"Overload! Overload! Too many changes! System locked!"
―Cyclopsus' computer's only line when its systems failed due to the Rangers changing into the Ultrazord.[src]

Cyclopsus (also known as Cyclopsis) was a giant evil War Zord piloted by Goldar and arguably the strongest enemy the Power Rangers faced in the Season 1.

Cyclopsus is well known for being the very first Evil Zord to appear in the entire Power Rangers franchise.

History

Pre-series

"Cyclopsus is one of Rita's most terrifying creations. She hasn’t brought it out in over 10,000 years. You will have to defeat him if you are to release the people of Angel Grove from the dimensional vortex in which Rita has them trapped."
Zordon describing Cyclopsus to the Rangers in Part II.[src]

Cyclopsus was originally used at least 10,000 years ago during an attack on Earth by Rita during her original war against Zordon. It was destroyed and is implied to have been her final attack before being sealed away in the dumpster.

In the series

Following shortly after the failure of the Twin Man and his Evil Rangers, Rita decides to summon Goldar's Zord to fight and hopefully destroy the Power Rangers. To accomplish this, Rita sends the entire population of Angel Grove into a side dimension and brings her Moon Palace to Earth in order to make her strongest and ease the creation of Cyclopsus.

The War Zord erupts from underground which Alpha and Zordon detect but Goldar enters it and goes on a rampage before they can act. The Rangers arrive in their Megazord but Cyclopsus is far too strong and easily bashes them around, so they call on the Dragonzord. Unfortunately, neither its missile attack nor its tail can faze the Zord and both take a thrashing. The Megazord tries to advance but is picked up with its telekinesis and thrown down, so they form Dragonzord Battle Mode. However, the Tyrannosaurus has its finishing breath attack pushed back at it and goes down before the Dragonzord Battle Mode fires forth its head fin only to have it thrown back. Cyclopsus then knocks the two down with a barrage of missiles and electrocutes them with the War Zord's extending arm cables. Luckily, Zordon summons Titanus who blasts the Zord back which releases its hands, and the Rangers form the Ultrazord. The Zord's strong armor is no match for its barrage and Goldar has to flee before it explodes but its head manages to remain intact.

Although the Rangers think that it is destroyed, Rita summons Lokar who reforms it into a stronger version that is now equipped with arm blades although lacking its other abilities. The Megazord and Dragonzord deploy again but Cyclopsus easily cleaved off the Megazord's right arm and the Dragonzord's tail. Rita then blasted them into apparent oblivion although it is soon revealed that they actually teleported back to their hiding places. Following a failed attack on the Power Rangers with the Putty Patrol, in which they escape using their Communicators which Rita was previously blocking, Goldar returns to Cyclopsus and goes on a rampage. After linking to Rita Repulsa's computer systems while her Palace is on Earth, Alpha discovers that the only weakness in Cyclopsus is that its systems need to adjust to compensate for battle with a new opponent. Too many changes in the enemy formations at once causes it to freeze up and be completely open to attack. With this new strategy, the Rangers once again deploy against the War Zord.

The Rangers first attack with their individual Dinozords, doing a little damage with the Sabertooth Tiger and Triceratops Dinozord's tail blasts and the Pterodactyl's laser cannons but it soon overwhelms the Tyrannosaurus so they form the Megazord and summon the Dragonzord. The effects of rapid changes are already taking shape. The Power Sword is able to prove a match for the Zord's arm blades, pinning them down so that the Dragonzord can smash them with its tail. With the Zord now basically helpless and on the verge of freezing up, they form the Dragonzord in Battle Mode which thrashes the Zord, getting in a few really good hits, but is overwhelmed by Lokar's lightning. Crushing a building, Jason calls for Titanus and they form the Ultrazord which causes Cyclopsus' computers to overload, and then vanquishes Lokar and destroys Cyclopsus once and for all.

Legacy

Unfortunately, the War Zord's computer warned Goldar of its imminent demise and he is able to escape. In the process, the entire population of Angel Grove is returned and the Evil Space Aliens are forced to retreat back to the Moon for fear of the Ultrazord annihilating them. It has been speculated that because Alpha and Zordon hacked into Rita's database, and Rita found out, she was forced into alternative methods of monster making (such as planting seeds and transformation of objects) until Finster had fresh monster ideas.

Behind the Scenes

Portrayal

Design

Cyclopsus' design appears to be inspired by giant robots from the Japanese mecha genre, but otherwise seems to havee no specific basis.

Etymology

Cyclopsus is a portmanteau of Cyclops, the one-eyed creature of Greek mythology, and -sus, a suffix meaning "of".

Notes

  • Cyclopsus is the first evil Zord in Power Rangers.
  • The shooting script for “Doomsday” used the spelling of the name “Cyclopsus”. The original broadcast closed captioning for "Doomsday, Part II" used the spelling "Cyclopses". Official synopses and merchandise, such as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for the Sega Genesis and tabletop game releases, use the spelling “Cyclopsis”.
  • Cyclopsus appears as an enemy (and sometimes playable character) in every Mighty Morphin Power Rangers video game adaptation aside from the Game Boy version. Its second form however is absent for the Game Gear version.

Appearances

Cyclopsus appeared in several video game adaptations of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, typically as the game's final opponent. Both its first and second forms appear in the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis releases, while only its first form appears in the Game Gear release. It also appears in the Sega CD release through use of FMV footage of Doomsday. The only MMPR game not to feature Cyclopsis in any fashion was the Game Boy release.

  • Cyclopsus is only explicitly identified as Goldar's Zord in the Game Gear release.

Power Rangers: Heroes of the Grid

Cyclopsus appears in the board game Power Rangers: Heroes of the Grid as an opponent in the "Cyclopsus Deluxe Figure" expansion. He is classified as a Boss.

Power Rangers Roleplaying Game

Cyclopsus appears in the Power Rangers Roleplaying Game as a Zord in the "Across the Stars" expansion.
