Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (Boom! Studios)

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is a comic book series published by Boom! Studios. Based on the TV series of the same name, it updates the setting to modern day.

A special one-shot "MMPR Issue #0" was released on January 6, 2016, while the full series debuted in March of the same year.

On July 14, 2020, Boom! Studios announced the book would end in September and be relaunched the following month at Issue #1, with the series simply titled as Mighty Morphin. Though the comic had technically ended at the time, both Mighty Morphin and the concurrent series Power Rangers had variant covers that continued the legacy numbering from Issue #56 onwards.

A special story event titled Charge To 100 spanned issues of both Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers leading up to the celebratory issue, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #100. The next issue kicked off the Recharged era with new writer and former Director of Power Rangers Development and Production, Melissa Flores.

It was announced that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers would be coming to an end with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour #1 finale on July 31, 2024. ^[1][2]

A new ongoing series titled Power Rangers Prime was announced for release beginning on November 13, 2024. ^[3]

Synopsis[]

Taking place in Angel Grove in the year 2015, Issue #1 began with the "Green Ranger: Year One" story arc, where Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger, has broken free of Rita Repulsa's control and joined the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. However, he suffers the side effects of having been brainwashed by evil.

The second story was the "Black Dragon/Lord Drakkon" story arc, where an evil version of Tommy from an alternate reality plots the end of the Power Rangers of the main universe of the comic and some of the Rangers end up trapped in Drakkon's world and must fight to survive. A third and currently unnamed arc involved the Power Rangers lives becoming more complicated as a former Ranger takes an interest in their activities, which could threaten to break apart the team.

A fourth arc called "Shattered Grid" ran from February 2018 and concluded on the month of the 25th anniversary in August. The story arc started with Issue #25, with a prelude in Issue #24 of the main book. The arc was a multi-series crossover as it tied into Go Go Power Rangers, commemorating both the 25th anniversary of Power Rangers and the 25th issue of the main book. It involved Lord Drakkon returning to take revenge on the Power Rangers in an assault that could threaten the very existence of all Power Rangers across time and space. The arc's tagline is: "No Ranger is Safe".

A fifth arc titled "Beyond the Grid" would follow up the Shattered Grid story, this time following a team of various Rangers led by a Kimberly from an alternate reality fighting to survive as its focus. This was the first arc to be helmed by a new writer, as Kyle Higgins departed from the writing staff after a 31 issue story run.

A sixth arc called "Necessary Evil" was revealed at the 2019 New York Toy Fair by Hasbro and Boom! Studios. The story would go back to focusing on the MMPR team and focus on the aftermath of reality being restored after the Shattered Grid event and feature the comic timeline debut of the White Ranger. The event started in issue #40 on June of 2019 and Ryan Parrott of the Go Go Power Rangers comics line was made the head writer for the story arc.^[4] According to Ryan Parrott, the story arc involved both book series, much like Shattered Grid, meaning once again Go Go Power Rangers is tied to the events of a story arc. This would be the final arc to involve GGPR as the book would end at Issue #32^[5]

The seventh arc, titled "Unlimited Power" had been announced for the fall of 2020 which featured a new Green Ranger fighting against Lord Zedd.

The eighth arc, "The Eltarian War" started in November 2021. The story arc deals with the fallout of the events of Unlimited Power with Eltar in the midst of a galactic conflict.

The ninth arc, known as The Death Ranger/Charge To 100 first released in April 2022. The story introduces The Death Ranger as the Power Rangers and Omega Rangers join forces to battle cosmic threats.

The tenth arc, "Recharged" was announced for October 2022. A new creative team introduces Mistress Vile as she recruits the Vessel to serve her and Dark Specter.

The eleventh and final arc is “Darkest Hour”, which began in August 2023. A cataclysmic event where Mistress Vile uses dark magic, a Master Arch and the Zeo Crystal to infect the Morphin Grid and frees Dark Specter to wreak havoc on all of time and space.

Mighty Morphin/Power Rangers Legacy Numbering[]

After Mighty Morphin Power Rangers split two separate titles, Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers retained their legacy numbering in variant covers. A story event titled Charge To 100 was later introduced in April 2022 to celebrate 100 issues of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and led into the Recharged era.

Deluxe Edition[]

The Deluxe Collections are hardcover compilations of the issues of the comic book series which also feature bonus content for readers such as exclusive original stories contained within its pages. Due to their limited quantity and oversized nature, they are a little more expensive than the standard printed volume collections and highly sought after by fans.
