Don 23: Dog Becomes a Dog (イヌ、いぬになる Inu, Inu ni Naru) is the twenty-third episode of Avataro Sentai Donbrothers. It features the debut of Toradoragonjin.

Synopsis[]

Children are offering flowers and water at the site of a traffic accident where a dog had died. Miho, Tsuyoshi's wife, involuntarily joins hands with them. Meanwhile, Jukenki appears and the Donbrothers fight it. Tsubasa is blown away by Jukenki's attack and falls to the site of the accident, destroying the offerings. Because of the dog's curse, it traps Tsubasa as Inu Brother!

Plot[]

Jiro briefly recaps the mecha battle from the previous episode, commenting he doesn’t have a power like Don Onitaijin… at least not yet anyways.

Tsuyoshi is walking with Miho when they come across a boy placing a soccer ball on top of a dog’s collar and flowers and a glass cup of water right next to it on the sidewalk. When Miho asks what he is doing, the boy explains his Corgi was killed by a car when trying to cross the street, so he made a makeshift shrine for him. Miho feels sympathetic and prays at the shrine, Tsuyoshi feels moved by his wife’s kindness and prays for the boy’s dog too.

In a slumber, Tsubasa dreams of a memory of him and Natsumi at a public swimming pool where she tries to teach him how to swim. She teases Tsubasa for being so athletic yet incapable of swimming, then lets go of him, which causes him to frantically doggie paddle his arms and legs. Natsumi chuckles and says that at least he can swim like a dog, but Tsubasa doesn’t find her teasing very amusing as he tries to stay afloat. As Tsubasa sleeps on a park bench, Miho is nearby with Tsubasa, who compliments her empathy towards the young boy. Miho’s voice stirs Tsubasa awake, who believes it is Natsumi, but he just misses the couple as they left the area for home.

At a cafe, a stressed out student named Tamaru is trying to study for an exam, only to have the noise of the surrounding customers and employees increase his stress as he cannot concentrate. The waitress bringing his cup of coffee and the clatter of the chinaware setting on the table causes Tamaru to snap, screaming that he wishes everyone would be quiet. The stress and desire for silence turns Tamaru into Jukenki, who attacks the cafe. Tsubasa is teleported to the location of Jukenki along with Tsuyoshi, Haruka and Shinichi. Jukenki becomes even more agitated when Taro makes his bombastic grand entrance and blasts Tsubasa with a Gekiwaza style technique, sending him flying into the air. The others are too focused on chasing the fleeing Jukenki despite Tsuyoshi being worried about Tsubasa.

Tsubasa wakes up near a playground, his crash on the ground having destroyed the shrine of the dog by crushing the flowers, shattering the cup and knocking over the dog’s favorite soccer ball. Tsubasa walks over it without realizing and then discovers that he cannot deactivate his transformation into Inu Brother. Two high school girls see him and at first think he is cute until he starts talking and showing his usual bad attitude, resulting in them pelting stones at him. As he runs away, a dark aura envelops the Dog’s belongings and offerings.

Tsubasa consults Jin about his transformation problem, Jin at first refuses to help, but then says that Tsubasa is haunted and cursed by a vengeful spirit of a dog. He will not divulge any details on how to fix this, which makes Tsubasa angry and he recklessly leaps at Jin’s cell and gets electrocuted by the prison bars.

Tsubasa gripes about his predicament, saying that being cursed by a dog is the stupidest thing he has ever heard of. He begins to feel uncomfortably hot in his suit in the summer heat and is starving. He then smells food with his canine nose and goes into a married couple’s house, ravenously devouring the husband’s lunch like a dog and then being shooed out by the wife who tells her husband to call someone. Mere minutes after escaping the house, Tsubasa is then chased by Animal Control.

Meanwhile, Jiro has returned home to the country to visit and catch up with his friends and his girlfriend Rumi and a banquet is enjoyed by all. He tells them he is having a hard time being a hero so far as there are some “interpersonal issues” he is dealing with, but he can transform now to fight evil. Jiro’s friends ask if he can show them his transformation, but he declines and considers that somewhat irresponsible to do. Instead, he shows them a selfie on his phone he had someone take of him as Don Doragoku and excuses himself to go to the bathroom.

The group of friends critique the costume as a cheap store bought outfit or a fake CGI generated image, doubting its authenticity. Rumi is more supportive as Jiro is the only one of the group that kept following his dreams and never gave up. The friends talk about what they wanted to be when they were kids and the fact that the realities of adulthood forced them to give up their dreams. Jiro comes out of the bathroom and Rumi and the gang all show encouragement and support for him, promising to keep cheering for his success. Jiro is moved by their kind words and thanks them all.

Later in the evening, Jiro prepares to return to Tokyo, asking Rumi if he succeeded in being a real hero, she promises to make her delicious bento box lunches for him to help his vitality and show her support in the fight against evil. Rumi agrees to the promise and before Jiro departs, he surprises her with a short transformation into Don Doragoku.

The next day, Tsubasa is sulking, unsure of what to do since he is still stuck in Ranger form. He sees Miho, once again mistaking her for Natsumi, but discovers to his horror he can no longer speak and is barking because of the curse. Miho fawns over Tsubasa, thinking he is an adorable lost puppy and picks him up to hug him. Tsubasa thinks about how long it has been since Natsumi warmly embraced him, it felt nice and he thinks whatever is happening with him isn’t so bad if she is here beside him. Jukenki suddenly appears and attacks them both because Tsubasa was making affectionate puppy noises. The blast knocks Tsubasa out of Miho’s arms and he then gets up and uses his weapons to drive Jukenki away, who cannot stand the sounds of gunfire and the shuriken crashing into him.

Tsubasa then sniffs for Miho, who ran off to get away from the battle but passed out from her injuries in an alley. Tsubasa races to her aid, but the curse begins sapping his strength and he tries to go for help. He tries to find Tsuyoshi, but he isn’t at home. He then goes to Shirokuma Express to get Taro’s help, but the other employees remove him because no dogs are allowed in the office and Taro drives off without noticing him even as Tsubasa tries to chase after him.

Dark storm clouds form as Miho awakens and Tsubasa finds himself being chased by the Detective Sayama disguised Cat Juto, tripping over into a pile of trash and passing out as his strength completely leaves him. Just as the Juto prepares to kill him, Miho sees Tsubasa hurt and her Crane Juto personality surfaces as her powers cause pouring rain to manifest in the area. She engages the Cat in battle to protect Tsubasa, injuring him with a powerful chop from her left hand and forcing him to retreat. The rain stops as the sky clears and Tsubasa wakes up to see “Natsumi” twitch her neck in an unnatural way, but can’t remember her name or his own as the curse erases his mind and fully transforms Tsubasa into a black dog. Jukenki arrives and Miho leaps away to escape him.

Jukenki runs into an open field where four of the Donbrothers surround him. Shinichi notices that they are one member short, but Taro thinks they can take Jukenki on their own without Inu Brother. The team matches the Hitotsuki’s Gekiranger power with a Dairanger Avatar Change, using the Dairinkens in combat.

Jiro arrives to help, driven by his friend’s encouragement to be stronger, only for something strange to happen as Dangerous Jiro splits into a separate body from Jiro. With both now fully aware of each other, Dangerous Jiro criticizes his good half’s admiration of Taro, believing it holds back their potential to be strong and surpass him. Jiro can feel all of Dangerous’s hate for Taro, but asks him to put that aside for now as he needs his help. Both Avatar Change into Don Doragoku and Don Torabolt and then after a short fight with Jukenki, unlock their Robotaro Gears to become Robogoku and Robobolt.

While both fight Jukenki, Robobolt’s wild nature wasn’t above unleashing friendly fire upon Robogoku to hit its target or clashing with him at times. The two fire powerful energy blasts to finish Jukenki, who becomes Jukenking. Jiro commands that they combine but Dangerous Jiro isn’t a willing participant and fusses a bit after being caged as the combined Toradoragonjin, until Jiro persuades his other half to settle down. The Donbrothers are amazed at the new robot, but concerned about where its loyalty is. Their concerns are put to rest as the two giants engage in a Chinese style kung fu brawl. The fight turns in Jiro’s favor as he uses a platform to outpace Jukenking, despite the latter trying to use his swiped sword. Jiro then unleashes the Dragon-Tiger Art: Jiro’s Hurricane attack to defeat Jukenking. Jiro celebrates his first victory with his new robot.

Meanwhile, the scared and now completely canine Tsubasa is wandering the streets as a stray until a little girl finds him and decides to adopt him.

Several days later, Miho and Tsuyoshi are walking home from the floral shop they visit frequently, having bought matching coffee mugs. They see the destroyed shrine of the young boy’s dog and feel this is disrespectful to him and whomever did this doesn’t believe in karma. Miho places the ball back on top of the collar, places her flowers next to it and cleans up the broken glass, while her husband gives up his coffee mug. Tsuyoshi fills it to give an offering of water to the dog’s spirit. Both of them then say a prayer in a payment of respect, with Miho hoping the pup can find peaceful rest now in the afterlife.

The little girl goes to feed “Pochi” his kibble outside and pets her dog, only for Tsubasa to return to normal as the dog’s spirit has been appeased. But either due to the memory loss effects or simply extreme hunger, Tsubasa continues to eat the kibble from his bowl and behave like a dog as the little girl continues petting him.
