Don 27: Duel for Real (けっとうマジマジ Kettō Majimaji) is the twenty-seventh episode of Avataro Sentai Donbrothers. It features the first death of Sonoi, who will return 5 episodes later.
Synopsis[]
Sonoi challenges Taro to a one-on-one duel, which is set in three days. To prepare for the showdown, Sonoi trains with Sononi and Sonoza. Meanwhile, Taro is working as usual and didn't prepare for anything in particular. On the day of the duel, Haruka, Sononi, and the others wait, praying for their respective victories, but neither Taro or Sonoi made their return.
Plot[]
Taro and Sonoi are standing in a quarry and preparing for their fated duel. Sonoi is enjoying this, but Taro feels sad of the circumstances that are forcing him to fight, as he believes Sonoi and him could have been friends if he wasn’t a Noto. The two transform and ready their blades. Sonoi is determined to end this today, but takes over the narration telling the audience that maybe he should explain how all the events leading up to this started…
Three days ago, the Donbrothers were enjoying a relaxing day of summer fun at a water park. Haruka enjoys the water slides, Shinichi is reciting haikus while calmly swimming around and Tsuyoshi and Taro are floating around on inner tubes in the pool, with Kaito serving drinks to them from the cafe through an invisible door.
Haruka calls Taro over to put Tsuyoshi in the water by tipping him off his inner tube, but he runs into Sonoi when diving in and the two speak underwater. Sonoi wants to settle their duel now and emerges from the pool once Taro accepts his challenge. Haruka sees this and the team talks with Taro about his duel, wanting to assist him. Taro realizes he has taken too long to get around to the appointed duel and refuses help as he gave his word it would be a one on one fight. Sonoi also seemed serious about fighting fair, so Taro trusts him to keep to that promise. Taro has three days to prepare for the fight.
The next day, Sonoi is in a pool hall, but his game is interrupted by Sononi and Sonoza who insists he train for the fight. They transform into their armored forms while Sonoi remains in human form and orders them not to hold back when they hesitate to fight him in that state. Sonoi’s thoughts reveal that he is simulating Taro’s speed and power in a fight against him while untransformed, with his slower speed forcing him to be more defensive in strategy.
Taro meanwhile is doing his usual delivery routine at work, but his teammates are concerned about him not training for the upcoming duel. Taro says that he just accepts whatever outcome the fight will bring. It would be simpler if he could train to be stronger, but he has a “painful strength” and sees no point in doing it. Shinichi doesn’t understand what that means and leaves.
With one day remaining, Sonoi sharpens his focus at the pool hall and intensely trains with Sononi and Sonoza to increase his speed and strength to match Taro’s. His end goal is to get the timing of his strikes to a precise opening to defeat his rival. He successfully defeats Sononi and Sonoza, who realizes that the tactic Sonoi plans to use is a suicidal move if done incorrectly. Sonoza is concerned and pleads for Sonoi to come back to them safe and sound.
On the day of the duel, the other Donbrothers wait nervously at Cafe Donbura. Sonoi is at the designated place for the duel… but Taro is late and doesn’t show up. Back at the Cafe, Tsuyoshi is frantically praying for Taro to come back alive. Sonoi gets irritated with being stood up while the others wonder what is taking the two so long. Taro walks into the cafe with a package for Kaito, revealing that he has not even started the duel yet and races back to his van.
At Shirokuma Express, Sonoi finds Taro loading more packages into his van. Taro explains that a coworker was sick and he was called in to work his shift. Sonoi is offended that Taro seemingly forgot his promise, but the former states that his rivalry with him is a personal matter but his job is important and takes priority over that. Sonoi gets in the driver’s seat of the van and offers to assist Taro with the deliveries so he can get off work early enough to resume their planned duel.
They deliver packages around the city, but run into a bit of trouble when visiting Fusako’s apartment, the lonely mother from the Zyudenki incident. She complains about Taro knocking loudly on her door and interrupting her meal. Sonoi is reluctant to do so, but turns on his charm and apologizes to Fusako, kissing her hand. The act makes Fusako blush and she signs for her package and then gives Sonoi a flirtatious wink. As the two head back to the van, Taro thanks Sonoi for the help and remembers his promise to him to go out for oden. He says that Fusako has oden on her table, upon entering her apartment, Sonoi sees what oden is for the first time and then pardons himself for the intrusion.
With the deliveries done, the two then stand in the quarry and prepare for battle. Both transform and Taro charges at Sonoi, only to pull back when he realizes that Sonoi is aiming to use a suicidal attack. Sonoi believes in sacrificing his own life to achieve victory, but after reading how it will play out by his movements, Taro suspects that the fight will end with both of them dead and the match ending in a draw. He isn’t sure he can defeat someone who is willing to die. Both combatants prepare to strike again.
At Cafe Donbura, Kaito can sense the two fighting, as can Sononi and Sonoza in Ideon.
The two charge at each other, but Jiro interrupts and tries to defend Taro by fighting Sonoi as Don Doragoku. Taro tries to stop him but Don Murasame appears and attacks him, as Mother commands him to destroy the hated enemy of the Noto.
Things get more complicated as Minoru Ono, the former Shurikenki and wannabe ninja, has taken up a new hobby for the purpose of revenge against Taro: studying the occult and learning magic. His interest in the arcane arts combines with his desire for revenge turning him yet again into a Hitotsuki, Mahouki. Mahouki uses Magi Yellow’s thunder magic to blast Taro and the Donbrothers teleport in to keep the Hitotsuki and Don Murasame away from Taro. Things get worse when the Cat Jutos appear and attack in a large group. Taro encounters a Juto for the first time and his attacks have no effect on it. The others are also struggling to deal with the Juto, with Tsubasa once again fighting the Detective Sayama Juto.
Mahouki binds Taro with Magi Green’s earth magic, but Sonoi cuts him loose and the two stand in the center of the chaos ensuing around them. Sonoza and Sononi show up to drive back the Juto and the Donbrothers do so as well so Sonoi and Taro can have their duel.
The two retreat from the battlefield and tend to each other’s wounds. Sonoi says no matter what happens, they should fight with no regrets. Taro agrees and asks what exactly the Juto are. Sonoi explains that the Don Clan, in a further attempt to bring peace between Earth and Ideon, sought an alternative to the human brainwaves the Noto needed to survive. Thus, they created artificial life forms, the Juto, as a solution to a sustainable resource. However the experiments were failures and the Don Clan sealed them away until they recently escaped from imprisonment. Sonoi also explains that Murasame is an artificial life form as well.
Back at the battle, Jiro gets annoyed with the chaos and willingly becomes Don Torabolt on his own, with Dangerous Jiro quickly defeating Mahouki. The Hitotsuki’s defeat sends out an explosion that knocks back the Juto. Mother orders Murasame to fall back and get some rest while the Juto run away and Sonoza and Sononi take their leave.
Mahouki becomes Mahouking and Toradoragonjin tries to deal with it on its own, but gets overwhelmed by his opponent using the spells of the Magirangers. Don Onitaijin appears to help, though Dangerous Jiro doesn’t want anything to do with Taro. Taro tells him to be quiet as he has a duel to get to, quickly executing the DonBros Paradise alongside Toradoragonjin’s Jiro’s Hurricane to defeat Mahouking.
On a vacant bridge, the two warriors walk towards one another, stare at each other for a second, and make their moves after transforming. Taro blocks Sonoi’s sword swing at a sliding angle and then gets close enough to finally land the killing blow. Both cancel their transformations and Sonoi collapses and dies from his injuries.
A melancholy Taro walks away silently, unaware that Murasame has appeared and taken Sonoi’s body away.
