Friends! Why Did You Do This!? (友よ君達はなぜ!? Tomo yo Kimitachi wa Naze!?) is the first episode of Choju Sentai Liveman.

Synopsis[]

The three traitorous Students Kenji Tsukigata, Rui Senda and Gou Omura come back from Outer Space in the name of the Armed Brain Army Volt to begin their attack on the Earth.

Plot[]

The United Nations have gathered the best and brightest students of the world on Academia Island to help build what will become the first orbital space base. However, one day in class, three students loudly and indignantly declare that they are tired of working on the space base.

Later that night, Yusuke Amamiya, Jou Ohara, and Megumi Misaki discover their friends Mari Aikawa and Takuji Yano are entering a chamber to test out the fortification space suits. The machine explodes and blasts them out of the window. The trio of Megumi, Jou, and Yusuke shout after them, but miraculously, the suits protected Mari and Takuji.

Nearby, the group of five witness a space ship landing in the woods. They approach, and watch as the three students from class board the space ship - though not before Tsukigata brandishes a pistol and shoots Mari and Takuji dead. Megumi mourns Mari in the rain, Jou clutches Takuji, and Yusuke covers Takuji's body with his jacket. The evil trio discard their Academia patches and the strange ship flies away. In the bushes, their professor Doctor Hoshi watches Jou cry out Takuji's name.

The space ship boards an orbital base.

Two years later in the spring, Doctor Hoshi announces the students who have been selected to pilot the Space Adademy ship: Hideo Izuka, Mary Charles, Naoki Fujita, Sen Mei Kim, Anna Carse, Gregory Harms, Misa Yokoyama, Paul Miyama, Ho Ami, and Toshiya Yamauchi. The band plays in celebration as the students celebrate their success. Despite being present and in uniform, the trio of Yusuke, Jou, and Megumi are conspicuously not selected but not bothered, either. At Cape Hope, Yusuke, Jou, and Megumi leave flowers on Takuji and Mari's graves. Yusuke promises to avenge them. Doctor Hoshi visits to pay his respects. Megumi asks him to place their departed classmates' photos aboard the spaceship as well, and he agrees.

At the day of the launch, Doctor Hoshi is in mission control. Yusuke, Jou, and Megumi come to witness the blast off in their civilian outfits. However, what should be a happy occasion is interrupted when a squadron of red fighters appear and destroy the Space Academy ship with volleys of lightning.

The Academy Ship crashes in a nearby city. Doctor Hoshi is crushed amidst the rubble in mission control. Yusuke takes Jou and Megumi into the crux of the battle as the fighters bombard the nearby facilities and buildings. The trio splits up, with Megumi biking away, but a series of explosions and bombardments reunites them.

A single flower blooms amidst the wreckage as Yusuke helps Megumi up from the wreckage. Jou asks who could have done this, and watches as a trio of figures step out of a fighter wearing strange sci-fi attire. Yusuke recognizes Tsukigata among them as the man who killed their friends. Tsukigata crushes the blooming flower beneath his boot.

Yusuke angrily confronts Tsukigata, who admits that the three of them forfeited their humanity that day two years ago. In a flashback, the trio meet and pledge loyalty to Great Professor Bias aboard the Space Brain.

Tsukigata pronounces them as the Brain Army Volt, and his new name is Doctor Kemp. His comrades name themselves Doctor Mazenda and Doctor Obular, and they announce their plan to conquer Earth under a technocracy. Doctor Mazenda attacks the trio with her finger gun. Yusuke isn't sure what just happened as Mazenda laughs and Doctor Kemp turns into Beauty Beast Kemp. Jou calls Kemp a monster, and Kemp responds with a barrage of energy blasts and explains that they received this power for studying beside Professor Bias.

Yusuke reveals that they've also been preparing and explains that they are the warriors who protect al lliving things on top of avenging their comrades. The trio transform into the Livemen. Yusuke flaunts that these suits are different compared to the ones they used two years ago. Frustrated, Kemp has his Battle Soldier Jinmers attack the Livemen. The Liveman brandish their weapons and counterattack. Even as the Liveman dismember the Jinmer, their body parts still remain functional, and the Liveman struggle with their overwhelming numbers. Doctor Kemp attacks Yellow Lion and Doctor Mazenda attacks Red Falcon and Blue Dolphin with her various body-part-themed weaponry. Before the Doctors can finish off the Livemen, however, Land Lion rushes to the battlefield and knocks down the Doctors. Red Falcon tells Blue Dolphin it's time to activate their own mecha.

Doctor Kemp calls in more Bofler Fighters, who chase Land Lion into a valley, but Land Lion emerges from the other side and bites the Bofler fighters. Land Lion covers for his two companions with a Lion Missile barrage.
