This article is about an episode in Avataro Sentai Donbrothers. |
Don 20: High Nose Elegy (はなたかえれじい Hanataka Erejī) is the twentieth episode of Avataro Sentai Donbrothers. It features Jiro's first transformation into Don Torabolt.
Synopsis[]
Jiro's childhood friend, Rumi decides to pay him a visit. Jiro says that he wants to be the leader of the Donbrothers before he comes out of the countryside saying that he will be a hero. Taro agrees, and since he cannot tell lies, he decides to leave the Donbrothers and make Jiro their leader. Jiro, now the leader of the "Dragon Fires" instead of the Donbrothers starts training Haruka and the rest of the team. However, he gradually gets carried away…
Plot[]
The previous episode recap is brief, with Jiro recalling of his battle with Don Murasame and him wondering who this mysterious enemy is.
Inside Jiro’s tiny house, he looks at photos of his friend Rumi on his phone and remembers that he vowed to never return to her to fulfill his duty a hero. Despite this, Jiro is feeling a bit homesick and misses Rumi, wondering if she is lonely and crying her eyes out like him. By coincidence, she calls him and has some great news, she’s heading into Tokyo for a visit.
Jiro goes to Cafe Donbura, explaining the situation and his relationship with Rumi. It is revealed that Jiro tried to leave his small town several times as a kid to be a hero and this resulted in an on again off again relationship with Rumi.
Taro wants to know what any of this has to do with them. Jiro says he promised the people in his town that he would be a superhero when he arrived in the big city, so he wants to impress Rumi by being the leader of the Donbrothers. Shinichi considers this an asinine request and Haruka disapproves as well, but Taro surprises both of them by accepting the request. He is intrigued and considers it a learning experience for the five of them, but because of his inability to lie, he decides to leave the team!
From now on, Jiro is in charge of the Donbrothers.
Jiro is elated and thanks Taro, but the others protest such an idea. Haruka thinks Taro should remain in command of the team until Rumi arrives, but Taro thinks such a thrown together dynamic would arouse suspicion. They are a team, starting now, as Taro leaves.
Jiro’s first act as leader is to change the team’s name to the Dragon Fires, which everyone else thinks is a terrible name but just humor their new leader by going along with it.
Jiro gathers his team to do a spirited roll call, but everyone is not enthused because it is pouring down rain and they are wearing bright tracksuit uniforms with a tacky team emblem on the chest. Jiro tries again to pump up the team, and they get it a little better but are more annoyed. When Jiro tries for a third time, Tsuyoshi has to hold back an infuriated Haruka from clobbering him while Shinichi sees this as pointless and asks what Jiro really wants them to do. Jiro says he wants his team to be in top physical shape to do their best, as he noticed Taro’s attitude towards training as leader was rather lax.
The group jogs up a long flight of steps, getting soaked to the bone as they toil upwards. Haruka repeatedly thinks “This sucks” in her mind as despite being athletic, she isn’t motivated to work out in the rain and really dislikes Jiro being the leader.
Tsubasa is nearby in the same park, reminiscing about Natsumi. He wonders why he cannot find her, he did keep his promise to not speak about the incident for over a year. He witnesses the team jogging in the rain and Tsuyoshi invites him to join the training session, but Shinichi believes an amateur would not be able to keep up. This spurs on Tsubasa to join, but he isn’t as in shape as he thought and later bails by pretending a cop is chasing after him, fleeing the training course.
Upon reaching the top of the stairs, Jiro is doing squats and calisthenics while everyone else rests aside from Tsuyoshi who nearly falls to the ground in exhaustion. Haruka talks to Shinichi about feeling wary around Jiro given his split personality, worried that the evil personality will resurface to attack them all again. Shinichi is also concerned about that as well. Jiro then orders the team to deploy upon receiving a call on his cell phone about an emergency.
A truck is moving out of control on the road and endangering pedestrians, the driver having lost control due to an unknown medical problem causing him pain and to slip in and out of consciousness. Jiro orders the team to stop the truck. Tsuyoshi and Shinichi try to grab the front of it, but the truck is moving too fast and both get hit and sent flying into the air. Haruka is forced to go next as Jiro stands behind her, she panics and shouts for the truck to stop as it careens towards her, only for it to stop a few inches from hitting her. Jiro checks on the driver, who thanks them for saving him. Jiro introduces himself as the leader of the Dragon Fires and helps the driver get out of the truck to be taken to a hospital. Kaito is on a roof nearby, watching the team closely.
At Cafe Donbura, Jiro proposes a radical idea, using their Ranger powers for daily rescue work on top of fighting the Hitotsuki. He also proposes that the Dragon Fires go public so that the people of the city know them better and to become celebrities. Tsuyoshi is kind of unsure about such a thing, superheroes usually do their best work protecting the Earth in secret. Jiro finds that to be a woefully outdated sentiment, Haruka agrees with Jiro for once as there are possible monetary perks to being public heroes such as retirement benefits.
Shinichi rightfully points out that Haruka is too young to have such concerns as retirement. Since he has no interest in money or accolades, he is only interested in how this will play out with Jiro as leader since he has no allegiance to Taro. Kaito seems to be more concerned watching the team discuss this idea.
Elsewhere, a shirtless man named Ashida is walking in the rain and challenges Karaki, the kickboxing champion of Japan, to a fight. The fight ends quickly, as Ashida KOs Karaki with a single punch to the gut. Ashida is furious how weak his opponent was, burning with desire to fight someone stronger than him so he can become even stronger. The rage and desire inside Ashida become the aura of a Hitotsuki.
The Dragon Fires attempt to rescue people from a burning building, but the smoke and Shinichi’s helmet trapping said smoke inside his Saru Brother costume causes him to pass out. He wakes up, to his confusion, outside the building and the people have all been rescued including the man he was trying to save. Jiro does some promoting for the team to the rescued people with Kaito watching nearby. Over the next few days, the TV news reports the Dragon Fires' heroics, from rescuing the passengers from a derailment to flooding to rescuing civilians from a collapsed building. Kaito watches all of this from the Cafe, disapproving of the team seeking praise and glory.
Sononi and Sonoi are at a shipping dock in a discussion about Don Murasame. Sonoi had spoken with the Council about it and reveals that Murasame is an artificial biological weapon created by the Noto people that escaped from its containment due to possibly developing a consciousness. Sononi wonders what triggered such a reaction, with Sonoi suspecting that the Juto appearing in the human world might be connected to the event. Sonoza is busy reading First Love Hero and trying to imitate the facial expressions of the characters in it. A black Toyota Century pulls up and a mysterious woman comes out, asking if the trio would like to be in a movie called New First Love Hero.
Back at Cafe Donbura, Jiro congratulates and thanks everyone for their hard work today. He also shows off the new internet website he made for the Dragon Fires, which has become flooded with requests for TV guest spots, interviews and a shoot for a photo book album. Shinichi is excited about the last one, having always desired to do modeling.
Kaito finally speaks his mind, stating he doesn’t like how carried away they are becoming, people who do so have their noses point higher and higher into the air like Pinocchio. A hero’s inflated ego can become a weakness in itself. Unfortunately, Kaito is ignored as the others look at social media on their phones and read a rumor that they will be given the Minister’s Honor Award for their dedicated service to the people.
At Kaku Judo Hall, Goseiki fights Judo masters and beats them all. Disappointed and frustrated, Goseiki demands a strong fighter to come out and face him. Taro arrives on the scene and accepts his challenge, changing into Don Momotaro to fight. Goseiki proves a bit more troublesome for him alone as the sword style he uses is hardly a challenge for Goseiki as a master in martial arts. Zenkaiser Black arrives to help and the duo manages to drive back the Hitotsuki in retreat.
As the two are now alone, they demorph and talk. Taro has been wondering who exactly Kaito is, the latter simply says he was born to be a hero, fights as one and will always be a hero. Taro is amused by the response, thinking that must be a lot of work. He then asks Kaito how his companions are doing, with the latter responding they are “learning about life”.
The team is indeed being awarded by the prime minister, but their inflated egos have caused their noses to grow incredibly long. As they prepare to receive the award, each of them are oblivious to their changes. Jiro daydreams of meeting Rumi, who in his fantasy is very proud of him and madly in love. The Ryuko no Geki and DonBlasters appear to call them to battle, but the group only care about the award and remove their Avataro Gears to reject transforming.
Kaito appears and has had enough of their selfish behavior, pointing out he was right and their noses have grown. He reveals all this fame was thanks to Taro, who was worried about the team and shadowed them most of the time. Taro was the one who stopped the runaway truck and rescued Shinichi from the fire using his Alter form. Jiro is not happy hearing this while the others step back and reflect on that and how it makes sense. Kaito reveals that Taro is fighting all alone right now and leaves. The group is humbled and show concern for Taro, causing their large noses to fall off and their real ones to return. Haruka, Tsuyoshi and Shinichi race to aid Taro… but Jiro stays behind in shock. The lights flicker as his rage grows, thinking about how Taro ruined his big moments by interfering as he screams and Dangerous Jiro takes over his body.
The trio teleport in to help Taro fight Goseiki, who asks if they have “snapped out of it”, to which they say they have and join him, though Tsuyoshi almost steps on Tsubasa as Inu Brother when he arrives and points him to where the fight is.
Even with all five of them, the Donbrothers are struggling to beat Goseiki, who uses RyuuRanger’s Qi blasts in tandem with his martial arts. The team manages to land a hit when Haruka and Shinichi hold down Goseiki long enough for Taro to kick him into a stack of barrels.
Don Murasame tries to attempt to interfere but Sonoi shows up to fight him in his armored form.
Dangerous Jiro arrives in a white and golden tiger themed robe, watching Taro fight and loudly making his presence known. His rage materializes a new Avataro Gear into his hand, which he uses to Avatar Change into a Silver Ranger he calls Don Torabolt. He immediately attacks Taro, who tells him to do this some other time as they need to defeat Goseiki. Don Torabolt decides to get rid of Goseiki so he can properly fight Taro and eliminate him. The wicked Ranger lands brutal and devastating blows as Goseiki cries out in pain.
Sonoi and Don Murasame continue to fight until Sononi stops the battle with one of her arrows, telling Sonoi they need to leave so they can be stars in the movie. Sonoi reluctantly goes with her while a dissatisfied Don Murasame leaves.
Don Torabolt weakens Goseiki and finishes him with his final attack, the White Tiger Prowling Thunder Strike. Goseiki becomes Goseiking and despite Don Torabolt attacking them once again, the five manage to form Don Onitaijin.
Meanwhile, Kaito is accepting the Prime Minister’s award for the team.
As Don Onitaijin fights Goseiking, everyone apologizes to Taro for letting fame and pride go to their heads. Taro thinks that they indeed had a learning experience. The team finishes Goseiking with a dual energy slash, with the purified Ashida throwing a childish fit that he cannot fight well no matter what he tries. The purified Dairanger Avataro Gear falls and lands in Don Torabolt’s hand, becoming the KibaRanger Avataro Gear.
In Jiro’s village, Rumi’s mother is surprised to see her daughter is still home eating an ice pop. Rumi says traveling to Tokyo seems like too much work, so she decided to stay home.
After accepting the award, Kaito becomes a hypocrite and lets the fame go to his head, resulting in his nose growing long. He claims to be the commander of the Dragon Fires and he will always be a hero.
Haruka enters a book store, only to stumble upon a photo book of Kaito. She loudly shouts “What the heck is this?!”, disturbing the other patrons as the episode ends.
