Bakuage 15: Lock and Key (錠とキー Jō to Kī) is the fifteenth episode of Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger.

Synopsis[]

Kaseki Grumer, a bitter Kurumaju that does not attack humans, appears! A chance encounter with Kaseki Grumer leads to a friendship between Jyo and the beast... The story of friendship between a righteous hero and a bitter monster begins now!

Plot[]

The Trio discover a digital sign for a museum exhibit on dinosaurs and Yaiyai is impressed that such fearsome creatures existed on the planet Earth. Decotrade says that they should be getting back to work, with the three of them racing inside the museum to find a dinosaur that they can use to make a Kuramaju. They infiltrate the museum by disguising themselves as workers unloading the crates of fossils that will be put on display, stealing the fossil of a Simiasaurus that was to be the main attraction of the exhibit. Ittasha then places her Ignition Key into the bones of the extinct creature.

Outside, Jyo hears the loud scream of the museum curator while walking close to the entrance of the museum loading dock and rushes in to see what is wrong, only to come face to face with the newly formed Kaseki Grumer. Kaseki just stands there menacingly as the Trio order him to attack Jyo but Kaseki steps back and hesitates a bit. The others arrive and they all transform together, but when Taiya tries to start a roll call, Kaseki charges as if to ram the Boonboomgers. The Rangers are taken by surprise when Kaseki jumps over them and runs away scared, much to the chagrin of the Trio who wonder what went wrong. Ittasha thinks that maybe using something so old somehow made their new monster defective.

Jyo checks on the curator to see if she is alright while Mira is amazed how fast the dinosaur Grumer is. The curator says that it is just like an actual Simiasaurus, explaining that the monster was made from a fossil of one and shows a picture of the dinosaur. The dinosaur existed 100 million years ago and had powerful legs used for running, meaning that the Grumer replicated the traits of the living dinosaur from the fossil. Jyo is concerned that the monster might hurt people and that they need to find it right away. Ishiro reassures the curator that once they defeat Kaseki, it will become the fossil again and they will return it to her. Mira says that they are delivery people and that they promise to bring the fossil back safe and sound for today’s delivery. Taiya agrees, saying that today’s mission of a dinosaur hunt has him cranked up.

The team search the city and check in, with no luck finding Kaseki, Taiya radios everyone to keep looking. Bun Bun finds it odd that a Kuramaju would run away instead of starting a fight, but Taiya speculates that the dinosaur its fossil base components are made from was a skittish and shy creature and it copied those traits. Jyo searches further and finds Kaseki in the bushes, trying to approach him carefully so he doesn’t run away but Bun Bun calling scares Kaseki. Kaseki tries to run but he is too weak from hunger to get very far, Jyo shows compassion to the monster and gets him away from frightened civilians.

Hiding in a parking garage, Jyo now has a dilemma as Kaseki does not want to hurt anyone and it would be wrong to attack an innocent living creature, but he and his team have to retrieve the fossil. Genba suddenly appears and wants to help, offering the keys to a warehouse to help Jyo hide Kaseki and instructs him to sneak through the emergency exit to avoid being spotted. Jyo thanks him and takes Kaseki to the warehouse, with Genba amused about the “lonely little dinosaur”.

Jyo returns to the warehouse a few hours later with food for an excited Kaseki who knocks him over and nuzzles him like a pet happily welcoming his master home. Jyo bought meat and plant foods as well as fish to cover whatever diet that Kaseki has naturally, only for the dino to take and eat the cream puff that he had bought for himself. Jyo is upset at first but decides that as long as Kaseki is happy it is fine.

Kaseki continues to eat and Jyo gets a call from Taiya, who has been informed by Genba of the situation. Jyo apologizes but Taiya asks what he is going to do next, Jyo is uncertain if they need to fight as he is sure that Kaseki will not attack anyone. Taiya asks if Jyo can prove that, which Jyo is hesitant to answer but decides to spend the night with Kaseki to prove he isn’t dangerous. Taiya allows him to do so, with Ishiro asking if he’s really okay with Jyo’s plan, with Taiya just silent and wondering himself.

Kaseki is upset because he heard Taiya, but Jyo comforts him and tries to get some dinner, only to see Kaseki has eaten all the food, but the dino nuzzles him again and Jyo just pats his head.

Jyo spends the evening trying to keep watch over Kaseki, but accidentally falls asleep for a bit and panics when he wakes up, only to see the dino playing with a yoga ball like a cat playing with yarn. Jyo is relieved and goes back to sleep, only to wake up having a little trouble breathing hours later and seeing Kaseki sleeping and resting his head on his lap, with him then resting his head against Kaseki.

In the morning, Jyo finds that Kaseki had stayed with him all night and didn’t go out to attack people. He asks Kaseki if he is going to promise not to attack anyone from now on, which the dino agrees to. Jyo decides to name his new pet dinosaur “Keytarou”, then hears the growling of Keytarou’s stomach, laughing and deciding to go out to get breakfast for him. Upon opening the shutters, Jyo comes face to face with the Sanseater Trio and a platoon of Neijiretta, who plan on capturing Keytarou and bring him back into the Hashiryan. Jyo changes into Bun Black and tries to protect Keytarou, only for Decotrade and Ittasha to grab him and drag him out of the warehouse. Jyo frees him and tries to encourage Keytarou to run away on his own, only for Yaiyai to attack him and demand that the Ranger return his dinosaur to him. Jyo grabs Yaiyai and throws him, sending him flying and crashing hard onto the pavement with Decotrade and Ittasha checking on him and once Jyo and Keytarou are surrounded, the Trio throw a net and capture the two. Fortunately, the rest of the Boonboomgers show up and free Jyo and Keytarou while driving off the Nejiretta. Taiya wants to support Jyo, as he has proven that Keytarou is a good monster. The team are going to defend the two until Jyo gets Keytarou to safety, with Ittasha sending out more Nejiretta to try and stop them.

In all the commotion, Cannonborg manages to attack from above to modify Keytarou and infuse him with Ghassolin. Keytarou loses his innocence and free will and becomes a savage monster with a drive to destroy, while Jyo is at first confused by this as Kaseki attacks the Rangers, the Trio blurt out that their commander is probably behind this. Jyo tries to snap Keytarou back to normal but gets pulverized and knocked out of his transformation trying to do so. Jyo is heartbroken and continues calling out to Keytarou, who at first seemed to respond to Jyo but then the modifications to its mind suppressed those thoughts as it writhes in pain.

The Kaseki Grumer suddenly grows on his own without the need for Yaiyai to enter Highway Space and rampages through the city. Cannonborg is disappointed with the results of his little experiment, the side effects of his little “tune up” did not turn out as he expected and he wasted more Ghassolin as a result rather than creating more as Kaseki consumed what he infused into him.

As Kaseki continues to rampage, destroying buildings and trapping and injuring civilians, Jyo is horrified and shocked as the rest of the Boonboomgers rescue civilians. Jyo pleads for Keytarou to stop and screams in frustration when he doesn’t listen, blaming himself for what has happened, saying that he failed to do his duty as a police officer to protect everyone and his choices led to this.

Taking responsibility, he tells Taiya that he will personally take care of the Grumer himself. Jyo transforms and calls Bun Bun into battle, forming Boonboomger Robo Monster and pilots it. Taiya asks if he will be alright, but Jyo says he needs to handle this matter. The Trio cheer on their dinosaur monster, who proves strong enough to match Monster blow for blow. The battle goes on until sunset, with Jyo remembering Keytarou as he was and cries, saying how sorry he is for what he is about to do. Jyo hesitates to activate Monster’s finisher but does so and in his sorrow delivers the final blow. Before he explodes, Keytarou returns to normal, making Jyo’s actions all the more painful to him. The Trio are bummed that they lost again, with Yaiyai taking it especially hard as he cries because he lost his dinosaur. Ittasha comforts him and Decotrade tries to cheer him up by treating them both to dinner.

The next day, Jyo is on duty and returns the missing Simiasaurus bone to the museum. The curator thanks Officer Akuse for completing the delivery and now the children can visit the museum and see the dinosaurs. Jyo heads out and sees the digital sign for the exhibit, with a little boy excited to see the dinosaurs as his father says the exhibit will be open soon and asks what dinosaur he wants to see as the child lists them off. Jyo is melancholy and thinks about Keytarou, but sees his teammates as he walks away silently, with Taiya putting his arm around Jyo’s shoulder to comfort him as the others walk with him with the camera panning to the clouds.
