Don 38: Nonsensical Cooking (ちんぷんかんクッキング Chinpunkan Kukkingu) is the thirty-eighth episode of Avataro Sentai Donbrothers.
Synopsis[]
Tsuyoshi wants to invite Tsubasa to a restaurant with the reward for selling him to the police. Tsubasa realizes that Tsuyoshi has changed and follows his wishes. During a meal at a restaurant that Taro and the others have been invited to, he is warned about manners by chef Takamura. Tsubasa then complains about Takamura's cooking. At the suggestion of Noriko, a gourmet critic who was there, the two decide to compete in cooking.
Plot[]
A restaurant critic named Noriko Ida is dining at a luxury restaurant and despite enjoying her meal, she is bored with the same food she eats regularly and desires to eat something extraordinary. This transforms her into the Denziman Hitotsuki, Denshiki and after a few moments she suddenly reverts back, feeling full. Noriko wonders why she blacks out and suddenly feels full as she leaves the restaurant, having unknowingly absorbed the patrons and employees of the restaurant.
The following day, Tsubasa reports his findings about the Juto to Inspector Kitou at the police station. He also explains he has no idea how he escaped the Forest of Silence, he just woke up in a field and assumed that someone rescued him. Yuriko gives him her contact information to call for any further updates on the Juto as Tsubasa leaves, with Yuriko checking him out and blushing.
Tsubasa is elated as he narrates that he is no longer a fugitive on the run as he passes by a crossed out wanted poster. He feels nervous when a police officer comes out, but the officer gives a friendly hello and says that it is a wonderful day instead of chasing him. But that changes when a wanted poster of the Fake Tsubasa is put up and the real Tsubasa returns to his ways and flees from the officer.
Tsuyoshi sees Tsubasa from across the river, remembering when he was attacked and force fed and cautiously approaches him. He is relieved that Tsubasa is “back to normal” and offers to treat him to a meal at a popular new restaurant using the reward money from capturing him. Tsubasa at first declines, even though Tsuyoshi says Miho came home and he forgives him, but Tsubasa thinks something is off about him upon seeing his creepy smiling.
Upon going to Tsuyoshi’s apartment, Tsubasa’s concerns are confirmed when he sees him talking to “Miho” the china doll. Thus, out of worry for him, he decides to go to the restaurant and insists that Tsuyoshi leaves the doll at home and hugs him out of pity.
In another part of the city, Jiro is seeing off Rumi at the bus stop as she heads back home, thanking her for caring for him while he was sick. Rumi reminded Jiro that she left some more of her home cooked food in his fridge. She boards the bus and thinks about how “high strung” Jiro was during her stay and is embarrassed when he chases after the bus and is continually waving and shouting goodbye to her.
The Donbrothers meet up at the restaurant and wonder what the occasion is, but Tsuyoshi simply wanted to treat everyone. When the subject of Miho comes up, he tries to leave to get the doll so everyone can “meet her” but Tsubasa stops him. Tsubasa wonders how Natsumi is doing, but Tsuyoshi barbs him that Miho belongs to him. Tsubasa calmly agrees while pitying him but Tsuyoshi seems intent on starting a fight over their lover. Dangerous Jiro suddenly interrupts Taro’s meal and wants to fight outside with him. Shinichi and Haruka argue about Sonoza and she barbs him about his crush on Sononi.
The tensions escalate as the group argues, Tsubasa tries to reason with the now crazy Tsuyoshi that “Miho” is a doll and he has no intention of stealing her away from him, which Tsuyoshi sadly denies in his delusions and takes offense to. Dangerous Jiro knocks over Taro’s glass of wine as he gets more aggressive and Shinichi tries to defend his interest in Sononi by saying that he simply wants to bestow his philosophy to the Noto.
The argument gets so loud that the head chef Takamura heads over to their table to shout at them to be silent. Takamura then criticizes their lack of respect and table manners and politely asks them to leave the restaurant. Tsubasa stops him and says that Takamura has some nerve criticizing his friends when his cooking is terrible. Tsubasa, having a sophisticated flavor palette, notes that the steak has too much salt and it dried the meat of its juices, a proper steak would be tender and flavorful. Takamura is offended by these remarks and the two begin listing off ingredients for spaghetti carbonara and napolitan in a competitive manner.
Noriko overheard this and applauds their competitive spirit, proposing a cooking contest between the two with her as the judge. Tsuyoshi gets the bill and finds that he cannot afford to pay the total, passing out after trying to ask Tsubasa to help him with the cash problem.
At Makoto’s apartment, Tsubasa is practicing his cooking with spaghetti carbonara and an omelet. Taro discusses with him about the Juto incident and asks about his past. Tsubasa explains that his father was a chef and even taught him the fundamentals of cooking, but he wasn’t home much because he was also a fugitive from the law. He wants to make an omelet for the contest and asks the team to try his. Everyone loves it but Taro thinks a simple omelet will not sway the judge. Tsubasa knows this as the competition is a prodigy in the culinary arts and Noriko is hailed as the “devil’s tongue” among food critics for her strict critique of restaurants. Tsubasa knows he needs the highest quality of eggs to win, which Shinichi volunteers to find and purchase.
Back at the restaurant, Takamura also plans on making an omelet while Tsuyoshi is forced to scrub floors to pay off his debt to the restaurant. Much like Tsubasa, Takamura recognizes his competitor’s talent and asks Tsuyoshi to fetch him the finest quality eggs for his recipe.
Shinichi gets the last dozen eggs from an organic raised chicken farm, only for Sonoi and Tsuyoshi to try and take them. The three then morph and try to capture the eggs from one another and end up breaking all of them. The farmer gets angry at them for wasting food like morons and the three beg forgiveness for their behavior. Fortunately, the farmer has three dozen eggs that he planned on taking home, but gives them to the three in exchange for never returning to his farm.
The competition starts and the consensus is both dishes are delicious, leaving the Donbrothers in a state of bliss. Noriko on the other hand is not impressed and bored by the same flavors, her desire to eat something new overtakes her and she once again transforms into Denshiki. She ends up absorbing Tsubasa and Takamura before running off.
Tsubasa finds himself in the Hitotsuki’s body, which is a pocket dimension forest that contains the other people that Denshiki absorbed into herself.
The Donbrothers are transformed and quickly try to rescue Tsubasa. Inside the Hitotsuki, the trapped people beg for food as they are starving. Tsubasa finds a strange blue squash and asks everyone to scavenge for more to make a dish out of. Back outside, the fight gets more intense as the Noto Trio interfere and Sonoza unseals Murasame to fight alongside them. Meanwhile, Tsubasa and Takamura try to figure out how to prepare the squash to feed the hungry people. Taro breaks out his GolDon armor and everyone frantically clears out of the way to avoid getting hit by the Festival End attack, allowing him to defeat Denshiki and free the absorbed people including Tsubasa.
Dissappointed, the Noto Trio leaves but Don Murasame screams in pain as he goes berserk from an energy surge and Mother tells him not to fight his power but embrace it. Don Murasame becomes Black Onitaijin again and the Rangers become Toradora Onitaijin to deal with him. However, the surging power within Black Onitaijin overwhelms them with fierce attacks, so they become Toradora Onitaijin Kiwami to match his strength. Mother warns Murasame to be careful, but he is overwhelmingly blasted by the DonBros Fantasia Supreme. Don Murasame reverts back into the Ninjarksword and retreats, with Mother praising him for trying and to get some rest.
A purified Noriko stumbles into the restaurant, weak from hunger as everyone else tries the prepared blue squash dishes that Tsubasa and Takamura made. Noriko tries some and is overjoyed by the new sensation of flavor that the dishes have, left in a state of bliss from the experience.
Later that evening, Sonoi has delivered the eggs to the master of the oden cart alone and is given a boiled egg in broth. Upon eating it, Sonoi is teleported to Ideon and is in a blissful state from the delicious egg. Taro is invited to the park by Jiro to try Rumi’s Vegetable Stew and he manages to fly into the air in a blissful state upon eating it.
Back at his apartment, Tsuyoshi returns to “Miho” the doll… until the Crane Juto returns to him and resumes her role as Miho Kijino, causing him to discard the doll upon seeing her.

This dish was created in restaurants due to post-war Japan not having greater access to actual tomato sauce because of supply issues in the aftermath of WWII.
