Broodwing is a three-eyed vampire bat-like alien who is encased in an artificial environment as demonstrated by the jar on his head. He is the weapons dealer for the Troobian Empire and the secondary antagonist of Power Rangers S.P.D..

History[]

He supposedly works for Emperor Gruumm but has been known to work for other aliens as well. Halfway through the season, Gruumm got frustrated with Broodwing's expensive weapons that were ineffective against the Rangers and demanded free weapons from him, causing Broodwing to question his loyalties. He is often forced to play with Mora much to his displeasure. Broodwing is the source of the rare Orangehead Krybots as well as providing Gruumm with giant robots for his monsters and Blueheads. Broodwing also has control over a rare race of bats whose bite can cause beings to grow huge. Shortly after the arrival of the Omega Ranger, Gruumm began ordering Broodwing to provide his services while refusing to pay for them if his monsters cannot afford them. This did not sit well with Broodwing, whose main motivation has always been money so he began plotting against Gruumm and attempted to conquer Earth first in order to outclass him. One of his schemes involved bringing the Dino Rangers from the past and planning to force them to do his bidding so he could destroy the S.P.D. Rangers.

When Cruger was kidnapped, Broodwing took advantage of this and invaded the Delta Base with the intent of using the Delta Command Megazord to destroy Newtech City. His plans nearly succeeded as the B-Squad was busy fighting the rogue A-Squad Rangers. However, the B-Squad defeated the A-Squad with the S.W.A.T. Megazord and Kat Manx and Boom were able to escape with help from R.I.C. and disable the Delta Command Megazord. The Rangers then confronted Broodwing and after he was convicted, finally confined him with the Canine Cannon.

Etymology[]

  • His name is portmanteau of Brood and Wing. The word "brood" has its origins in Old English "brōd," meaning "offspring" or "young birds" . It is related to the Old Norse word "brūð" and the Proto-Germanic root "*brōduz," which means "heat" or "breeding" . In a broader sense, "brood" can also refer to a group of offspring or young animals. In the context of Broodwing, the name might be influenced by this concept, suggesting a character who is associated with offspring or a group of followers, possibly the Krybots he controls. Metaphorically, it evolved to describe someone who sits long and dwells intensely on particular thoughts or emotions, often in a gloomy manner. A reference to the character, who is often depicted as a calculating and scheming villain, possibly brooding over his plans and revenge.
    • The word "wing" is derived from the Old English "winge," which means "wing" or "flap." It is related to the Old Norse "vingr" and the Proto-Germanic root "wungō" . This part of the name likely refers to the character's bat-like appearance and the wings he possesses.

Notes[]

  • In Dekaranger, Broodwing was sent flying out of the Delta Base rather than taking a controlled flight to the ground in a shot exclusively shot for SPD.
    • This was changed because he went flying out of the Delta Base as a result of Jack’s counterpart shooting him repeatedly in the face and chest with the Delta Blasters.
      • However, a remnant of this can be seen in his final battle since, when he lands, he lands hard on his head and face despite the controlled descent.
  • Unlike his Sentai counterpart, who was the main villain of Dekaranger, he was only second-in-command to Emperor Gruumm, who has no Sentai counterpart. In more, whereas his Sentai counterpart is destroyed, Broodwing is imprisoned by S.P.D. Rangers.
  • In the Power Rangers Dino Charge episode "Wishing For A Hero", Broodwing's bat-winged cape was combined with Beevil's head and chest armor and a generic body to make an unnamed prisoner on Sledge's Ship.

  • Broodwing can be seen as a member of the audience of Galaxy Warriors in Power Rangers Ninja Steel, in the Warrior Dome where Galaxy Warriors is filmed. In these appearances, Broodwing doesn't have his head container.
  • Broodwing is one of the few major Power Rangers villains to both survive the events of the season and not get any redemption. The others are Baboo, Scorpina, Lokar, Rito Revolto, Master Vile, Porto, Queen Bansheera, Gluto, Lothor, Emperor Gruumm, Mora, The A-Squad Rangers, Miratrix, Jozotic, Lord Zedd's clone and Scrozzle. Kegler and Octoroo's final fate is unknown.
