The Retro Rangers is a term referring to a team of veteran Power Rangers assembled by the Sentinel Knight after the Overdrive Rangers' link to the Morphing Grid was severed by Thrax and his evil alliance in the two-parter "Once a Ranger". The five original actors for the Retro Rangers have reprised their roles from the past series.

Team History

After Thrax, son of Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd, was freed, he recruited all the villains who have been searching for the Jewels of the Corona AuroraFlurious, Moltor, Kamdor, Miratrix, and the Fearcats Mig and Benglo, to unite with him temporarily. By severing their connection to the Morphing Grid forever, the temporary Evil Alliance destroyed the Rangers' powers, and Andrew Hartford couldn't fix their destroyed morphers. They used their genetically enhanced skills in an attempt to defeat the villains, but fared no better, so the Sentinel Knight recruited five Rangers from the past — Kira Ford, Xander Bly, Adam Park, Bridge Carson, and Tori Hanson, to replace the Overdrive Rangers until their connection to the Morphing Grid was restored.

The villains in Thrax' "Evil Alliance" were angry, because Thrax did not think there would be more Rangers. Meanwhile, Mack Hartford (Red Overdrive Ranger) was searching for information on the Sword Excelsior, which Thrax said was the only thing capable of eliminating the Sentinel Knight. He tried to retrieve the sword, but is confronted by Thrax, who intended on saving the legacy of his family of Evil. He was unable to claim the sword for himself, so he sent a giant monster, Vulturus, into the city to destroy it. The Retro Rangers head him off in the DriveMax Ultrazord and Flash Point Megazord, but were overpowered, and DriveMax Ultrazord loses an arm in the battle.

Meanwhile, Mack convinced the Rangers that they will always be Rangers, powers or not, and they all attempted to free Excelsior from the Warrior-Goddess' hands. The statue came to life and gave them the sword, sensing the shared friendship and combined conviction in their hearts. Then, Mack headed to the battlefield, where the Retro Rangers were about to be destroyed, and used the Sword Excelsior to destroy Vulturus. Meanwhile, Adam reactivated Alpha 6 and teleported him inside the Morphing Grid, where he fixed the severed connection, restoring the Overdrive Rangers' powers. Mack handed Sentinel Knight the Excelsior sword, which gave the Knight a Cyborg form.

Confronting the "Evil Alliance", all 11 Rangers morphed and battle the villains. Adam battled Thrax. Bridge and Mack teamed up to defeat Flurious. Dax, Will and Xander defeated the Fear Cats. Tori and Rose battled Moltor and his Lava Lizards, and Kira and Ronny teamed up against Kamdor and Miratrix. Tyzonn was able to destroy the newly revived Vulturus and Flurious's Chillers. To finish the battle, the Sentinel Knight arrives in his Cyborg form and destroyed Thrax, and then joined the Rangers in defeating the rest of the villains, the villains then retreated.

"Retro Rangers" Card from Power Rangers ACG

  • Although the term "Retro Rangers" had been conjectural since the episode premiere, the Power Rangers Action Card Game began officially using the term for the team's card.
  • This is the first team since Mighty Morphin to feature both a Green and Black Ranger on the same team, predating the RPM Rangers and the Dino Charge Rangers (who are still the first regular team since MMPR to have both Green and Black).
  • This is the first team of Power Rangers to be led by Adam, who usually takes second-in-command or is a standard Ranger. It is also the first led by a Black Ranger. Adam is the second non-Red male Ranger to lead a team (after Tommy Oliver as the White Mighty Morphin Ranger), and the only male Ranger to lead a team who has never been a Red Ranger either before or after.
  • This is the second team of Rangers exclusive to Power Rangers, the first being the team of 10 Red Rangers in "Forever Red".
    • Like the Red Ranger team, this team has the distinction of being a team exclusive to Power Rangers yet its members all having Super Sentai counterparts, Tori's counterpart even having a place on the Sentai version of this team.
  • Xander is the only male Ranger to not be a replacement of another user of the power, as Bridge took over as B-Squad red after Sky was promoted and Adam replaced Zack after he, Jason, and Trini went to the Peace conference.
    • He is also the only Ranger of the entire team who has not fought alongside Tommy Oliver at some point in the entire Power Rangers series until "Legendary Battle" (although they are never seen together and Xander's actor was not involved in that episode).
  • This is the first team to have both a female Blue and Yellow Ranger.
    • Coincidentally, both of the female Rangers in this team were the only female Rangers of their respective teams.
  • Ironically, the two members of this team who don't have uniforms when unmorphed (Adam and Kira) are the only two who were on a team with Tommy.
  • The Retro Rangers colors (Red/Yellow/Blue/Black/Green) are exactly the same as the Olympic Rings, as well as the team of the 1988 pre-Mighty Morphin Sentai series, Liveman, and the (at the time, not yet existant) core five RPM Rangers. They are also the same colors of the robot lions in Voltron.
