Synopsis[]
Because of Obakeyashiki No.1, TegaSword Village has turned into a haunted house! The town is in an uproar with people forced to play ghosts and others terrified. When the Gozyugers storm the House of Terror to restore the town, they find Bouquet and Ribbon there too. Separated from Ribbon, Bouquet trembles in fear of the ghosts, but fatefully reunites with her beloved Rikuo. Their sudden closeness creates a heart-pounding situation...!
Then, the Haunted House No.1 Battle begins. Rikuo, who brings smiles to everyone, rises to the challenge!
Plot[]
Sumino has got a new face
Sumino angrily enters TegaSword Village with a mysteriously changed face and voice. She explains that TegaSword changed them for an undercover investigation she had to do, but asks him why he doesn't change her back. TegaSword doesn't answer, and Sumino finds a note from Ryugi that says he's on a medical leave. Rikuo tries to calm her down and tells her that her new face is nice, which convinces Sumino, who admires her new beauty while looking in a mirror. Rikuo takes the mirror and tells her that her beauty is no match for his own. Sumino decides to keep going despite the change in her appearance.
The entire city being turned into a spooky place by Obakeyashiki No.1
On the next day, Hoeru finds the café adorned with spooky decorations, which gets him scared. Ryugi and Kinjiro explain that the café looked like this when they came in. Suddenly, two ghosts approach the Gozyugers and ask for help, and Hoeru recognizes them as Saori and Aoi, who have been turned into ghosts and can't turn back. Ryugi gets a call from Rikuo, who tells him that the entire city has been redecorated into a haunted house, and denounces that a No.1 Monster must be behind this. Before Ryugi and Kinjiro go out to find the culprit, Hoeru asks to stay in TegaSword Village while they're gone. Ryugi retorts that no one would come to the café with the city in its current state, and that they'll need his sense of smell to locate the No.1. Ryugi and Kinjiro start dragging a frightened Hoeru out of the café.
The trio, now joined by Rikuo, Sumino and Mashiro, come across a haunted house. Mashiro notices Hoeru is afraid and teases him about it, but Hoeru tries to deny it. Suddenly, a puppet resembling a ghost pops out of a well and scares Hoeru. Its owner reveals himself as Obakeyashiki No.1, and challenges the Gozyugers to go through his haunted house and come out of it alive if they want the town restored. Sumino, oddly excited about the ordeal, decides to split the Gozyugers into pairs. She admits that she loves haunted houses and calls them the ultimate form of entertainment, something Rikuo agrees with.
The Gozyugers, split in three pairs, enter the haunted house. Rikuo is impressed at its design, but Hoeru finds it scary, accidentally blurting out that he's afraid. He tries to deny it, but runs out of the house when a ghost scares him and Rikuo. Elsewhere, Ryugi and Sumino find another pair of ghosts, but the latter is still excited. In another room, Kinjiro, Mashiro and BearKuma 50 are cornered by a group of ghosts, and Kinjiro suddenly returns to his old man form. The ghosts run away, calling him a ghost, and Kinjiro misunderstands this and tries to tell them that he's still alive and well.
Ribbon tells Obakeyashiki No.1 the haunted house is not scary
In his office, Obakeyashiki No.1 tries to practice scaring people, but Ribbon boos him and his puppet, catching them off guard. He asks her where's Bouquet, with whom she was supposed to be, and Ribbon says that they must've been separated. She then tells Obakeyashiki No.1 that his haunted house is not scary at all, and tells them how they can make it scarier...
Rikuo starts looking for Hoeru when he hears some crying. He enters a room and finds Bouquet, who's scared of ghosts. He asks her what she's doing in the haunted house, and she tells him that she went with her little sister but they got separated. Rikuo realizes that he doesn't know her name, so she introduces herself, but some hands tear the wall behind her. She runs to Rikuo, who comforts her and tells her that he'll help her get out of the house. While travelling around the house, Rikuo apologizes for Rejecting her offer to go to a summer festival with her, but she apologizes for being so focused on her sister that she ignored him. Rikuo doesn't mind as long as it makes her smile, and Bouquet says that she wants to make her sister smile too. Rikuo is happy to see her happier,, but they're interrupted by a group of people running away. Obakeyashiki No.1 announces that he decided to change his mansion and start attacking the humans within, because that's what truly makes them scared. Three Combatant Ai dressed up like ghosts corner them, and Bouquet signals for them to walk away without revealing her identity to Rikuo. Rikuo tells her he has to go, and gives her a plush of himself before going to fight the No.1
Rikuo finds Obakeyashiki No.1 and Ribbon, and realizes that she's the reason behind the No.1 Monster's change of tactic. He tells Obakeyashiki No.1 that he's disappointed on how his haunted house turned to be, and challenges him for a No.1 Battle. He monitors the Gozyugers, helping Hoeru to fight the Ai and find his way in the house. He directs Ryugi and Sumino, now dressed like an Oni and a witch, to scare a child and his parents. However, Ryugi gives the child a TegaSword toy, and the child finds the experience as fun as its scary. He then directs a young couple into a room, where BearKuma sprays a cold wind at them, and Kinjiro, dressed up like a defeated samurai, scares them. Mashiro and BearKuma find it funny, but Kinjiro doesn't.
Rikuo performs a spooky concert
For the final act, the Gozyugers gather the people in a stage, and Rikuo, dressed up like a vampire, starts singing a song. Bouquet finds him and enjoys the concert like always. She gathers and courage and goes away to look for Ribbon. Rikuo tells Obakeyashiki No.1 that haunted houses are the ultimate form of entertainment, and that he'll help the people visiting it forget of their problems and have fun. He's announced as the winner of the No.1 Battle, so Obakeyashiki No.1 and his puppet order the Ai to attack the crowd. The Gozyugers transform and start fighting them.
While Rikuo fights Obakeyashiki No.1 and the rest fight the Ai, Ribbon arrives in her Ribbon Ayayser, sad that her ideal haunted house was ruined. Rikuo summons TegaSword Blue and starts fighting her. In the middle of the battle, Ribbon is annoyed that everything she finds lovely bores her quickly, and wishes to find the loveliest thing in the world. She also says she hates the human world because it has nothing lovely for her. On the ground, Mashiro and BearKuma freeze and finish off the Ai, and Hoeru uses the Abaranger Sentai Ring to Retransform into AbaRed and attack Obakeyashiki No.1 with the Tyranno Rod. Ryugi and Kinjiro strike him with the TyrannoHammer50 and EagleShooter50, so Obakeyashiki No.1's puppet attacks back with its Ghost Attack. Sumino sneaks up and startles them, and uses Finish Finger to destroy Obakeyashiki No.1 and free his victim. Obakeyashiki No.1 and his puppet turn into ghosts before exploding.
Meanwhile, the battle between TegaSword Blue and Ribbon Ayayser continues. Bouquet finds them and warns her sister about TegaSword Blue. Ribbon ignores her and tells her older sister that she won't be a good girl anymore. That leaves her open, so Rikuo attacks her Ayayser. In response, Ribbon uses her Big Ribbon to destroy the buildings surrounding them, so Rikuo attacks her with Leon Gatling Burst. Ribbon tries to escape her damaged Ayayser, but to her horror, the escape portal was destroyed in the attack, and she's ejected out of it. Immediately after, Fire Candle arrives in King Candelor and starts fighting with Rikuo over hurting Ribbon.
Ribbon's death
Bouquet finds Ribbon, and to her horror, notices that her little sister is starting to fade out of existence. She tries using her own energy to revive her, even though it would cost her own life. Ribbon thinks to herself that Bouquet is stupid to try to revive her even though Ribbon tricked her, but starts feeling a warmth. She realizes that the love Bouquet showed to her was the loveliest thing she could ever want. She stops Bouquet from wasting her energy and apologizes for how she behaved before. She creates one last Ribbon and hands it to Bouquet before disappearing. Bouquet starts crying, and swears revenge on TegaSword Blue.
Bouquet learns that Rikuo is GozyuLeon
Meanwhile, Fire Candle strikes TegaSword Blue with the Candeluxe Sword, smashing his head open and forcing Rikuo out of him. Bouquet notices the commotion and aims her gun, but when the dust settles, she's horrified to find none other than Rikuo! Fire Candle tells her to avoid him, and Rikuo hears it and realizes that Bouquet is a Bridan. Memories of Rikuo making her happy and GozyuLeon and TegaSword Blue fighting her flash in Bouquet's mind, but all of her good memories of Rikuo disappear when she remembers Ribbon's death. In a mix of emotions, Bouquet falls on her knees and screams in sorrow.

Elements/Homages to Super Sentai[]
Gozyuger Episode 40's Title Card
- The title of the episode contains the word Explosive (莫大 Bakudai), derived from AbaRed's rollcall phrase (Explosive Energy! AbaRed! (
元 気 莫 大 !アバレッド Genki Bakudai! Abareddo)), in reference to Hoeru using the Abaranger Sentai Ring. - Since this episode marks the first appearance of Kohaku Shida playing Sumino, the episode makes various references to her role as Oni Sister in the form of the cast making reference to Oni. At the start of the episode, Sumino does the horns that Haruka does when doing her rollcall and later in the episode she asks why Ryugi is dressed as an Oni, with the stinger sound effect used in Donbrothers be played during those scenes.
Errors[]
Ryugi wearing an Oni costume and then a Frankenstein costume and Kinjiro rejuvenated
- Several signs of reshoots are present in the episode, especially in certain scenes featuring Ryugi and Sumino where the two have obviously been composited onto previously-recorded on-set footage via green screen. In addition, during the scene when the group transforms together, Ryugi can be seen wearing a Frankenstein costume instead of the Oni one he was wearing before. It is likely that the Frankenstein costume was a remnant from the original cut of the episode, since the Oni costume was made to tie into a Donbrothers reference.
- In that same scene with Ryugi, Kinjiro can be seen young again even though he had reverted into his old form for a while from running out of eggs. However, it could be implied that he was rejuvenated off-screen sometime in-between.
