Logo-supersentaiThis article is about a series entry (the "46th") in the Super Sentai series.

Avataro Sentai Donbrothers (暴太郎戦隊ドンブラザーズ Abatarō Sentai Donburazāzu, Avataro Squadron Don Brothers) is a Japanese Tokusatsu-drama and the 46th installment in Toei Company's Super Sentai Series. The series premiered on March 6, 2022, joining Kamen Rider ReviceIcon-crosswiki in the Super Hero TimeIcon-crosswiki line-up after the finale of Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger. After the finale of Revice, Donbrothers was joined by Kamen Rider GeatsIcon-crosswiki on September 4, 2022. The series would later end in February 2023, being replaced by Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger in the Super Hero Time block.

The series' theme is based on the legend of Momotarō and virtual reality. Because of this, many of the show's graphics are styled to resemble traditional Japanese watercolor brush paintings and the series makes more extensive use of CGI than past productions.

The series was dubbed in South Korea as Power Rangers Donbrothers (파워레인져 돈브라더스 Pawoleinjeo donbeuladeoseu).

Production[]

Filming[]

Filming wrapped late December.

Post Production[]

For special effects, backgrounds were generated using StageCraft for giant robot battles.[1]

The trademark for the series was filed by Toei Company on November 2, 2021.[2]

Plot[]

"Heroes unlike those you've ever seen before! These five are based on the Tale of Momotaro, as a dog, pheasant, monkey, and oni join together to fight against other demons! Using the legendary powers of the Avataro Gears, they load an avatar to fight as they Avatar Change! They fight against the dreaded Oni, demons born from human desires, and the demonic organization that supports them, the Noto! When a high school student named Haruka Kito gets mysterious powers, she is told by a man named Jin Momoi that she must find his son, Taro Momoi, and swear loyalty to him! But what exactly does this all mean? And who are these mysterious allies he keeps mentioning she will find? The story of the Donbrothers will unravel as we journey into this wondrous festival together!!"
―Narrator[src]

A man called Jin Momoi finds a baby inside a peach-shaped capsule whom he names Taro and raises. 21 years later, mysterious monsters called the Hitotsuki begin appearing when humans overcome with their inner desires are taken over by spirits infused with powers related to the Super Sentai from the past. Taro, and four other individuals selected by Jin; Shinichi Saruhara, a smart but eccentric young man, Haruka Kito, a high schooler manga artist, Tsubasa Inuzuka, a wanted fugitive, and Tsuyoshi Kijino, an ordinary salaryman begin fighting the Hitotsuki and saving their hosts as the Donbrothers. They are later joined by Jiro Momotani, who was also found in a capsule as a baby and raised in a rural area, and aspires to become a hero.

Also standing in their way are the Noto, elusive and ruthless individuals from a higher plane who stop the Hitotsuki by sealing their hosts in another dimension, unlike the Donbrothers who use their powers to rescue them, and the Juto, strange and powerful creatures who are a threat to both humans and the Noto. The Donbrothers also count on the secret help of Kaito Goshikida, the owner of the coffee shop Donbura who transforms into Zenkaizer Black.

Notes[]

  • According to producer Shinichiro Shirakura, the choice to use CGI Rangers was to surpass the limitations of live-action suits and allow more creative freedom with design and what they can do with the characters.[15] He also wanted a team that broke the stereotypical personalities of the specific colors and gender roles, such as pink being male.
  • Toshiki Inoue was chosen as head writer because Shirakura felt he could fulfill the requisite of breaking down stereotypes and do a subversive take on Super Sentai. Inoue wanted a series that did not teach children about totalitarian ideology and that freedom and diversity are important to everyone.
  • During the planning stages of the show, the Toei production staff initially were going to do an adaptation of Journey to the West, but changed their minds upon realizing past Sentai seasons such as Dairanger and Kakuranger already used elements of the story in terms of motif. So the staff selected the Momotaro folktale as the main inspiration for the story.[16] The only remnant of the idea for the original concept they placed in the actual series was Don Doragoku, the Son Gokū-themed Ranger.
  • The term "Avataro" is a combination of development titles the staff debated either using "Avatar Sentai" or "Momotaro Sentai".[17]
  • Donbrothers is the first series to have the "-brothers" suffix in its title.
  • The Avataro Sentai Donbrothers being based on the legend of Momotaro is acknowledged in-universe by Jin Momoi in order for him to make a good point. He brings up the point that one of the Donbrothers was based on an Oni who are the antagonists of the legend itself with himself explaining to both the team and the Noto Trio about his belief that the Don Clan had incorporated that particular idea in order to convey a message. The message being that there are no such things as "Permanent" allies or enemies. Tvicon TV STORY-Don 47: DonNo Conference
