relents and the Thunder Megazord escapes, with Nimrod, AC and DC laughing in triumph as she vows next time there will be nothing to save them from destruction.
Back at the Command Center, Tommy emerges from the Inter-Dimensional Portal carrying Saba and the White Light. Saba greets Zordon and the sage says that their timing could not have come better given their dire situation at the moment, they need the power of the White Ranger. The helmet of Tommy’s new form appears on the console next to Zordon as he asks Alpha 5 to prepare for the power transfer as they have not a moment to lose. Tommy puts the White Tiger Power Coin into a new Power Morpher as a suit of pure light begins to envelop his body. Zordon says that Tommy will be imbued with power unlike anything he has ever felt before, which will hone his senses and clear his mind, allowing him the chance to become the true champion and leader of the Power Rangers.
Tommy is shocked by the latter statement, as he thought he was just returning to the team, not taking over as Jason is the leader. Zordon says that circumstances have changed with time and they must adapt to them in order to survive the threat of Lord Zedd, the sage gives reassurance that Jason is still a valuable member of the team and he will understand. Alpha 5 instructs Tommy to get onto a table to get ready for the transfer, but Tommy hesitates as he isn’t ready to lead the team, Saba comforts him by telling him that he will always be at his side to guide him as they prepare the procedure.
In the Zord Hangar, Kimberly is talking with Jason and watching “her baby”, the Firebird Thunderzord, getting repaired by Alpha’s automated drones and happy that it is almost in fighting shape again. Jason feels responsible for the Thunder Megazord getting damaged and is suggesting that despite the damage it still has, he should take the Red Dragon Thunderzord out to fight and draw Nimrod and the others away from Angel Grove. Kimberly doesn’t think that will work and he will get his butt kicked three times as fast and not to do anything crazy, they will fight together when they are ready. Jason is concerned that Zordon and Alpha 5 are strangely absent and worries about what will happen to the team while they are gone. Kimberly reasons that she loves her new Zord and loves her suit and has gotten used to wearing the boots, she understands all too well and accepted that what she signed up for has life threatening risks. She knows Jason has “great muscular shoulders” but maybe he should remember not to carry the weight of the world on his own and let his friends and teammates share the burden.
Zack and Trini are checking up on their Thunderzords with Zack wanting to talk about “Jason and the big blue blanket dude” and what to do, he knows Jason told them to keep it a secret but they don’t know what the strange entity wants and maybe they should tell Kimberly and Billy.
His conversation is suddenly interrupted by the Blue Emissary appearing out of nowhere and stating that they are trying to save everything. Blue apologizes for the theatrics and knows that Jason would not approve of them having a conversation with the two and he wanted to spare them the knowledge of their endeavors. The two put their guard up and demand to know what Blue is and what they did to Jason. Blue reassures them that they mean them no harm and they showed Jason a battle erased from time and asked him to take up arms for yet another one as the remade universe is not what it once was. Trini and Zack don’t understand what Blue means, with the latter saying Blue talks “like a broken horoscope” while the former asks Blue to show them this secret battle. Blue cannot do that as the new reality is fragile, comparing it to walking across a frozen lake, they must tread carefully to maintain the structure of reality and the more people they bring into the fold, the higher the risk that reality will shatter once again. Trini and Zack will not take no for an answer as they do not want Jason to face whatever trials he has alone, agreeing to a vow of secrecy if they show them.
Blue finds their friendship and loyalty to Jason enviable and agrees but gives out one last warning, if they go through with this then nothing will ever be the same and they will gain a new perspective, remembering everything in the old universe, a gift that only a select few have. The two will be forever changed in mind and body and will be on their first steps towards a larger universe and a new beginning. Trini and Zack accept the warning and terms of the agreement as they want to help Jason.
The dialogue is shown over the White Ranger being introduced by Zordon to his Rangers, descending from on high in the Command Center to reveal himself as Tommy. Now back on the team, Tommy’s first act as the new leader is to call the Power Rangers to morph and head off into battle.
Sometime later, Tommy is struggling to battle Nimrod, AC and DC in his new Tigerzord, which is in Warrior Mode. Saba is backseat driving, telling Tommy that this fight isn’t going well, to which his protégé remarks that he is driving a giant robot using katas so cut him a break, getting hit again by Nimrod as he has to learn on the fly how to drive. As the monster trio power up for a final attack, Tommy calls his teammates to combine while they are charging up, with Trini, Billy, Zack and Kimberly arriving in their repaired Thunderzords to form the Mega Tigerzord for the first time. They power up its final attack, destroying the monster trio and then celebrate their victory, with Zack wondering if he can get a black Tigerzord, to which Billy asks if he means a Pantherzord. Jason watches their celebration from atop his Red Dragon Thunderzord in Warrior Mode, still concerned about what he is going to do next.
At the Juice Bar, Tommy has a talk with Jason, he is surprised that Jason is so understanding about the change in leadership and even apologetic as he was not informed about Zordon making such a decision until the last minute. Jason tells him not to worry about it, which is a relief to Tommy but he wants him to be honest if he’s actually okay with this, even going so far as to say that Jason is uncomfortable with the choice then he can talk to Zordon about it. Jason reassures him that it really is fine and what‘s done is done, he praises his friend as he is a natural leader, diving head first into the situation with no doubt or hesitation. Jason thinks Tommy is right where he needs to be, to which Tommy thanks him but asks him if he’s where he is meant to be. Jason is still figuring that out and Tommy wants him to promise not to leave anytime soon.
Kimberly asks Ernie for some more fries with no salt and cooked extra crispy. Matt comes to talk to her, as he saw the fight on the news and whispers that he saw the new Ranger and asks if everything is okay. Kimberly starts to tell him she is fine, but Ernie interrupts to let her know her fries are ready and to mention to Tommy that he will find a replacement for the cake that everyone dropped eventually. Things get awkward as Matt realizes that Tommy is back, saying how great that is (when clearly he is still pining for Kimberly). Matt is sure that the two have a lot of catching up to do, and then says that if she ever needs someone to talk to or needs help he will always be around and tells her to be safe as he leaves. Kimberly tries to get Matt to come back, realizing she hurt his feelings but he walks away.
Tommy comes in and admits that his depression during the summer after losing his Green Ranger powers pushed everyone he cared about away , trying to apologize to Kimberly, only to quickly be given a long kiss by her and the two admit they are glad to be reunited.
Outside, Billy confesses that Jason that despite almost dying again in the fight against Nimrod, it feels different this time as the team doesn’t feel like it is being pulled in different directions. Jason asks Billy if he is heading home, but Billy was asked by Alpha to accompany him to a power transfer center that he wants to show him. With the others gone, Jason speaks in private with Trini and Zack, who want to know the details of his secret mission and they did what he asked of them. Jason thanks them for trusting him and thinks that he’s in over his head and needs to tell Zordon, with Zack and Trini saying that isn’t a good idea since he doesn’t remember the old universe. Jason realizes that they regained their memories, with Zack feeling tremors and triggered flashbacks while Trini is amazed that Jason could walk, let alone fight without throwing up. Jason is upset that Blue went against his wishes and this is not their fight, this is his responsibility alone. Trini says that they are coming with him regardless of how he feels. They have fought together since Arrival Day and they are going to help him build this new team he is planning and they will continue to be together. Jason smiles knowing he won’t be alone anymore…
