Don 24: Son, Trench Coat for Two (むすこ、ににんばおり Musuko, Nininbaori) is the twenty-fourth episode of Avataro Sentai Donbrothers.

Synopsis[]

Taro delivers a package to Tomoko, a woman who mistakes him for her own son. According to Shinichi, Tomoko has lost all her energy because her son ran away from home and hasn't returned. Shinichi asks Taro to cheer up Tomoko by pretending to be her son, but Taro is incapable of telling lies. Shinichi then comes up with a plan.

Plot[]

Taro makes a package delivery to a woman named Tomoko Higashi, but when she sees his face, she believes him to be someone named Koichiro and tries to embrace him. Taro is naturally confused as Tomoko didn’t take her package and is trying to hug him.

Tomoko then goes with Taro to Shirokuma Express and brought bento lunches with eel for everyone as a thank you gift for caring for her son, claiming that she is ”Koichiro”’s mother. Taro, honest as always, denies that this woman is his mother but Tomoko thinks he is playing some kind of joke and asks everyone to humor him.

Taro goes to Cafe Donbura to discuss with his companions the predicament he is in. Haruka at first thought he wanted to discuss about Jiro or Don Murasame, but that is quickly dismissed. He explains that even though he tries to repeatedly tell Tomoko he is not her son, she doesn’t believe him. He simply has no idea how to deal with her. Shinichi recognizes the name Tomoko Higashi, remembering that she sought his consultation about her only son moving out of her house without any notice of the intent to do so. Haruka thinks that maybe Taro bears a resemblance to her son to cause the case of mistaken identity. Shinichi further recollects that Tomoko is a piano teacher, but ever since Koichiro moved out, she refuses to give lessons or play the piano due to depression.

Shinichi suggests that they lift Tomoko’s spirits up by playing along with her and having Taro pretend to be her son. He tries to encourage him to go along with it by having him see it as a new way of helping others. Taro says he can’t do it and as Haruka points out, Taro’s inability to lie would make the plan fail immediately. However, Shinichi already has a plan to circumvent Taro’s handicap.

Taro enters Tomoko’s home with ear-mounted speakers attached to him, pantomiming whatever Shinichi says through the speaker to interact with her. Tomoko is happy her son has returned and asks for a kiss on the cheek, since Koichiro always kissed her as a way of greeting her when he returned home. Taro awkwardly does so at Shinichi's insistence.

Kaito has closed off the cafe, putting up a notice that it has been “reserved for an event”. Shinichi, Haruka, and Tsuyoshi are monitoring Taro through a laptop connected to wireless cameras on the earpieces and a microphone for Shinichi to speak through. Shinichi tells Tomoko through Taro that he is sorry for making her worry, but she is fine with it now and notices her son has grown quite a bit since she last saw him. Shinichi says that he is still a growing boy, but Taro begins to feel pain as they try to keep up the ruse. Tomoko buys the explanation much to his surprise and contacts Shinichi when she leaves the room, feeling like he isn’t doing the right thing and something bad will happen. Shinichi reassures Taro to let him handle the situation.

Taro later enjoys Tomoko’s home cooked meal of Pork Shogayaki, Koichiro’s favorite dish. Taro almost blows his cover when asked about how the meal was, wanting to say that it was a score of 25 out of 100, but Shinichi interrupts him just in time to say it was worth 200 points. Tomoko asks Taro about the time that they went to a hotel, swam in the ocean, and had fried Japanese butterfish served to them. She wonders which beach they went to, Tsuyoshi panics and asks Koichiro’s friends, who they invited to the cafe to prepare for anything involving Koichiro’s past. They tell them he frequently visited Oorai Coast Beach in Ibaraki, which is the correct answer. Taro almost slips up again by talking over Shinichi and responding to him, with Tomoko noticing the changes in “Koichiro”’s voice. Shinichi says it’s just puberty and she accepts the explanation. Taro thanks her for the hospitality and excuses himself to leave, with Tomoko wondering if he will visit tomorrow and play the piano for her, specifically Chopin’s Nocturne. Taro is very reluctant, but Shinichi responds that he would love to play for her.

Later that evening, Taro collapses on the floor of the cafe in exhaustion from indirectly lying so much. He had never felt so tired before today. Tsuyoshi wonders if it is a good idea to promise to perform the piano. Shinichi massages Taro and says that they couldn’t refuse and Taro needs to keep up his guard as Tomoko is getting suspicious. Haruka is confident that Taro can get through tomorrow because he is great at everything.

Taro then confesses he doesn’t know how to play the piano, but Kaito says he can. He goes into the back and the others follow, revealing that there is a room with a piano. Haruka had no idea this room existed and is more surprised when Kaito, dressed up in a white tuxedo, begins playing. Taro watches closely and listens to the melody, and after Kaito finishes, believes that he gets the general idea of what to do. Haruka, on the other hand, doesn’t believe that is possible.

Elsewhere on the following day, a Hitotsuki, Ninjaki, appears and desires to find a reason to live. He strikes down several bystanders, with them vanishing and only their clothes remaining. He attempts to attack a young boy, but Tsubasa rescues him as Ninjaki escapes.

Taro goes shopping with Tomoko, getting a fancy tuxedo for his performance later on. Taro once again almost slips up by rating his attire, once again requiring Shinichi to step in and talk over him. Things go well as Tomoko feels happy walking with her son outside until Shinichi’s compulsion for poetry and haikus gets the better of him as he recites one about a famous sword being counterfeit under a summer sun.

Tomoko finds Taro’s behavior suspicious as Koichiro never used to like poetry, calling it ridiculous and that he sounds like an old man. This triggers Shinichi, who rants that wabisabi is a school of thought and aesthetics that brings peace to the human heart. Tomoko coldly responds that it sounds more like a slacker’s way of thinking and that Koichiro should think more passionately from the heart. Shinichi is insulted and gives up trying to talk to her because of his wounded pride, leaving the cafe. Haruka and Tsuyoshi panic as he leaves and try to get Shinichi to come back, as Taro is unable to handle the situation by himself.

Tsuyoshi has no choice but to take over as Taro sits down at an outdoor bistro and has coffee with Tomoko. He apologizes for earlier but Tomoko says she is the one who should apologize as she always pressured him into playing piano, but Tsuyoshi says its fine as she only wanted to help. Tomoko then remembers seeing Koichiro’s high school home room teacher in town, but cannot remember his name. Haruka asks Koichiro’s friends and they say it was Mr. Koenji, their math teacher, which is correct. Tomoko remembers that her son was always bad at math. Tsuyoshi says he is sorry and his own insecurities slip out as he speaks through Taro, as if talking to his own mother, and accidentally mentions his own marriage.

This shocks Tomoko and she asks why “Koichiro” never informed her about getting married. Tsuyoshi says that she has always been against everything he wanted, which upsets Tomoko further as he never even introduced his wife to her. Tsuyoshi once again getting too deep into the role and lets loose his wife’s name as Haruka cringes at how bad he is screwing up. Tomoko thinks her son is being scammed somehow by this woman and will not accept the marriage. Insulted by Tomoko’s assessment of Miho, Tsuyoshi quits talking to her and gives up.

Tomoko immediately apologizes, realizing she went too far, she tries to make it up to “Koichiro” by asking to see his wife. Realizing Taro has nobody to speak for him, Haruka makes a desperate move and uses an invisible door to appear as “Miho” and introduces herself to Tomoko. Tomoko thinks she is rather young to be a bride, but Haruka says that love is something that just works out. Taro tries to speak, but his attempt involves lying and as a result, his heart stops and he falls over dead. Tomoko panics and blames “Miho”, but Taro revives upon the sound of Ninjaki attacking nearby and both he and Haruka race to the scene, forgetting Tomoko who follows them.

Tomoko beats Ninjaki over the head with her purse to defend her son, which stops the Hitotsuki. Taro is amazed at the strength of a mother’s love and feels guilty for lying to her. Ninjaki feels sorrow and steps backward, his comment of needing a reason to live makes Tomoko pause as she recognizes it. The pair of Donbrothers change and charge at Ninjaki, with a grumpy Shinichi entering the fight and in no mood for poems. Tsuyoshi and Tsubasa appear next to engage, but Dangerous Jiro arrives and attacks both the Donbrothers and Ninjaki as Don Torabolt.

The real Jiro then stops him from hurting his friends further and wrests control of their body back to him to become Don Doragoku. He apologizes to the team, but Shinichi is still in a foul mood and punishes Jiro by knocking him aside in Robotaro form. Shinichi then knocks Ninjaki off balance with a ground shockwave, with the rest of the team going into Robotaro forms and finishing Ninjaki with the Blast Party attack. Ninjaki becomes Ninjaking and Jiro splits in two again to become Toradoragonjin, though Dangerous Jiro once again puts up a brief fight when combining. Ninjaking uses ninja techniques to gain a brief advantage but RoboTora breaks loose and attacks from behind. The two Robotaros recombine, with Jiro complaining that Dangerous needs to behave and not try to escape, finishing off Ninjaking with the Jiro’s Hurricane. The Hitotsuki turned out to be the real Koichiro, who is seen walking away by his mother.

Taro visits Tomoko’s house again and confesses he lied to her, telling her his real name and he is not her son. Tomoko surprisingly takes it well, saying it doesn’t matter as she had fun with him and thanks him for cheering her up. Taro asks if he can do something for her.

Later, Taro regrets he couldn’t play the piano for Tomoko as he beautifully plays Chopin’s Nocturne alone in Cafe Donbura’s piano room, revealing his offer was to give Tomoko a shoulder rub, which she accepted. Taro smiles thinking about Tomoko as he plays. Meanwhile, Koichiro returns home and apologizes to his mother for running away, asking if they could play the piano again and this time he will take it seriously. Tomoko then opens the door and hugs her son, Koichiro kisses her cheek and both go into the house. Taro continues to play, hoping Tomoko can find happiness as the episode ends.
