This article is about an ally in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. |
Bookala is an alien who strongly resembles a Japanese kabuki dancer and made his only appearance as the titular secondary protagonist of the episode “The Great Bookala Escape”.
History
Hailing from a planet also called Bookala. Bookala crash-lands in Angel Grove Park where his ship is picked up by Billy, Adam and Aisha. He has been pursued across the galaxy by Lord Zedd because Bookala's ship is powered by a rare lightning diamond which would give the often power drained Serpentera an infinite power source, thus making it invincible. When inside its ship he is the size of a doll and even looks like one but can grow to full size when holding the diamond. Realizing that the Power Rangers have found the ship, Zedd has Goldar try to annihilate them but they teleport away safely much to Zedd’s chagrin. At the Command Center, Power Rangers examine Bookala’s ship and give the doll like Bookala his lightning diamond when they see that his hand position suggests that he should be holding it and Bookala enlarges back to human-ish size. Given his freaky appearance, the Power Rangers understandably jump back but Zordon reassures them that he is benevolent and Bookala’s broken English begins. To trick Zedd, using an idea from Aisha, the Rangers create a fake Bookala doll and Lightning Diamond whilst the real Bookala and diamond get back into space and escape.
Bookala stands around whilst Billy welds his ship back to normal and then prances around in joy with a snow globe in celebration only for Billy to reveal that Angel Grove doesn’t get snow. Immediately after this however, Tommy calls Aisha and warns her that Serpentera is coming so they prepare to teleport out. However, Zedd creates Weldo from Billy's welding machine to stop them and they are forced to morph and fight him instead. Bookala hangs back even as the Rangers get blasted by the monster and then flees out the back of Billy’s garage with his friends but Weldo follows and threatens to annihilate the alien if the Rangers don’t hand over the Lightning Diamond Cornering Bookala by the warehouse’s exit, and making good on his threat despite not giving the Rangers time to choose either way, Weldo directly hits Bookala with an eye blast that sends this flying. Unfortunately for the monster, this enrages Billy who obliterates Weldo with a single shot to the chest from his Blade Blaster though Bookala turns out to be fine in the end if very dazed. With Weldo gone, the Rangers decide to set-up the escape in this wide open field and have Bookala teleported back to the Command Center in case Zedd sends Putties or another monster. Shortly before departing, Bookala tells Billy that he will always have a home on Bookala and makes it snow in Angel Grove after hearing a previous off-hand comment that it doesn’t snow in Angel Grove. Needing to be on his way, Bookala detatches a vial from his necklace and chants gibberish until he shrinks into his ship and takes off. Bookala makes his escape as the fake Lightning Diamond sabotages Serpentera so, Zedd orders Goldar to fire at the ship which only succeeds in further damaging Serpentera. Furious over his lost chance to steal the diamond, Zedd turns the fake Bookala into an evil version of the original but the Thunder Megazord slays it. Meanwhile, Bookala returns to Planet Bookala to live out the remainder of his life peacefully.
Personality
Bookala is apparently very intelligent and tries to imitate others to learn their language but mostly speaks with oddly organized grammar. Unlike his evil counterpart, Bookala is kind, timid and friendly.

Notes
- Bookala, and by extension the name of his planet and species as well as his evil counterpart, were derived as a pun on the word “kabuki” on which he and his counterpart were based.
- Bad Bookala and Good Bookala used the same Dairanger monster suit as each other which is why they had him created after Bookala left and they never actually interacted.
- Both Bookala and his evil counterpart originated from the same Japanese Gorma Minion (Dairanger’s name for the monsters of the week) and some footage of the evil monster was actually used for the good Bookala (most notably the shot of Weldo blasting him),
- Ironically, Weldo was the one to blast Bookala despite being Kabuki Novice’s battle form in the original Japanese episodes.
