Don 39: Unexpected Button Pressing (たなからボタンぽち Tanaka-ra Botan Pochi) is the thirty-ninth episode of Avataro Sentai Donbrothers. It features the only appearance of DonKiller and DonKillerKiller, and the final appearance of Zenkaizer Black.
Synopsis[]
While Kaito is away, Haruka and the others decide to clean up Cafe Donbura. While cleaning, Jiro finds a button that shines in seven colors and presses it. Then, an android called "DonKiller" who looks like Taro comes flying from the sky. According to the facilitator, DonKiller was created for a certain purpose. Are the Donbrothers in danger of collapsing?!
Plot[]
Kaito narrates as the Donbrothers are under attack from a strange doppelgänger of Taro that December 4th, 2022 could be the day when the Donbrothers will face their end as they struggle to survive against their relentless foe. Kaito decides to go back and explain how things led up to this…
Earlier that morning, the Donbrothers sans Taro were going to surprise Kaito by cleaning up Cafe Donbura as a thank you for treating them to free food at the cafe. Kaito is away at a meeting to negotiate for his third photo book and Jiro tells everyone that he’s heading back home to the country for Mr. Terasaki, his foster father, to plan a surprise birthday party for him.
Haruka stumbles upon a small safe hidden in the supply storage under the counter and the group is curious to what it contains. They input their birthdates as the pincode on the keypad and it opens, revealing a button that explicitly is labeled “DO NOT PRESS”.
They encourage Jiro to push the button and he does so, with a light labeled “Attacking” glowing which causes the earth to shake and loud sirens to blare. Kaito returns and Jiro passes off the button to Tsuyoshi as he makes a break for it to avoid getting blamed and to leave for his trip. Kaito wonders what is going on and upon seeing the button is angry at all of them for pressing it…
Taro prepares another load of packages for delivery at Shirokuma Express when the earth violently shakes…
The earthquake is also at Cafe Donbura, Kaito only says that “DonKiller” is coming…
Taro sees a green streak of light falling down which causes a massive explosion when it hits the ground. When the dust settles, a figure is revealed who looks exactly like Taro but wearing a green uniform. Taro tries to ask what the duplicate is, only to blasted by a huge laser from its mouth that his quick change into Don Momotaro can just barely block. Taro tries to fight back but the double effortlessly blocks his ZanglaSword and proves to be physically stronger than him, flinging him off into the air and forcing Taro to use an invisible door in the sky to retreat.
Taro meets up with his companions and gets an explanation from Kaito, the figure he encountered was DonKiller, a combat android built by the Don Clan with their advanced science as a contingency plan if the Donbrothers ever went rouge or strayed to the path of evil. Its sole purpose is to seek out and completely destroy the team. Kaito was given the responsibility as administrator of the team to manage summoning Don Killer if necessary, but the team is now responsible for unintentionally activating him.
Elsewhere, Sononi is being flirted on by a man named Shinnosuke, only for his girlfriend Tamaki to catch him cheating on her. He runs away and Tamaki is upset and chases him until she trips and then she cries for the heartbreak he caused her.
Tsubasa arrives and sees Sononi is still trying to understand love but doing so by hurting someone else. Tsubasa thinks she will never truly understand love if she continues in this way, but she throws back that Natsumi is still in the Forest of Slumber so his love is at a dead end. Tsubasa believes that no matter how far Natsumi is, they are still connected and will never have their love broken. Tamaki despairs and desires for someone to look at and pay attention to her, becoming the JAKQ Hitotsuki, Jakki. Tsubasa becomes Inu Brother and the rest of the Donbrothers teleport to his location soon after, this unfortunately activates DonKiller’s tracking sensors and he flies to their location.
The gang fight off the Hitotsuki like usual and Sononi is about to equip her armor to try to destroy Jakki, when DonKiller lands and Jakki escapes with all of them distracted. DonKiller fires lasers from his eyes, causing an explosion and knocking the Donbrothers off the bridge that they were standing on, then relentlessly pursues and attacks them in an intense battle. After the team is beaten and Taro is surprised to find himself outmatched and overpowered, he orders his team to run away.
The group splits up and Tsubasa hides in a parking lot, only to be immediately found by DonKiller and thrashed around like a rag doll. The remaining four regroup under a tunnel, with Tsuyoshi asking Taro what they should do, with him giving a surprising response: make peace with their lives by getting their affairs in order and live their best lives on their last day and prepare for the end. They cannot hide, run nor fight against Don Killer so it is best to face certain death with dignity. The rest are in disbelief upon hearing this as Taro walks away.
Taro decides to spend his final moments doing what he loves, delivering packages to bring joy to everyone. He is interrupted by Sonoi, who wants to try and help. He knows that DonKiller was designed to attack the Donbrothers, so the Noto could provide an opportunity to destroy him since he wasn’t programmed to deal with them. Taro refuses to get Sonoi involved, stating that this is their problem and to stay out of it as he drives away. Sonoi’s pride rejects Taro’s decision as he feels he is the only one who should have the honor of defeating Taro.
At Cafe Donbura, Kaito is begrudgingly impressed that the group guessed the PIN code of his safe on the first try, when DonKiller unexpectedly enters the cafe. The android sits down and looks at the menu, requesting a banana parfait, and Kaito calmly brings it to him. DonKiller quickly devours the parfait, which Kaito had secretly contaminated with mustard as a “feeble resistance” to slow down the android, whatever happens next is out of his hands.
DonKiller leaves the cafe and resumes his mission, but begins to malfunction because of the mustard contaminating his systems. The Noto show up in armored form to try to defeat the android, but because of its malfunctioning systems, DonKiller identifies the Noto as Donbrothers and attacks them. He repeatedly slaps Sonoza in the face at high speed and then fires eye lasers at the trio, with Sonoi immediately ordering a retreat and to never speak of this incident to anyone or mention it. DonKiller retunes his systems to purge the mustard from its body and resumes functioning properly.
Kaito pays Jin a visit, who greets the “True Hero”, having not seen him in a while. Kaito gifts Jin his two photo books and asks for advice on how to stop DonKiller, if nothing is done then the Donbrothers will be slain for no real reason. Jin has heard of another android called DonKillerKiller…
In Hanaka, Jiro has returned to his foster father’s home and gets ready for the birthday party, carrying bags of gifts and party supplies.
Tsuyoshi returns home to Miho and sadly hugs her, telling how much he loves her and how every moment she had with him made him a happy man. Unable to bear his sadness, he then leaves and writes a goodbye letter in a park. He tells her he has prepared a life insurance policy so she won’t struggle financially and to fulfill her dream of opening her own salon. Before Tsuyoshi can finish the letter, DonKiller finds him. Tsuyoshi suddenly feels a surge of courage and refuses to just lay down and die, transforming and facing DonKiller head on, only to be grabbed by the legs and thrashed around.
Tsuyoshi fortunately survives his encounter, pushing himself in a wheelchair at a hospital as both of his legs are broken. He sees Tsubasa in the same room as him and both try to hide their identities by claiming to have fallen down the stairs to explain their injuries.
Shinichi is at the shore watching the waves, preparing one final haiku about a sinking ship under a starry night sky. DonKiller finds him and Shinichi states that throughout his life, he has had no regrets, transforming into Saru Brother and trying to use his super strength to match Don Killer, only to be grabbed by the arms and thrashed about. Shinichi ends up surviving as well, but both his arms are broken. The three Rangers wallow in painful misery in their hospital beds sharing a room.
Back in Hanaka, Jiro has finished decorating and placed Mr. Terasaki’s birthday cake on the table. He wonders why his father is running so late and finds another button similar to the one in Cafe Donbura which also is labeled DO NOT PRESS. Jiro once again ignores the warning, presses it and another siren blares…
Haruka surrounds herself in the calm serenity of nature, using her final moments to make a fantastic manga that people will remember her for forever. Taro meets with her and reads it, proclaiming that her work is dull. DonKiller finds them both and Taro tells Haruka not to die before she can make a good manga as both transform and make their last stand. The android blocks their weapons and even scares them a little when he bites down on the ZanglaSword to block an effort to decapitate him. Kaito arrives as Zenkaizer Black to try and help but his Geartlinger’s bullets have no effect. When the dust settles, Don Killer unhinges his jaw to deploy a cluster missile. Kaito tells Haruka and Taro to run, with the missile splitting off and bombarding them from multiple angles.
The three Rangers fall and lay on the ground, dreading that they are about to die, when suddenly a red streak of light crashes into the ground. Another android in a red uniform appears from the dust of the impact, which Kaito identifies as DonKillerKiller, who resembles Shinichi. Kaito flashes back to his discussion with Jin, who explained that DonKillerKiller was a system that the Don Clan devised if DonKiller went out of control or ended up in evil hands. Jin says he only heard it from rumors but it could help. The two androids engage each other in combat, trading blows and firing their laser eyes in a duel of beams.
The Rangers give them a wide berth to avoid the explosions and stumble upon Jakki wandering in the same area as them. Jiro is doing sit-ups when the Ryukonogeki appears and the three hospitalized Rangers are able to return to fighting shape by healing their broken bones through sheer force of willpower. All of them teleport to Taro’s location, who equipped his GolDon armor offscreen, Jiro decides to help Taro while Shinichi and Tsuyoshi are shocked by DonKillerKiller’s resemblance to the former.
Jakki uses constructs of playing cards to attack the Donbrothers, but Jiro and Taro counter with a Ryusoulger Avatar Change into Ryusoul Gold and GolDon Ryusoul Red to destroy the cards and finish Jakki with a Festival End/Lightning Dragon Flash combo attack. Jakki becomes Jakking and the Donbrothers become Goldon Onitaijin and Toradoragonjin, with Jakking using Card suit constructs to attack the two robos. After knocking her down, the team becomes Toradora Onitaijin Kiwami and purifies Jakking with the DonBros Fantasia Supreme. Tamaki wakes up on the bridge, confused as to what happened but otherwise alright.
The battle between the two Killers intensifies until they blast off into space, continuing their intense exchange of lasers and powerful blows. Kaito believes that they will fight for as long as they can into the endless future.
Back in Hanaka, Mr. Terasaki is arriving home as Jiro ominously sings Kagome Kagome while origami paper is strewn across the floor. Mr. Terasaki announces he is home, with Jiro stopping what he was doing to happily greet him. The origami he was folding is revealed to be a penguin…
