The Bloom of Doom was a multi-eyed flower monster who served as the titular main antagonist of the episode "Bloom Of Doom".

History

Lord Zedd saw that Kimberly had become bitter over the fact that Trini had more members of her club than her and decided to take advantage of this. He had Goldar create a jealousy potion and used a Putty to switch one of her cacti with a potion laced cactus which turned her into bitter rivals with Trini. Seeing Kimberly angrily sitting in a flower patch, he decided to use them against her and created the Bloom of Doom from a bunch of flowers to fight the Power Rangers. The Bloom of Doom encountered the Power Rangers at the city side of Angel Grove Park only to be openly surprised when all six of them arrived to confront her despite Tommy's limited powers. The Bloom of Doom had long vine arms that she could use to entangle her victim in her clutches, and she could also spray incendiary pollen at her victims, which caused a severe burning sensation on their skin. After some Putties that she summoned were defeated, she tried to run into the city from the Park but the Power Rangers cut her off and forced her to fight. Now cornered, the Bloom of Doom sprayed them with her pollen and, although Kimberly and Trini got clear, the boys were completely disabled by the irritating pollen and the girls had to fight alone.

Kimberly then used a specially designed ribbon to restrain the Bloom of Doom and electrocuted her. However, the Bloom was accidentally freed when Trini tried to hit the monster with her Blade Blaster but cut the ribbon instead. Trying to rectify the situation, Trini attempted to stab the monster but she just teleported away from the battle. Due to bad editing, we then almost immediately jump cut to Kimberly trying to use another ribbon on the monster only for her to be ready this time and throw her to the ground with it. The Bloom then used her abilities on Kimberly and teleported her to another dimension, by simply staring in her eyes. The Bloom of Doom gloated about her eminent victory since Kimberly had driven all of her friends away and Kimberly remained steadfast but the Bloom trapped her with her tentacles and sent an electric shock through them which knocked her down. Luckily, Trini freed her friend from the Bloom by throwing her Power Daggers at a 90-degree trajectory course which knocked the monster and Kimberly out of the dimension. Additionally, Kimberly was now freed from the spell because being broken out of the dimension somehow made the effects of Zedd's potion wear off. After reconciling with Trini, they teamed up to pummel the monster with Trini jump kicking the monster back before Kimberly used the Power Bow on the monster by shooting three arrows. When the boys showed up, the Bloom of Doom recovered and decided to use her pollen to finish them all off. However, the Rangers couldn't afford give her a chance to do this so they combined their Power Weapons and finished her with the Power Blaster.

Personality

The Bloom of Doom was malicious, spiteful, wicked and sociopathic and could be considered a psychological abuser as she tormented Kimberly in her dimension. The Bloom is also psychopathic and bipolar since she will randomly go from speaking calmly to screaming at her foes at complete random. However, she is also highly arrogant and over-confident as she underestimated the power of Kimberly's friendship with Trini and the other Rangers as they took her down.

Powers and Abilities

  • Strength: The Bloom of Doom could take down Kimberly down with one swing of her tentacles as well as throw Kim overhead.
  • Durability: The Bloom of Doom remained standing despite being electrocuted by Kimberly's ribbon and even a direct hit from Trini's Power Daggers did no serious harm despite taking her and Kimberly out of her dimension.
  • Teleportation: The Bloom of Doom can teleport to any location at will in an explosion of energy that resembles flowers.
    • Instant Teleportation: The Bloom of Doom was able to do this quickly enough to avoid a stab from Trini's Blade Blaster.
  • Dimensional Teleportation: The Bloom of Doom was able to teleport herself and Kimberly into a Hell like dimension she referred to as "her garden." She did this in a trippy kaleidoscope effect.
  • Incendiary Pollen: The Bloom of Doom could fire orange pollen from her face that hurts enough to knock down all five Rangers.

Arsenal

  • Vine Tentacles: The Bloom of Doom had large tentacle like vines for hands that she can swing around like whips to strike down her enemies.
    • Electric Shock: The Bloom of Doom could send a yellow electrical charge along her whips powerful enough to make Kimberly fall to her knees.

Behind the Scenes

Portrayal

Notes

  • The Bloom of Doom comes from what is commonly referred to as Zyu2 footage, and was not seen in the original Zyuranger.
    • It seems very likely that the original Zyu2 creators originally intended for both Kimberly and Trini to be feuding given how Trini destroys the ribbon for no reason and acts overly aggressive to Kimberly for no reason.
  • For many years, there was rumored to be missing footage of a Zord battle that included Lokar, but recently released footage uploaded by Jeff Pruitt revealed this to be a myth. The cut Zord battle consisted solely of Bloom of Doom facing off against the Megazord and Dragonzord, before being destroyed by the Power Sword.
    • It was most likely cut due to the original Megazord being in most of the shots she was in.
  • Many have theorized that, on Toei's part, the Bloom of Doom's pollen was originally supposed to be a new version of the Pineoctopus' cardboard pollen which would explain why the pollen seemed to be causing severe sneezing and not actual pain as well as why the male Rangers disappear from the battle completely after being hit by it. In fact, the only reason that we know it is incendiary is because Zedd and the Rangers tell the viewers that it burns.
    • If this is true, it was probably changed to incendiary pollen because it would be too derivative of "No Clowning Around."
  • A de-petaled version of Bloom of Doom was later seen in "Fire in Your Tank" as one of the monsters in Divatox's boot camp/monster tryouts. It was nicknamed "Debloom" by fans.
    • This suit was the origin of the Lokar Zord battle myth since fans thought that Lokar created with his Breath of Doom. With the debunking of this myth however, it is commonly believed that they butchered the suit because it was in horrendous quality by the time that Toei shipped it over to America.
      • Another common belief is that the suit was in such a terrible state was because its signature attack involved bobbing up and down which can tear the rubber suit if done enough.
        • The horrible suit quality was also why it didn't return after its episode and was subsequently the only Zyu2 monster not to make at least one return appearance.
  • Back in early 2003, shortly after the series changed hands from Saban Entertainment to Disney, some of the monster costumes, including Bloom of Doom's depetaled appearance, were auctioned off by ABC Auctions. It sold for $214.50.
