The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers were originally "teenagers with attitude" that Zordon recruited to battle Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd using the power that they wield with their Power Morphers and Power Coins. Years after the team disbanded, they reunited to help save one of their own.
Following the return of Tommy Oliver, Selena Repulsa took the Sabertooth Tiger Power Coin and became a version of the Yellow Ranger. Jason handed the leadership role to Tommy while Kimberly stepped back from the frontlines and gave the Pterodactyl Power Coin to her daughter, Olivia.

Team History[]
In The Return, the team mostly follows the same timeline as the TV series. Jason, Zack, and Trini went to the Peace Conference but never left the team. Tommy also never lost his Green Ranger powers and the team never gained the Zeo powers because their original Mighty Morphin powers remained intact throughout their entire career as superheroes. Following their final battle with Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd on the Moon, the team disbanded and swore to never morph again. Twenty-two years later, the long-disbanded team reunites to help save one of their own. COMIC STORY- MMPR: The Return #1
It was later revealed that the last mission of the Power Rangers 22 years ago was to put an end to the Evil Space Aliens by pacifying them with a device called the Benevolator, which went horribly wrong.
Zack, Billy, and Trini led by Jason tried to hold the line in a diversionary assault until the device was set up by Kimberly and Tommy inside the Moon Palace, which resulted in the complete destruction of their DinoZords when faced off against a giant monster army, forcing the four to abandon them and teleport away with just seconds to spare before the device went off.
Tommy Oliver was forced to stay behind and detonate it via a failsafe trigger after the Benevolator’s casing was damaged in his struggle against Rita Repulsa when he planted it in her bedroom. He urged his wife Kimberly to leave him behind as she was in early pregnancy for the sake of their unborn baby just minutes beforehand and gave her one final kiss before pushing the trigger after she teleported back to Earth.
Upon going off, the released Grid Energy from the Benevolator was proportionately equal to all the monsters on the moon and the dark energy inside them, which seemingly killed all the villains on it in a malfunction that turned the device from a purification wave into something more akin to a nuclear bomb. This also destroyed a portion of the Earth’s Moon from the explosion, leaving large broken fragments floating around it in orbit and a huge hole that was visible from Earth.
