Gaia Todoroki (凱亜 等々力, Gaia Todoroki) is an individual who was selected to be part of the Universe Warriors as GaoRed (ガオレッド, Gao Reddo).

History

Gaia has been an animal protection officer, working along with his fiancé, Luna who works as a veterinarian to protect rare species. Before Hoeru becomes its tenant, Gaia has already been a regular customer of Cafe Half Century before he went out on a journey along with his girlfriend Luna. However, in their trip, Luna saves Gaia who's going to fall from a cliff, causing her falling off instead. Moments before her death, she was abducted by Demon No.1, but due to her death before the generation of the one-horn demon, it falls to berserk then disappears, and Gaia soon encountered the Gaoranger Ring, forming a Ring Contract with TegaSword and becomes GaoRed. After that, Gaia has become a wanderer, while he's learning different knowledges around the world to master his One Beast One Performance ability, carrying a package of instruments to aid him.

Gaia makes his first appearance in front of Gozyugers, introducing himself as a wandering beast tamer. Joining the fight between the Gozyugers and Onigokku No.1, he transforms into GaoRed and use his One Beast One Performance ability to control GozyuWolf under his command using kalimba, after the No.1 request a rematch, Gaia uses a horse jaw skull to control Sumino to catch the No.1 who competes for heights and wins this round. As the time reaches five o'clock afternoon, the No.1 retreats. Gaia detransform while compliment Rikuo's performance and ability to become a beast tamer. Though he claims he will take the rings from Gozyugers after he defeats the No.1 as he left. At the night, Gaia is playing his flute when he remembers his past with Luna singing the same melody. while promising to take her back.

The next day, Gaia fights along with Gozyugers against Onigokku No.1 again, seeing Hoeru at an advantage when he fights back instead following the rule to be eliminated by No.1, he tries to use his ability to force Hoeru out of battle field, but Hoeru breaks his control by using his WolfDecalibur50 to create a portal to warp through, which attracts Byakuya and shoots Gaia's kalimba off using LeonBuster50, forcing him to fight back using Lion Fang. After a few clash, Gaia tries to control Gozyu Leon using maracas, but Byakuya transforms into Zyuoh Eagle to counter him, cooperating with Gozyu Eagle, the two of them push Gaia into corner until Gaia reaches his package to take out a quena to control them again, but Byakuya counters again by using Zyuoh Eagle's ability to become Zyuoh Gorilla instead, thus Gaia is being heavily damaged but still not yet defeated.

When GozyuWolf defeats Onigokku No.1, the No.1 has become Demon No.1 instead, the one-horn demon Gaia pursuits for long. GaoRed tries to attack, but he was easily defeated. As the No.1 express Luna's hatred towards Gaia, he gets desperated when Gozyugers rushed up to protect him from the No.1's attack. Returning to Tega Sword Village, Gaia has his wounds treated by Ryugi as he explains his past with Luna towards Gozyugers. He leaves as he claims to save Luna again. Playing his flute again, he was reached by Byakuya, who noticed the true will of Gaia as he hears the melody. Feeling Luna's hatred, he now hopes to die with her together as he regrets Luna sacrificed her life to save his, as he hopes to lives together with Luna. Returning to Demon No.1, he transforms into GaoRed as he vows to calm Luna's hatred. GaoRed engages the No.1 shifting from Gao Mane Buster to Falcon Summoner Arrow Mode and then to Lion Fang, but he was being overwhelmed. It was then the Gozyugers realized Gaia is now fighting to hope to calm Luna by sacrificing his life, but his effort is in vain as Demon No.1 becomes giant to kill him. Though Gaia is already to accept his death, Byakuya saves him piloting TegaSword Blue. Byakuya then comes out the cockpit, singing the same song as Luna. Hearing the true feelings of Luna, Gaia's will to free Luna from Demon No.1 has echoed with Gao King, reviving it from Robo Graveyard. With Byakuya and Hoeru's help, Gaia finally reach Luna's heart. Instead of Gaia's wish to die with Luna, Luna hopes him to live on with her effort, accepting Luna's feelings, Gaia pilots GaoKing and defeats Demon No.1 using Animal Heart along with TegaSword Blue Dekaclaw's Star and Lion Duet. After the fight, Gaia gives his Gaoranger Ring to Byakuya as he no longer needs it, leaving to continue his wanderer journey, while admitting Byakuya as the real Beast tamer no.1.

• One Beast One Performance (一獣一奏, Ichijū Issō): Using various musical instruments, Gaia can control and give orders to a beast with the corresponding instrument:
  • Kalimba: Allows Gaia to control wolves.
  • Horse Jaw Skull: Allows Gaia to control horses.
  • Maracas: Allows Gaia to control lions.
  • Quena: Allows Gaia to control eagles.

Weaknesses

• One Beast One Performance Limitations: Although the ability allows Gaia to control various beasts, if he doesn't have an instrument for a specific beast, he is not able to control them. People with a strong are able to resist Gaia's ability, as shown in case of Hoeru being able to break the control with his strong beliefs. Furthermore, if someone could change their animal motif at will, the initial mind control will be nullified, this is shown where Rikuo immediately changes from Zyouh Eagle into Zyuoh Gorilla to counter Gaia's flute. The mind control will also be nullified if the controlled person pass through a warp portal.
• Destroyed Instruments: If an instrument is destroyed for a beast, Gaia will not be able to control the animal that is tied to that specific instrument.

Portrayal

• Gaia Todoroki is portrayed by Yuichi Nakamura (中村 優一, Nakamura Yūichi), who is best known for his previous roles as Kyosuke Kiriya/Kamen Rider Kyoki in Kamen Rider Hibiki and Yuto Sakurai/Kamen Rider Zeronos in Kamen Rider Den-O.

Etymology

• Gaia Todoroki's name can loosely translate to "Roaring Force of Glorious Victory", which references the roaring beast theme of Hyakuju Sentai Gaoranger.
  • "Gaia" is also the name of the personification of the Earth in Greek mythology, befitting of Gaoranger's nature theme and their transformation call "Gao Access! Summon Spirit of the Earth!".

Notes

• Gaia's last pose during his transformation sequence is a reference to the Gaorangers' transformation pose.
• Gaia is the first Universe Warrior with an ability that is not an English word with a kanji reading.
• The melody plays by the Gaia is Hibiki No Shirabe, a reference to Tsukumaro Ogami playing the same melody with his flute. While Sena, the actress of Luna is seen singing the same song, as a reference to Murasaki.
• Gaia is currently the only known Universe Warrior to willingly terminate his Ring Contract (by virtue of him giving up his ring to the Gozyugers).
